  1. Thanks all for the insight everyone, I've taken it all on board. Messiah: That sounds logical. Anyway, how's this list looking. I'm really liking the look of the Jaycar IEBC and DFA - the thread I linked earlier seems to show promising results and I'm quite confident with a soldering iron. I think some things I'll definitely get: *-Jaycar IEBC + Controller ~$150 *-Some small boost gauge ~$70 *-Leather Retrim (There's a group buy going on atm) ~$800 *-Window tint ~$200 *-Keep my FMIC and put back the stock airbox + new panel filter ~$50 *-New bushes ~$?? Current total: $1270 + $?? Now the part I'm unsure of: {One of the following | $T < $500}: *-New silicon hoses ~$?? *-High flow cat ~$?? *-Jaycar DFA to lean up AFR's ~$50 + $ Labour of a tuner who can work this thing. --* _OR_ Nistune ~Big$?? I think by the end of it, I'd like to have a nice base R33 that I can really enjoy driving in the mean time and add to (extremely) slowly with student wages. Rather than a constant work in progress like it looks like now.
  2. Hey, I think you missed me! Anyway, could you kindly please change my username to "aeqel" Thanks.
  3. Hey, do you have the vacuum hose that goes from the IC pipe to the solenoid? The one with the restrictor in it, I lost mine. ><
  4. Thanks for the replies all. Fib: Noted, I'll keep that in mind - but this $2k is money to spare on top of emergency money and savings. ^^ FrangaR33: You mean something like this? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/LEATHER-SEAT-COVER-...3-/260577226288 For ~$600 that seems like a steal, would make the car feel a lot more expensive. Where could I get gauges? Jimmy: The only thing off putting me off about getting performance parts is that it seems like it can get very expensive, very quickly with parts and labour and honestly have absolutely no idea where go and what to buy. But I love the sound of it. Lowered Springs doesn't sound too expensive, am I right? should I take my car to a Pedders? Could they diff shim and all that other nonsense too? Consensus is generally cat-back exhaust, what defines a good exhaust? Mild steel seems like the only thing financially viable right now. Also, if I were to get one or the other; what should it be?
  5. Hey guys, I've had my skyline for a while now; though as a student haven't had that much money to spare on it I played around a bit - probably shouldn't have though. I have a FMIC and pod - aesthetically stock, could use some body work.. Now I have ~$2000 to spare and I was wondering where best to start spending it on the car and where (if I should) take my car to get work done on, in Brisbane. I'm honestly completely uninspired and would like advice; and I might add I love my skyline but that doesn't make me a mechanic - I'm a physics student... I don't want to make my Skyline a disgrace and completely rice it up, but I was interested in adding quality details like quality gauges and mounts, lights and maybe black leather interior or performance upgrades like brakes, new lines (I like a well maintained machine), cold air intake and stuff? Where would I buy such things? Also, I saw this: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KC5387 I saw the uber long thread about this, this looks like awesome value. If I were to make this, any idea's where I should take it to get it installed in Brisbane along with all the other things? Any advice or inspiration?
  6. From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_Hurricane The Hurricane was one of the most advanced vehicles for its time. Holden described the Hurricane as a research vehicle, allowing them "to study design trends, propulsion systems and other long range developments". The Hurricane contained a "retro-GPS" system called "Pathfinder" that used magnetic signals built within the road,[2] digital instrument displays, an auto-seek radio function, "Comfortron" automatic temperature control air conditioning and a wide-angle backup camera connected to a closed-circuit television (CCTV) screen in the centre console ---- Sorry, did I just read auto-seek radio function?
  7. Hi there, Could you kindly change my username to "aeqel" cheers.
  8. Hi there, Could you kindly change my username to "aeqel" cheers.
  9. Ditto, getting good speeds too. 1.3-1.4MB/s from Usenet consistently. Drops to around 700-800KB/s during leecher hour. No where near as bad as Exetel, went from ADSL2+ speeds to 100KB/s after hitting Midnight. I've used Internode, I had their ADSL1 8000Kbps before I could get ADSL2+. They were okay, I got them for their Usenet access. They're very expensive tho. In terms of connection no better or worse than TPG to be honest. Their support was great, TPG's support is crap. But seriously, haven't had drop out issues (ISP side) in years, very similar to what TALBO reports.. Your call. It very rarely is the ISP's fault, remember that. I'm talking about general internet use/leeching, apparently in gaming Internode is meant to be better? Like shaving off 10ms in CS or something, I don't know if it's worth it but hey! It's 10ms faster! As for the connection the OP should get, since you want something so specific do check out whirlpool. Here's a direct link: http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc/?action=search BTW: ADSL1's max speed is 8000Kbps, which equates to a theoretical maximum speed of 1MB/s.
  10. First of all, good choice on moving to a laptop if you're not doing high end gaming! Get something that's indeed a laptop and not a desktop crammed into a laptop case tho please. You won't save too much money, and you'll have a lot more effort on your hands if you make one from OEM parts. Don't do that. I've sold, repaired and serviced heaps of laptops at my old job at a computer store. My honest unbiased pointers: Cooling! If you have a laptop with crappy cooling, you will be spewing with anger non stop. Stay away from HP/Compaq and even Acer, they're the worst for this. And stay away from ultra fancy looking cases that look super sleek/curvy etc.. Even Toshiba have a few of these. With that said, even the most classic of looking laptops have poor cooling. So really you need an eye for this. Reliability! This is a hard one, but Toshiba have been pretty solid over the years. Asus I've noticed very weird/unique little problems on each one. I have used and sold a lot of MSI laptops, and all of them have been amazing performers without any flaw, honestly they're just amazing no bloat on their casings either like other manufacturers, I really like them. Dells aren't too bad either man, but I prefer the tactile feel of MSI a lot more. Oh and IBM (Lenovo) are definitely good contenders. Performance! Don't buy a Celeron, please. Also since you're doing some gaming you'd probably want an Nvidia or ATi videocard not an Intel one.. well it all really depends on what games you're playing and how avidly. To be honest man, it depends how much thought and effort you want to put into researching it.. there are so many out there for sale now a days.. If you're lazy - don't want to think about it much now or in the future, buy that Dell linked above by LordMidol, get the best warranty you can buy and you'll be happy enough. (Spec wise it's pretty damn good) Otherwise I know quite a few good stores in Brisbane I can list.
  11. The better we understand ultimately how proteins fold the closer we get to actually understanding why (specifically genetic) diseases like Huntingtons, Alzheimers, and even some Cancers are what they are, and how they "work" in killing us. Knowing this we get so much closer to actually developing a cure for these diseases. That is important, and if anyone doesn't think so, I can't help but label them an insensitive bastard. It does use up CPU cycles, which ultimately means using up more power and therefore money. However, many people have their computers on 24/7, the amount of extra power your CPU pulls at 100% usage compared to idle is negligible now a days. Screens use a lot of power in a desktop system (newer ones are getting much better.) modern CPU's not so much any more, so I won't lie and say your statement is incorrect because indeed it is. Also, I won't lie and say it isn't stressful to your computer hardware, if you're running stock speeds it shouldn't be too bad (again negligible) but if you're overclocking expect significantly decreased hardware life, more so than what you already would expect after pushing your hardware past its limits. I change my computer hardware fairly infrequently compared to normal consumers, I normally buy the best money can get and change it after about 5 years without bothering about upgrades in the way and never have had a problem (in the past when I was folding AND overclocking as well using hardware that was a lot less reliable). But it is definitely another thing that should be known. It really is up to you in the end if you want to do it or not, but it is definitely not a "complete waste" of CPU Cycles, it's not in anyway even a waste of CPU Cycles. Still, the final decision is up to you - it's probably one of the cheapest charitable things to help humanity you can do! And it sure would be great to say SAU enjoys supporting Genetic Disease research. If you guys have any other questions about the Science, I'll be happy to shed as much light as I can on it. And just for the record, as for Seti@Home - it's a lot more broad in its research, some are plain silly (in my opinion) like calculating the largest prime number, but with that said there usually is a good point for research. Even tho I don't know what might be the point of knowing what the largest prime number is considering our number system goes up to infinity... Like running to find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow... BUT you can select what you want to process, so it's not all silly. What I like about Folding@Home is that it is directly helping real people, our brothers and sisters per say.. P.S. Don't forget to input "122553" without quotes as your team number to fold for the SAU Team!
  12. I've been slowing down recently but it seems like no one else but R31Nismoid and I are actually folding.. Come on guys, it's a great cause! You all made it too easy for me to break the top 5 =P
  13. Hey!! Gonna take a study break, what's happening 8:30pm is our booked server for normal maps? and before that at around 7pm we play gungame servers elsewhere following each other with friends?
  14. Hey hey! Count me in again whatever the game may be, casual gaming is the only thing that keeps my sanity.
  15. Oh you guys kept playing after it shut down? I ran off to play DotA. =/ Good fun, quite enjoyable even tho I was getting owned.
  16. YOU BE TROOOLLLLINNNN'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. And in related also from Nissan.
  18. Cool, count me in for this one tonight. I haven't played CS:S in years! I used to be play DoD (non source) back in the day, had some truly epic battles was great.. looking forward to playing a few half life mods.. just for fun, who else better to muck around with as a break. Thursday nights are pretty damn good for me too, it's the only day I have a short day at uni.. everything else is either ending in the afternoon or starting really early... or both. I better fix my wireless before starting and whip out the ol' headset and mousepad for a little a virtual violence.
  19. I personally own a Mio (NavMan essentially but pretty) but I found Garmin worked the best for here in Brisbane.
  20. Using the exact same hardware on my laptop I found those gains. Even if you don't find increases there, there are no reasons not to be running 64-bit if you can now. =)
  21. omgwtfbbq 5k!! oh well.. back on topic.. The Beyerdynamic: DTX800 might be what you're looking for: http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=12 Be careful with bass, it's very easy to get too much. This is where I find open headphones nice, the DTX800's are kind of half/half so you get the best of both worlds. You can easily get something more expensive if you want, but usually you won't have either the soundcard or source to make full use of it. I can recommend http://headphones.com.au they have free delivery Australia wide and are very reliable.
  22. Can I please be changed to "qeel3120" thanks a lot for all the great work.
  23. Looks good R31Nismoid, except for one critical thing.. "Vista Home P 32bit - $165" Use 64-bit. It's more than just the RAM.. much more. Rendering speeds are increased - this is really important in a HTPC, USB speeds are ludicrously fast compared to 32-bit - I've managed to get the full 60MB/s off USB 2.0 in Windows 7 x64, I normally get around 30MB/s on Vista x64 and about 5MB/s on Vista x86 (32-bit). Go for, 64-bit.. won't regret it. I know Windows XP x64 was terrible, however since Vista x64 all of the compatibility issues have been solved imho. Sure you need x64 drivers, but 64-bit drivers are abundant now with new hardware and commonly used hardware. Windows XP x64 was a mock up by Microsoft, Vista x64 was an operating system designed to be 64-bit. As for the PC building, sounds like fun I wouldn't mind doing that too and helping out some SAU members in Brisbane here. I used to have a computer business, but now I'm studying at U.Q and wouldn't mind a little extra pocket money.
