hey guys.

my car (r33 gtst) isn't runing so good.

i swaped my stock AFM with a mates R33 (green lable, that works fine in his car) AFM, and it makes my car run like garbage, the car doesnt idle right, won't even go past 3k rpm in seccond gear. not good to drive at all

i cleaned my dirty AFM with eletrical contact cleaner, and now my car runs just like it did with my friends AFM.

whats the go?? i have 2 ecu's and they both dont like my friends AFM or my now cleaned AFM.

How did your's run before you took out your afm to clean it?

It may not be the afm you know, you could have a significant vacuum/boost leak in your intake piping which will give similar symptoms. Seeing as 2 ecus's dont like it and you've tried 2 afms i'd say you've eliminated both ecu and afm problems.

yea theres severe leaks, before and after the engine, its not good at all... as i said car running bad.

bad = 3/10.... that was with a dirty stock afm, any ecu (both arnt stock, but close enough to it)

with my friends AFM or my now cleaned one, its running really bad 1/10.

i just don't know why the good AFM's don't like my car??

The old

2 bads = running bad

compred to

1 bad + 1 good = running really bad

Happens all the time, the answer is to fix the remaining bad.

In your case the leaks are making the engine run rich. Less air is actualy going into the engine, so the ECU is supplying too much fuel.

This is partially offset by the dirty AFM which sends lower voltage signals to the ECU. Hence the ECU injects less fuel than it would if the airflow was accurate.

When you put a good (clean) AFM on, the ECU sees the correct (higher) airlfow and injects more fuel. The result is even richer running than when you had a bad (dirty) AFM.

The answer.....simple ...... fix the leaks.

hehe yea i know... fixing leaks cost money :P, and i also need someone to do it, which would require me to drive my car for at least an hour to a decent mechanic, and im not sure if thats good for the health of my car.... as it just pours black smoke out of the back.

"car fussy with AFM" doesn't equal lazy.

however being currently unemployed is. reason to why i don't have money, also reason why its taken so long for me to get car fixed.

i wish it were a simple pipe leak. but i beleive its a intake manifold gasket..

question was purely about the AFM and it was answerd. i have no intension to come out as a smartarse, you have been on SAU longer and you are also older, so i must respect that. sorry jono

ok, well, I'd check those manifold gasket leaks that you are talking about, and then maybe look at a stuffed FPR or maybe one of your injectors is stuck, or leaking.

So the car is blowing black smoke on idle? It will if it is fuelling too much.

the car pours out the smoke on idle, its black.

the only reason i say manifold gasket, is because i can hear a high pitched air leak sound right at the front of the plennum, i dunno if thats normal, but i couldnt hear it on my friends car.

im gonna send the car to mechanic sometime soon, ive had enough playing around with it.

hopefully it wont cost too much to have the gaskets replaced.

but im sure the dude will have a look aroudn and see what needs to be done.

    • As I wait for parts to be delivered, I have managed to procure via a contact a R32 Nistune ECU......for now I just want to monitor what the car is doing but eventually.......who knows where we go 😂
    • To back this up, I'm always looking on the outside, seeing the level, and then opening it up anyway, as I'm worried the level I've looked at, is more so a scunge line. Then you end up dipping your damn finger in it too depending on the type of tank you're looking at just to make sure I'm not going insane.   PS, Mark, polish up the none moroso one a bit and then give it a clear coat. The Moroso one looks to be way shiner (not mirror polished, just shinier) and it'll still look weird with the two different alloys beside each other. Either that, or Id probably paint them a flat black...

    • Yes, overthinking. Many PS reserviors are completely opaque. Our Skyline ones, for example. Have to remove lid, peak inside, swirl the dipstick, try to remember how to read it, etc etc. Normal. Radiator overflows are often sufficiently opaque and scunged up that you can't see the true level inside anyway, and have to open and have a peak. Besides which, I replaced the (massively expensive, even back then) plastic overflow in my Alfa GTV, back in the '90s with a stainless one that I had a good fabricator make up to be dimensionally same-same, that looks remarkably similar to the Bogan's Moroso one above, and I never suffered any particular paranoia that I didn't know how much coolant was in it.
