hey man i don drive like a dickhead i keep telling them i only speed when it's safe to do so  LOL.

i stick to the speed limit 95% of the time

the other 5% is accidental speeding and its ony like 5k/h

and if i see im speeding i back off

its not safe to speed!

Don't get a shitter just because everyone tells you that a Skyline is too dangerous. You won't respect the shitter...That’s a fact.

But even worse is when you do get into your skyline you will have driven the shitter for 1-2yrs and will have no respect for the power a skyline will have because all you have done is thrash your shitter.

IMO this breeds an even more dangerous situation. People will tell you (and you will believe) that because you drove a piece of shit before getting your Skyline you will be responsible. How can you respect something that you haven't driven/had any contact with, you will become complacent.

firstly if your 19 do what you want :P but i realise that isnt always the best or easiest option, and if your loving at home theres no reason to piss off your parents, so just save your money, but a bomb for a while, and once your off your Ps or your parents think they an trust you then you still have most of your money + what you wouldve saved in that time to buy the car you want !

R31 is the car for you

1. 3 litre strong torquey motor (so still a lot of fun to drive)

2. cheap to insurance (trust me you will flip when you see insurance for an import at 19)

3. Reiable not many maintain costs

4. Part readily available

5. and if your got the turbo bug you can drop a turbo in easy as later on

so do yourself a favor and get some expirence in a car like this you'll not regret it, Have a look on the r31 forum the boys have alot of fun.

i drive an 86 pintara gxe, ca20de.

these cars are the same car as an R31 skyline with a smaller engine and a few different interior and exterior details.

as far as I know they would handle quite similarly.

they are very dangerous cars in the wet (a slow clutch release at 2000rpm started a burnout in my car and my mum just said "now you know how easy it is to do in this car")

get a shitty little FWD IMO or even a rwd that u can chuck around on some private property. IMO the best way to learn to control an out of control car is to get it out of control in controlled conditions (driver courses are great for this).

if you buy a piece of shit to save cash, it has to have NO AIRCON, NO POWERSTEERING, mayb not over 1.8litre coz it might have enuff power to make you push it. no power windows etc....

why you ask... coz in the end its gonna cost you more then buying a good car with these options coz on the shit car it will break down. my cars shit and its got all power options etc etc. ive replaced half of everything on the car. and the other half is waiting to be fixed or replace.... so ive quit the whole car and am in the market of another car. if i had all the cash i used to buy the car and fix the car up to its state now... i could be driving a gtr... which makes me sick.... but in the end its only set me back a year or 2 of owning something like a gtr. but i want to wait another year and get my dream car.... supra... ahhhh...

but any rear wheel drive car will be like that, it depends on the attitude that you have towards driving, as i have been reading this topic, i suggest you stick with a non turbo, but get something that still looks nice like a bmw, or somethin that has a bit of power but not too much.

i have lost a few mates in car accidents, and i have learnt from it that it simply isnt worth speeding anytime, there is no such thing as safe speeding, even if there is no one on the rd it takes a split second for something to jump out in front of you, or even something like your tyre to blow out.

by the attitude that you have, i think your parents are right just get a non turbo and do some exterior mods, casue if they have seen you speeding and you sayin u can safe speed, then most likely you will speed and then you will be bitching about losing your license or you wrote it off.

stocko SR20 pulsar. preferably in beige. enough power to not be totally annoying but safe FWD handling to not get you into too much trouble. some have ABS and an airbag too.

that said the biggest accident i've had was in a 1.6L laser at about 50km/h - got driven into (was not at fault, insurance sent me cheque, woohoo!!!) and in about 0.5 sec i was sitting in a wreck with the dash wedged against the gear lever and a lump on the head.

it all comes down to attitude, being alert, aware of the potential consequences of the decisions you're making and basically being paranoid that everyone else on the road is a complete moron who is out to kill you.

Have had a 300+kw at the wheels GTR since I was 19 (and no it wasnt mummy and daddy paying for it, i caught the bus until I was 19 saving money for one) and havnt pranged it yet. Id like to put it down to common sense, since it would be very easy to crash it squeezing the throttle just a bit too much around a corner. Parents were dead against it when I was looking at them, but it was my money and my decision, not theirs.

Am now 22, insurance loves me (because I have had it for over 2 1/2 years without a claim), only one speeding fine in it (90km/h in an 80 zone) and lam loving it.

If you have self control, get the Skyline. If you dont and are likely to show its fully sikness to your mate-ahs then dont get one because you will crash it.

I had the same dilemma with my parents. Especially my dad. They freaked after seeing my brother put twin turbos on his EA falcon and then having to spend thousands to maintain and fix everything that broke. I guess with the limited knowledge they have of turbo cars they just assumed all turbos were bad news. Only thing is they knew i would buy a turbo and there was nothing they could do about it. So i bought my R32 GTS-t and now dad loves it.

My first car was a n13 pulsar hatch, I drove it for 5 years. And installed a massive stereo and used it for db drag events.

My advice is get something cheap, corolla gti etc, suzuki, and chuck some big rims and a stereo in it.. then enjoy driving it. Save up your cash for when your off your P's then go buy your dream car. Insurance will be cheaper (providing you are a sensible driver) and you wont have cops hassle you as much. And your parents will have peace of mind because you wont be wrapped around some traffic light pole.

i mean with so many racer/dragger wanna bees around in their commodores and s13's  and shit you'd really wanna shut a few of them up.

The fact that you care about what "wanna bees" think about you, and feel the need to engage in stoplight drags with them, proves that you don't have the right attitude to drive a high powered car.

I realise that you're 19, and I do remember what it was like, but its not worth it. Showing off to losers and beating them doesn't make you any less of one. All it does is make you the king of the losers.

Make your nick more than just empty talk. The next time some tool lines you up and gives you the eye before smoking it at an intersection, just say "WAT EVA" and let them go.

You must have driven some absolute shitters, then.

My first car (a Volvo 240GL), and my old man's last two BMWs were only dangerous if I went out of my way to drive like a tool by pitching it into a corner way too fast, or when I was driving the tyres below their tread depth indicators, or just flooring the throttle around corners.

But if you're the kind of driver that does that in the wet, it doesn't matter what kind of drivetrain you've got....and its probably not the car at fault. Either your setup or maintenance is shit, or your driver is.

    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.

    • Well, apparently they do fit, however this wont be a problem if not because the car will be stationary while i do the suspension work. I was just going to use the 16's to roll the old girl around if I needed to. I just need to get the E90 back on the road first. Yes! I'm a believer! 🙌 So, I contacted them because the site kinda sucks and I was really confused about what I'd need. They put together a package for me and because I was spraying all the seat surfaces and not doing spot fixes I decided not to send them a headrest to colour match, I just used their colour on file (and it was spot on).  I got some heavy duty cleaner, 1L of colour, a small bottle of dye hardener and a small bottle of the dye top coat. I also got a spray gun as I needed a larger nozzle than the gun I had and it was only $40 extra. From memory the total was ~$450 ish. Its not cheap but the result is awesome. They did add repair bits and pieces to the quote originally and the cost came down significantly when I said I didn't need any repair products. I did it over a weekend. The only issues I had were my own; I forgot to mix the hardener into the dye two coats but I had enough dye for 2 more coats with the hardener. I also just used up all the dye because why not and i rushed the last coat which gave me some runs. Thankfully the runs are under the headrests. The gun pattern wasn't great, very round and would have been better if it was a line. It made it a little tricky to get consistent coverage and I think having done the extra coats probably helped conceal any coverage issues. I contacted them again a few months later so I could get our X5 done (who the f**k thought white leather was a good idea for a family car?!) and they said they had some training to do in Sydney and I could get a reduced rate on the leather fix in the X5 if I let them demo their product on our car. So I agreed. When I took Bec in the E39 to pick it up, I showed them the job I'd done in my car and they were all (students included) really impressed. Note that they said the runs I created could be fixed easily at the time with a brush or an air compressor gun. So, now with the two cars done I can absolutely recommend Colourlock.  I'll take pics of both interiors and create a new thread.
    • Power is fed to the ECU when the ignition switch is switched to IGN, at terminal 58. That same wire also connects to the ECCS relay to provide both the coil power and the contact side. When the ECU sees power at 58 it switches 16 to earth, which pulls the ECCS relay on, which feeds main power into the ECU and also to a bunch of other things. None of this is directly involved in the fuel pump - it just has to happen first. The ECU will pull terminal 18 to earth when it wants the fuel pump to run. This allows the fuel pump relay to pull in, which switches power on into the rest of the fuel pump control equipment. The fuel pump control regulator is controlled from terminal 104 on the ECU and is switched high or low depending on whether the ECU thinks the pump needs to run high or low. (I don't know which way around that is, and it really doesn't matter right now). The fuel pump control reg is really just a resistor that controls how the power through the pump goes to earth. Either straight to earth, or via the resistor. This part doesn't matter much to us today. The power to the fuel pump relay comes from one of the switched wires from the IGN switch and fusebox that is not shown off to the left of this page. That power runs the fuel pump relay coil and a number of other engine peripherals. Those peripherals don't really matter. All that matters is that there should be power available at the relay when the key is in the right position. At least - I think it's switched. If it's not switched, then power will be there all the time. Either way, if you don't have power there when you need it (ie, key on) then it won't work. The input-output switching side of the relay gains its power from a line similar (but not the same as) the one that feeds the ECU. SO I presume that is switched. Again, if there is not power there when you need it, then you have to look upstream. And... the upshot of all that? There is no "ground" at the fuel pump relay. Where you say: and say that pin 1 Black/Pink is ground, that is not true. The ECU trigger is AF73, is black/pink, and is the "ground". When the ECU says it is. The Blue/White wire is the "constant" 12V to power the relay's coil. And when I say "constant", I mean it may well only be on when the key is on. As I said above. So, when the ECU says not to be running the pump (which is any time after about 3s of switching on, with no crank signal or engine speed yet), then you should see 12V at both 1 and 2. Because the 12V will be all the way up to the ECU terminal 18, waiting to be switched to ground. When the ECU switches the fuel pump on, then AF73 should go to ~0V, having been switched to ground and the voltage drop now occurring over the relay coil. 3 & 5 are easy. 5 is the other "constant" 12V, that may or may not be constant but will very much want to be there when the key is on. Same as above. 3 goes to the pump. There should never be 12V visible at 3 unless the relay is pulled in. As to where the immobiliser might have been spliced into all this.... It will either have to be on wire AF70 or AF71, whichever is most accessible near the alarm. Given that all those wires run from the engine bay fusebox or the ECU, via the driver's area to the rear of the car, it could really be either. AF70 will be the same colour from the appropriate fuse all the way to the pump. If it has been cut and is dangling, you should be able to see that  in that area somewhere. Same with AF71.   You really should be able to force the pump to run. Just jump 12V onto AF72 and it should go. That will prove that the pump itself is willing to go along with you when you sort out the upstream. You really should be able to force the fuel pump relay on. Just short AF73 to earth when the key is on. If the pump runs, then the relay is fine, and all the power up to both inputs on the relay is fine. If it doesn't run (and given that you checked the relay itself actually works) then one or both of AF70 and AF71 are not bringing power to the game.
