yo,

Does anybody know a place that i can get a clutch for cheap for my R32 GTR. It started slipping yesterday after i dumped it at 5000 rpm :) I thought they could handle a bit of that.

I think a wreckers or something might be the way to go, but i dont know any that have plenty of GTR's and other such imports. I also have some gear ready to go in it like new comp n boost kit and dump pipes so it will prob have a bit more power when i get it back and i dont just want to be replacing clutches all the time but i still want to dump it at 5000. So maybe a heavier duty clutch might be the way to go?

Anywayz i have never had to buy a clutch before and i have been looking around and they seem to be between 700 and 900 for a decent one (i dont know if that is a good price or not, its from unique auto sports).

So does anyone have any advice on where a good place to get a clutch is?

Thanks, ElBoRo

dont buy an "off the shelf" clutch, get Jim Berry Race Clutch to build you one...Between $900-$1200 depending if its push or pull. We run a $1000 one in our race car and its lasted two years of extreme punishment (8250rpm dumps with race tyres on).

Just do a search on here on Jim Berry to see all the happy customers

Yeh that sounds like it would be a great clutch but its more than i want to spend, I will think about it though considering i will be giving my clutch some punishment. thanks for your reply anywayz though.

so you will end up buying 2+ $700 clutches + 2+ x installation...or save another $300 to do a proper job once...ahh well its your time and money...not mine

Totally agree

you get a shit clutch, you'll be making a thread about this again in 12 months.

Do it once the first time, save money forever after that

People on the forum arent stupid, and sometimes you have to spend initially to save in the very loooong run.

Fork out the extra $200 or so for a Jimmy B clutch

Jim's Stage 1 clutches are only about $700 anyway. Doubt you'll find any decent clutch for substantially less. The other major factor will be labor for RnR'ing the clutch/box and is going to be the same regardless of clutch brand.

The only slight inconvenience with Jim's clutch is you have to wait for it to be rebuilt. As long as your mechanic doesn't mind having your car in their workshop for a few days its not really an issue. Remember to have the flywheel machined too.

Dirtgarage - What sort of power is the $1000 clutch good for??

Ive got roughly 260rwkw in an r32 gtr - with a rubbish clutch

we have 440AWKW and clutch is great...its the best value for money performance part i have EVER purchased for any of my cars. I dont think i could speak more highly of Jim and his work...i would never run a poorly set-up over priced Jap item ever again.

mechanic rekons stock clutch with heavier duty pressure plate is the way to go.

my dad has this on his skyline, never any problems.

sounds like the way to go to me.

ElBoRo

dont modify it then... or you'll eat another clutch in no-time

you start a thread, everyone says Jim. B... and you go with what the mechanic reckons.

Lemme guess your mechanic doesnt work on skylines for a living? :D

you guessed right....as i said before...its his money and time to waste...not ours.

of course the mechanic wants the cheapie in there....cause he will have work in 6months replacing that one too. Your mechanic is not as stupid as it first seems.

Im just jumping into this thread because i too need a new clutch soon. My car "should" pull over a 300kwATW mark in the next couple of months when i get around to putting the rest of the parts in and tuning it. But first i need a clutch. I was told go somthing like exedy or somthing, but not a shitty no named one. Ihavent herd of jim berry. Ruffly how long am i looking at waiting for the clutch to be built? Im guessing i have to pull mine out and send it away. Sorry for jumping into this thread, haha but im looking for the same thing, and the clutch sounds awesome.

Cheers

Jim Berry clutches include an uprated pressure plate. :P

jwah: If you search under my username you'll find a thread called "Clutch Thoughts" or similar. Off the top of my head, Nathan from Grey Imports had the clutch out on Monday. I express posted it to Jim, who couriered it back on Thursday. It would have arrived at Grey Imports on Friday but for an addressing problem. So, it took Jim two-to-three working days to completely grind off the old clutch material, add new material, uprate the pressure plate, clean everything up, balance, pack and send.

Best bit is the feel. Its almost exactly like stock -- perhaps ever so slightly heavier -- but it bites so much harder.

Edit: spleling and garmmar

He was very busy, and asked me to try and speed things along, but was very cool when the clutch didn't get back as fast as he wanted. Because his premise aren't huge, when he has a busy period I imagine it becomes a bit of a headache for him having undrivable cars around.

Best thing to do is ring and ask him -- 95195150. Nath's a great bloke so I am sure he will try and help. I know he has quite a lot of cars in his shop this week (I was in their yesterday), but I imagine the two of you can probably work out a quiet time for it to be done :D

That is what I really love about Jim's clutches, they can handle a beating yet feel and drive like a stock clutch.

    • Stock ECU (or more accurately stock tune) absolutely refuses to go over 10psi and behaves like you have seen. The Nistune is the same if it is the stock tune. If the Nistune chip has been tuned, the resulting tune could be literally anything for any combination of parts. The Nistune just makes the stock ECU Tunable.
    • So stock ECU does not like anything above 10 psi?  That Nistune one is just for "try" if it will be any different, I know it need to be tune for that. I know but YOU may know about these problem but i/we dont. They few little Skylines here let alone people who know anything about tham so that is why iam asking here
    • So now we have a radiator with no attachments whatsoever. It lifts up with a particularly tight spot between the drivers side air box mount and the lower radiator outlet, but if you've got this far you will sort that too. This is the lower mounts with the rad out so you can see where the rubber bushes go, it is a straight shot upwards Done! Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, with blood less likely to be shed.
    • Right, onto the second last trick. The Air Con condenser is mounted to the front of the radiator and stays in the car when the radiator is removed. There are 2x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the condenser to the radiator, remove those The bottom of the condenser is attached to the radiator with clips. You need to lift the condenser out of those clips and clear (up, then forward). f**ked if  could work out how to do that last bit with the front bumper on. I hope you can, and you share the trick.  Bumper removal probably deserves its own thread one day once I've recovered the will to live, but basically you need to remove the wheels, front inner guard liners (clips and 10mm headed bolts), the self tapper between the guard and the bumper at the rearmost point of the bumper (same as an R32 that bit), any remaining clips at the top/front of the grill, an absolute bastard design with a plate that holds the top of the bumper above the headlight each side (only 1 bolt which is tricky to get to, but the plate catches 2 places on the bumper and must be removed....carefully!) and push clips between the bumper and guard under the headlight. If you've done all that you will be faced with wiring for the fog lights on both sides and in ADM Q50 RS at least, 4 nasty tight plugs on the driver's side for the ADAS stuff. So, the clips at the bottom look like this on drivers side (looking from the front) And on the passenger side (also from the front), you can see this one is already out Clearance on both of these are super tight; the condenser needs to move up but the upper rad support mount prevents that, and the radiator can't move down far because it is (rubber) mounted. Once you achieve the impossible and drop the condenser off those mounts so it does not stop the rad moving, you are good to go
    • OK, next the shroud needs to come off and there are a couple of tricks. Firstly, there is a loom from near the passenger side headlight to the fans, coolant temp sensor etc and there is no plug to undo.  In my case I was OK to leave the shroud on top of the engine so I just undid the passenger side fan plug and about 10 of the clips which gave enough free wire to put it aside. The fan plugs were super tight, the trick I used was a small falt screwdriver to push down on the release tab, then a larger flat screwdriver to lever the plug out of the fan unit....be careful with how much force you apply! If you need to remove the shroud altogether for some reason you will have to deal with all the plugs (tight) and clips (brittle)....good luck. I removed all of the clips and replaced them with cable ties that I will just cut next time. Also, in the Red Sport / 400R at least, the intake heat exchanger reservoir hose is bolted to the shroud in 2 places with 10mm headed bolts; so remove them (the hose stays in the car; no need to undo it at the t fittings down at the radiator lower mount. Once you've dealt with the HX hose and the wiring loom, there are 3x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the shroud to the radiator; remove those.   The shroud then lifts out of the bottom mounts where it sits on the radiator, up and onto the engine out of the way.
