I've done a search, through 40 odd pages, and i can't quite find what i'm looking for, but i may be mistaken so plz don't think i'm lazy.

I have a friend who is offering me his 1 month old 19"rims for $1100 but my question is reguarding road laws.

As far as i know you can increase the size by 25mm? is that correct?

This also means if you get lower profile tyres you can get bigger rims??

I would just like to know if i can get that thinner of a tyre to make them legal to use on the road.

Last thing i need is another reason for them to canary me again.

Any feedback is appricated :P

ok the actual law in victoria you cannot increase the overall rolling diameter of the tyre greater than 15mm. and 25mm wider. Now saying this, most people have illegal rims and tyres on their cars, its not something that is really enforced much but can be used to void insurance if they want to get picky on things.

It is 25mm past the largest stock rim for your model.

ie an executive commodore can have 19's because the SS has 18s.

so with an r33, the largest wheel you could legally have would be 18's (?)

But as mentioned, not too many care

lol still confused...

stock for gtst's are 16, well mine are anyway.

so that means, if its 2 sizes i can go 18, but if its 25mm thats only 1 inch. i'm gonna look at the vicroads website and see if i can find anything there

Yeah if +2" then r33s u can go 19" r34s u can go 20"s...If thats the case. But owning an R33, id say having bigger rims is he least of your problems. If they dont pick on that they will find something else to d!ck u with!

$1100 for 19"s if u like them, what are u waiting for? :P

i think u're getting confused with the terms used....

and another thing to remember is what is legally allowed, may not necessarily be the same as what ur insurer will allow (which really sux sometimes!)

according to vicroads (i've spoken directly to them in the past):

- the rim WIDTH can be increased 25mm or 1 inch.

- the rim DIAMETER can be increased 2 inches from what is noted on the little sticker on ur car which indicates what wheel and tyre size the vehicle was issued with.

as most will tell u tho, sometimes the vicroads regulations are a little ambiguous and depends on who is reading it and interprets the regs. if u're really worried, i would suggest talking to ur insurer first - as their limitations are ususally stricter than vicroads anyway!

Adding to what SWC945 said, with insurance issues. U also have to be careful with insurance companies, they take your money no matter what!

Im with Just Cars, and i know that theres a few things that VIc Roads and EPA wont allow on the car, yet Just Cars still insures me and knows about them (EG: Power FC).

So what happens to me if something happens? I probably wont get payed out, but to me thats not fair because Just Cars should have told me im NOT allowed to have the Power FC and so on if the items illegal.

I shall be upgrading my rims soon also (x10" and x11"), will let u know with what Just Cars says :D

yeh but kelly they only cover "legal modifications", same with Shannons.

It says it in their product disclosure (shannons) and I'm probably the only person who's ever read it :D Anyway I think its left to the consumer to find out what legal and whats not on their own car. I guess it would be pretty hard as a call centre pleb to know whats legal and whats not anyway.

Most people just take their chances I guess (or find out too late).. or if you're smart you hide the mods as best u can. Biggest problem would be if you ran down a pedestrian fatally (or similiar) and the cops turned up to the scene and went over your unRW car.

Anyhoo thats a whole other thread.

i'm also with just cars so i'm looking forward to hearing your report :(

R32 are 16's

R33 are 17x9 +30

R34 are 18x9 +32 i think

I thought that R32 GTR had 17' wheels.... but some poking around has proven me wrong (just wider).

As part of compliance, I had to have some 'tyre placard' on my car (under the bonnet, or passenger side door or something).

It *does* list 17' wheels on it. I guess more of you would have access, but I can post a copy of it up if you want.

    • Nah, they'll do it without a receipt, tell em roughly when it was, that it was cash, youll likely only get store credit, but that gets you some dollars towards the newer better shovel, or other item you need/want later.   Still take it back and have a crack at returning it.
    • Nah. Was just wondering if you were having a small stroke or if there was some slur/gaf/inside joke that I wasn't aware of.
    • That was a fark up, it's Salamanca Place I was thinking of. And now I'm curious as to what potential slur/gaf I have caused with Salamander Road, ha ha!
    • Actually everyone on the roads was really well behaved. The only person that did any minor tailgating was a local hoon in a Turbo Focus. Unfortunately we weren't going the same way so there was no grand initial D touge battle. Lots of people pulled over and let me through. The amount of "Hey man nice car, omg skyline, nice 34 man woo" was suprising. Like really suprising. Like almost annoying. My partner was obviously surprised, she'd never seen anyone in the real world point out the car/like the car/want to chat about the car before, so to have like 3 people per day mention it was notable, I could finally say SEE? SOMEONE THINKS THEY'RE COOL. Everyone was also pretty suprised about the weather. Every day was dry and about ~13-14C. Mount Wellington had a sign that said they close the gates at 9pm and I was heading up there at about ~7:30. It was VERY apparent that conditions were getting significantly worse by the minute on the way up and down. The road on the mountain was terrible though, it's no driving road. I have various suspension related questions now. Luckily it was only about 20 minutes from where we were staying to the top of the mountain as said Google maps. We only had the 2 nights in Hobart. We went to the Farm Gate Market though which was really good - And went down to the Hastings Thermal springs/caves down there during the day. I'd definitely be up for going back again, so luckily there's a few more sights yet to see. Didn't get to do the west coast/queenstown/cradle mountain so this was supposed to be a 'scouting' trip anyway of sorts if I were to one day do/take part in/organize a more car-focused trip. As for the boat, it wasn't bad. Well it was bad, but not in the way you're thinking. We did the night trip which leaves at 6:45 (though you have to be there ~2 hours earlier) and arrives the next morning at about 6am. There is nothing to do on the ship. If you plan accordingly and bring a book/tablet/show to watch/charger you can just chill out, take some Travacalm and just sleep through it. The food there is an extremely basic buffet that costs $32 a plate, or $14 for a $3 pizza. The way back we had a travel kettle and a few different types of cup noodles and made our own tea/coffee in the room. This was a far superior way to do it. At the very least book one of the rooms with beds. I guess as we were in the off season we didn't have room mates. You get an option for rooms with 4 beds (2x bunks) or a room with just the two bottom beds. There's also some option for a deluxe queen bed but it's much pricer. We've been on sleeper trains in Asia before so we figured this is similar (and it was)
