just had my car tuned made 265rwkw on 17psi. On the dyno using the lap top software the car registered no pinging (30-40 on full load). Now we took it for a drive on the road and its making 140 knock on the hand controller.. im puzzled!

The tuner and my mechanic listened carefully but heard no pinging. but at 140 knock on the hand controller would definately be heard when driving or near the motor. So my question is is my knock senser dodgy? or is it too sensitive and just picking up engine noise etc?

Has this happened to anyone before?

the first step would be to isolate what load point its coming from, clear the max knock value, plod arond and see if it spikes up again. if it does then its in the low load area (unlikely). clear the max again and do some medium cruising and check the max knock (likely to be the cause). then try some heavy driving and see if knocks consistently. if you are able to reproduce it try IGN/INJ retard a few degrees of timing and see if that helps it, if so its just a few load points where the timing is too high. if you can make the knock go away by taking out a few deg then get a friend to drive and punch it, watch map tracer and wait for engine flash to come on and pick what cell is doing it, then goto IGN and back out a few degree's for that cell. you should narrow it down within about 5 minutes of doing this.

dyno tuning is fine but road driving does change the load a little, for example going up a slight hill in 3rd will have different load variances to a fixed dyno if that makes sense. nothing to be worried about just a few points need to be smoothened out on the road.

nice power you made, thats on the gt-rs yeah ? good stuff :)

Paul/R31 it does not knock all the time. most of the time i boot it and its fine but sometimes the light comes on. The laptop read very low knock levels so im not surew which to believe. The mechanic and tuner said there was definately no knock but the sensor says otherwise.

Yeah making 260rwkw on GTRS on 17psi with more in it. They still have not played with the exhaust cam as my exhaust manifold (one of those stainless ones) cannot flow enough and boost begins to spike. Next step is to get a custom manifold and go for 20psi :P

you generally dont hear the ping @ an audible level while driving.

I reckon it'll be just one cell or two thats causing the problem.

Its very easy and common to happen as dyno/street are different.

You arent say... riding @ 4000rpm then planting it on a dyno etc.

Just different conditions which... probably a cell or two :P

im tending to think my sensor is just picking up engine noise and is too sensitive. I cant hear any pinging so it should be ok?

What R31Nismoid just said, you can't hear audible detonation and thats what kill's engines.

Do what paul said try taking a few deg out on the overall correction to see if it makes a difference.

Also the load on a dyno can be a little differnt on the street, i've seen up to 3 load point change from what was being read on the dyno.

I'm surprized they tuned it with knock that high on purpose :P

After my tune I too had a little knock when jumping hard on the throttle at around 4000rpm.

I think you'll find that it is most likely slightly overboosting into a cell that would'nt have had an overboost situation on the dyno run.

how much timing in the tune...

usually knock levels around 20 at full boost and high in the rpms is your goal on the dyno. as when you drive it on the street knock levels increase as street driving has different load....

i would say the tune is to agressive....timing is not the only thing that makes power.....

hope this helps.

same here, tuned my car on the dyno, 20 knock, and then took it to the street and pinged up to 80 - 100.

Dyno's don't load the car as much as the road.

Get it re-tuned. Or DIY the ign retard on the street if you have a datalogit.

i have the same problem, genrally in 3rd 4th boosting up a hill...

i think my car is going slower and the engine is making a groaning noise.

i wouldn't do this too much, if you can hear the engine straining downshift or something

I think you'll find that it is most likely slightly overboosting into a cell that would'nt have had an overboost situation on the dyno run.

I had the knock on the street when mashing it around 5000rpm in 3rd.

It certainly wasnt over boosting... just one cell had a slightly off value.

Its really a 5 mins (at the worst) fix if you can remember approximates of what RPM/Speed/gear and throttle position (usually WOT) then the tuner can work that out no worries

Just had it out last night. No problems at all. reving it hrd as and knock didnt go over 11. seems ok. no idea maybe cause of the heat?

pretty much.

As i said (a few times) it'll be one or two cells that have a slightly higher ignition value.

Next time it happens, note down roughly what speed/rpm/gear etc and tell your tuner. Should be able to fix it and it'll never happen again, heat or otherwise

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
