You know, if anything an aftermarket core will have more pressure loss because of the much much longer tubing (ie 500-600mm!) it has to travel thru. I wouldnt be suprised if the stock one outflowed an aftermarket one. But the temperature drop would be second to none.

FMIC doesnt give power on its own really, it allows more power to be made by letting you turn up the boost safely especially in hotter weather.

Sure it is related to the overall size of the intercooler, but thats a long way from being the most critical aspect. The tube design, the number of tubes in the core, the end tank design all would play a much larger part then the tube length when it comes to working out the ability of an intercooler to flow.

I would bet any sum of money that my 600x300x65 front mounnt has way less pressure drop then the std intecooler. It would be in the vicinity of 2-4psi better :)

...i will add in an exagerated example. If you are trying to blow thru a straw, you will have a hard time blowing through it. You will get choked flow in that what you are trying to force throught it is more then physically possible. So you will get a large pressure difference from inlet to outlet.

Now change that little 6mm diam straw to a 15mm straw, or blow through 4 or 5 straws together, it wont matter if the straws are longer, they will flow more. The aftermarket cooler has a different qty of tubes and differently designed tubes.

Sorry, Busky, but i think what you have said is so wrong, it needs to nipped in the butt before it becomes fact thats thrown around...LOL then again you cold be right and me so wrong...but i hope thats not the case ;)

Well I edited my post but yeah as I mentioned before, the pressure drop across the stock intercooler was 1.5psi at 170rwkw, so its not as much as people make it out to be. It was actually less again when I used a thicker (80mm) S15 core.

Needless to say its no excuse not to get an FMIC. Its definitely worth it.

EDIT - To illustrate my point a while ago with my stockie intercooler (same size on the skylines I believe) I had a boost gauge pre and post intercooler. THe difference was only about 1.5psi at 6000rpm, when the car was making approx 170rwkw. Thats stuff all really...

So whats your car.AN S15? It could be that they are not as bad as the old R32. I was measuring the inlet manifold with an accurate MAP sensor, and with the std cooler it was about 0.65-0.70bar depending on time of say (night cold, day hot) With the new fron mount it went to 0.85-0.90bar, but closer to the 0.85 end of the scale. Again the ambient temp did alter it a bit.

So an an R32, is was an easy 2psi improvement over the std intercooler...then like you said i get whatever power improvement from the increase inboost, and my power will be more consistant over a hard drive as the intercooler is more effecient.

Its an S14 whose intercooler is 60mm thick. I swapped it for a 80mm S15 intercooler because they were a straight swap. Out of interest I did pressure drop tests on both of them.

Anyways I have a Blitz FMIC and I would recommend it to anyone. The time it takes for a stock intercooler to become heatshoaked is verrryy short indeed. Just drive around on a hot day keeping _off_ boost, put your hand on the intercooler and you'll almost burn yourself!!

ok from dump pipe to intercoolers... anyways 470 for a batmlb front and dump would probly be the price for ceramic coating which is worth while getting but for mild steel which is ok not so blingin'! though there 395 from memory...well worth it... also

with coolers it would highly depend on what cooler you have blitz coolers only drop 0.06bar i believe but a china dodgey brothers one might drop 0.1 bar my r32 runs about 0.85bar with a cat back and pod so the chances of me running 1 bar are very good when i add high flow cat front mount and a batmbl front and dump hmmm turbo blowing goodness!

If your battery was low on voltage and you noticed an improvement in power when driving its probably because the ignition drivers were struggling to do the job with the voltage that was available to them.

Id be inlcined to have your alternator checked as well! When your driving shouldnt it be the alternator that is giving you a a nice 13-13.5Volts???

I'm also going to be getting one of these dump pipes when they are next availaible and was wondering weather i should get the stainless steel or the mild with ceramic coating?

Guys with the intercoolers it's pretty simple as 2 why u'd go a larger cooler. A 1.5 PSI pressure drop across an intercooler flowing enough air for 170RWKW is still pretty high. I guessing busky that ur running about 12 PSI of boost? A good intercooler should have about that pressure drop at about 20 PSI. Put simply the standard intercooler is more restrictive & while the aftermarket 1 may have a bit more lag (Piping length & size dependant also) it will cool the air a lot more once on the move. Cool air is more dense meaning more air in each cylinder on each stroke, which also means more fuel can be added = more power.

Think of it the same way as you would your exhaust system as far as the air flow is concerned. Just because the amount of air it holds is more doesn't mean it gets a bigger pressure drop. Its all about how big the holes are that the air has to get through.

Hope that clears things up a bit.

And personaly I'm going to buy a Split Dump off of BATMBL, while it may seem that for the money the gain isn't that great now, when u up the boost more when u up the boost more after changing the cooler & other bits, the gain will be even greater. Spend the money on the better system. It'll pay for itself in the long run.

    • Block bump. $400. As above cyl 6 needs bore or sleeve.
    • I would think making the argument that the travel is limited by a spring flexing against a spring perch as "the same method". Later on in the document they do state that the spring can't bind on full bump travel and cannot come loose in full rebound travel as well. (which is all very sensible). The laws are actually pretty sensible and reasonable. It's just that the people who enforce and check them don't actually read them or know them accurately. "Oh, coilovers? Instant fail mate. Don't even need to look at it." - Guy who will be instantly reported by me. There is probably merit to people who do get defected for height also get defected for the suspension in that state that allows it. I did never consider the people who are complaining about coilovers being picked on are also running around at 50mm off the floor.
    • I think given SAU's knowledge of E85 we can strongly conclude that 10% ethanol in almost any situation is entirely fine. Almost all of the myths against E85 were overblown, let alone E10.

    • They actually don't - They adhere to VSB14 rules just like Victoria. The rules are against CABIN adjustable height, and it quite clearly states that the height has to be within parameters. I asked the VASS engineer to confirm this when I got my car engineered and they refused to engineer the coilovers because they didn't meet the requirements for requiring engineering. (mine are height adjustable.) People "Not wanting to bother" with "Actually reading/knowing/adhering to the rules" should result in fines and immediately losing the ability to issue blue slips and/or RWC's in Vic.
