Pod Box....Really..WhY?

Got a pod recently for my r33 gtst instead of the drop in filters for the sotck air box. Does anyone have a Custom Air box Like on the Unique Auto Sport Site to house the pods in. Does it make to much difference, is it really needed. Can you get them in melbourne anywhere or if anyone is selling one, or make one please contact me either email [email protected] or PM me as soon as you can.

yo! , yes you need a box

not only will this seperate the cold air from the hot air which the pod would be sucking if purely exposed under the bonnet, if you get pulled over u will get a canary due to the pod but if its in a box it should be sweet.

there is a template floating around the forums i think INASNTS name comes to mind...do a search on these forums and im sure you will find the template...making it up would be a piece of piss.

In terms of performance, even an unshielded pod is better than the standard airbox. I drove my car with each, back to back on the same day. Yukk! to the airbox. I do want to shield the pod, but it's not urgent, as I don't even notice significant heatsoak in slow bumper-to-bumper traffic, except on really hot days (then again, you are in Australia....)

The legal thing is a bit of a hassle tho'. I guess there's nothing else for it ;)

i think a well ported box and pod filter are going to give pretty similar results. I think the whole pod thing is a bit overrated just because the standard air box is so screwy.. Make a few mods to the std setup and it will probably be legal and work just the same. Noise is a different thing - guess certain people like the pod noise (i'd have to hear both myself to tell what i'd prefer i think).

I definitely prefer the lack of noise, but I had to put the pod back on because the car was so sluggish with the standard box. Granted that was totally standard, and as you say Predator, modifying the standard box and using a higher-flowing panel filter may work about as well. Easier to just chuck in a pod though I reckon. Pity about the noise - although my wife loves it (hoon-girl :D )

I agree to some extent that it is induction noise that makes it go faster i mean which one of us DOESNT love to hear the sound of our respective turbo spooling up as you chop some looser in daddy's Gen3 V8 commodore??

But, at the same time there are advantages above the standard air box when using a pod filter if done properly.

1) Mount the pod filter to the air box (duh).

2) Build a partition around the pod filter (which i am hoping EnricoPalazzo will send me a template for)

3) Providing you have an aftermarket front mount intercooler then you should have one of the holes (where the original little intercooler was) free. Stick a piece of bell mouthed PVC pipe (both ends) into that hole.

The advantage of doing this is that you now have a large hole drawing air into a pod filter instead of that small spatula sized snorkel which actually runs over the radiator (good for extra hot air).

Another thing is that the ribbed pipe between the air flow meter and the turbo is no longer experiencing too much suction which can close it of. Yeah pretty dodgey i know but i have heard of that pipe closing up when the pipe is sufficiently hot and it has to work hard to suck the air in.

For the non believers get hold of a manometer (piece of pipe with water in it). Use it to measure the pressure drop before and after you use a pod filter (between turbo and airflow meter). That would settle all this arguing

A dyno before and after pod filter will do me fine.

R33NT is spot on. Only use a pod when you have a fmic. Then seal the pod in a custom box and with the remaining ic hole resize it to fit a 4-5 inch drain pipe, scooping air from the far right hand hole (passenger side) in the front bar (standard front bar).

One more time for the record...

Mine's use the factory air box on their 600+HP GTR's.

For 'alternative sounds' turn to the pod.

Power gains? Well over a stock paper element airbox a couple of horsepower (maybe 4 or 5) are to be had using either a K&N style replacement panel OR a pod with a cold air box. The standard panel will flow 900odd CFM, more than enough I'd say.

The air feed to the factory air box can be improved but, it is actually taken from the very best spot for air pressure (under the lip of the bonnet). Under dyno testing this is something that you won't pick up (the air movement is nothing like actually moving the car) but, the results under speed are worth the trouble.

Finally,

the sprung rubber intake pipe from airflow meter to turbo is quite restrictive indeed, more gains here (about double) than from messing around with the airfilter. Cheeper as well.

I already discussed this in another thread. I have read in one of the performance mags that removing the mesh from the AFM gives a gain (they did a before and after dyno run showing this).

One person in that thread complained about a bit of backfiring and as i stated the freeing up of the air flow may have some effect on the way the AFM measures. I think this is the case because in my apexi powerFC you actually need to tell it in one of the menus that it you have switched from a standard air box to a pod / low restriction device and i doubt that is just so that the user feels special.

As for the Mines GTR i dont really care that they use an air box because i can see that the size of the orifice that the air box is drawing air through gets very small at one point (as it passes over the radiator) and i will have to check but i really dont think it is any where near the diameter of the pipe the AFM is at that point.

i thougt mines INCREASED the size of the pipe not decreased it.

thats what they said in that R34 vid if i remember rightly (having a really bad memory one would probably say i havent remembered rightly lol)

R33NT,

Don't go 'turfing' that air feed mate for all it's little bumps it isn't going to restrict a 300HP@motor (if your lucky) GTST.If it concerns just add an additional pipe feed or re manufature it without bumps. The pipe from airflow meter to the turbo is however very restrictive and can be worth maybe 6+ HP , double the airfilter mod.

rev210 you seem to be fairly against POD's being a worthwhile mod - in terms of actually increasing power.

Everytime i read about pod's there seems to be conflicting opinions...:confused:

Does anyone know where I could get a replacement pipe *off the shelf* to replace the factory ribbed pipe from the AFM>Turbo? Or is this a *custom* job? if so who has done this and where did you get it made up? Prices?

I am not so much worried about it being restrictive as i am about it collapsing!

Please help!!!

    • I came here to note that is a zener diode too base on the info there. Based on that, I'd also be suspicious that replacing it, and it's likely to do the same. A lot of use cases will see it used as either voltage protection, or to create a cheap but relatively stable fixed voltage supply. That would mean it has seen more voltage than it should, and has gone into voltage melt down. If there is something else in the circuit dumping out higher than it should voltages, that needs to be found too. It's quite likely they're trying to use the Zener to limit the voltage that is hitting through to the transistor beside it, so what ever goes to the zener is likely a signal, and they're using the transistor in that circuit to amplify it. Especially as it seems they've also got a capacitor across the zener. Looks like there is meant to be something "noisy" to that zener, and what ever it was, had a melt down. Looking at that picture, it also looks like there's some solder joints that really need redoing, and it might be worth having the whole board properly inspected.  Unfortunately, without being able to stick a multimeter on it, and start tracing it all out, I'm pretty much at a loss now to help. I don't even believe I have a climate control board from an R33 around here to pull apart and see if any of the circuit appears similar to give some ideas.

    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
    • You don't have an R34 service manual for the body do you? Have found plenty for the engine and drivetrain but nothing else
