Could the people who leave their cars to warm up for 5+ minutes explain to the rest of us why you feel it's neccessary?

I tried to weigh up the pros and cons, and there doesn't seem to be much of an upside to allowing the car to warm up at idle.

Cons

1/ It's a waste of fuel

2/ It's a waste of money

3/ Car takes longer to get to running temp when at idle

4/ It pisses the neighbours off

5/ Motors are designed to have air flowing through them while the car is moving forward. This doesn't happen when the car is sitting still.

The air that is being sucked in to the motor is warm engine air... if anything, wouldn't this cause the temperature to rise faster than if you were driving, thus being more likely to cause damage to components which are prone to warping/heat damage?

6/ People figure that if the car has been "warmed up" that it's safe to thrash the crap out of it as soon as you get out of the driveway.

Pros

??

you must hav got up on a cold morning gone to start the car drive off and it just doesnt drive properly. It lags, stutters and genrally isnt happy

leting it run for a minute eliminates most of those issues and most importantly of all it gives u peace of mind. thats the main reason people do it

P.S. who gives a shit about their neighbours?? haha i hate mine with a passion

One minute is within reason...

I make sure that I can hear the lifters have quietened down so that I know oil is getting to where it's needed, but once that's accomplished, it's time to go.

However, I wasn't questioning one minute, I was questioning 5+ minutes.

As for the neighbour comment, I'm a victim of this.... a neighbour has an extremely loud (hunk of crap) car that they like to leave idling for up to half an hour at a time.

all of the above. Also, when it get's home the bonnet is lifted up.It stays very warm in the enclosed area of the garage especially in the summer months..

Looks like you and I are the only ones that do this

I'm surprised more people don't. It's a great way to increase the life of everything under the bonnet IMO

Start car as soon as I get in then choose a cd, put belt on, pack car. Anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Then I just take it easy keeping the revs down and boost at 0 or vacume until the guage reaches as high as it goes which is just below half. This usually takes about 3-5 minutes of driving. After that she's good to thrash.

As for cooling down, I take it easy for the last 2 minutes then shut it straight off. If taking it easy wasn't an option :O then I'll set the timer to 2 mins or so. I rarely use the turbo timer at all though.

Looks like you and I are the only ones that do this

You can add me to the list too

But i do it so I can cook my meals on the plenum :P
