hi, all. if you've read some of my previous threads, some of you may already know that i have recently purchased an R32 Vspec GTR from a broker. the car is a 1993 model, with an auction grade of 4(apparently very good). i was told this information. and was also told it was in immaculate condition. this was all before i saw the auction sheet. i looked at a picture and it looked very tidy. so i had them bid for it. I won. It was a very worrying month and a half and yesterday i finally saw the car in the flesh. in general, the car seemed to be in perfect working order. however, there are some, to some people they may think petty, but because i paid such a high price for this car, things which just.... just.... piss me off! i'm a pretty picky bastard. every nook and cranny has to be perfect! i know it is a 10 year old car. but there are some things like, a little bit of rust on the bootlid. the footrest is missing. the dash around the vents is starting to peel. the rear interior trims have bubbled and peeled, the steering wheel is starting to peel. i know that most of these are cosmetic, and like i said im not expecting a perfect car. but things like rust missing parts (footrest) who should pay for these things? is it my problem? i havent fully paid for this car yet. but i have paid for the majority of it. should i ask for these things to be fixed before i pay the rest? these little faults are small. but the golden rule in life is that "if it has a set of tits or a set of wheels, its going to be expensive give you trouble!" these little faults cost money. what should i do!?

Yeah, "buyer beware" seems to be the caper in this sitation...that is one of the risks you take when you buy sight unseen. Don't stress too much.. while it may cost you $1000? or so to get all that stuff fixed or replaced is that too much ontop of your overall investment. There are plenty of replacement parts around.

I'm sure your broker would have said that all care no responsibility.

He is only a middleman doing it for a small profit.

If you were at all unsure about the risks involved with the auction process ( usually not visually inspected , can't drive it , most times no interior shots , different grades at different auctions etc ) then maybe you should have bought from an Australian dealer where you can see it first and drive it.

Sounds like you want your cake and eat it , cheap auction price but someone to be liable when it doesn't meet your expectation.

If the clutch isn't stuffed and the driveshaft boots aren't split , then consider yourself lucky.......

yea like the guys said it is your problem but if the broker failed to tell you all this detail then i believe he should pay for it. i dont believe in the excuse i didnt know. Because you are paying him that 1000 dollars he should know thats his job

when i bought my car my importer gave me about 10 to 12 pic of it

the front bar had a little discolouration on it

it was missing the kick panel where the ecu was

and also missing boot carpet and sunviosrs due to roll cage

however i got this car really cheap so i took the chance

but like i said the importer should tell you every thing

you cant see everything in the pic?

my car is comming soon i hope i dont have major disapointment

when i see it compared to the pics =)

i wasnt told about the rust on my bootlid. i just called my broker, there seems to be some sort of denial in his voice. if i point it out to him, who should pay then? also, what can you tell me about my car from the vin plate?

you can tell from the vin plate when the car was built exactly.

about the 'who should pay', well it'll have to be you in the end. you have to remember, you're not buying off a dealer, where you can tell him/her, oh i want to buy it, but can you fix this thing etc, you're really buying the car off the auctioneers.

the guy you pay to (middleman), he simply is doing you a 'service' to get your car from japan to sydney, and a few other little things.

its really up to you to inspect the vehicle by asking for photos to be sent to you etc in the end, its a bit of a gamble, since you're buying something you havent seen properly, so i doubt the middleman is going to pay for those cosmetic things'.

Are you going to post this on every single forums until you find a group of people who agree with you?

The broker isn't liable. It's not his fault that the footrest is missing and the interior is worn out... He or his contact in Japan should have spotted the rust, but they didn't.

Bummer. That's the risk you take when importing your own car. If you don't want to take the risk of a little bit of rust, pay and extra $15,000 and buy from an Australian dealership instead.

You should have a got an inspection sheet before you agreed to buy the car.

Even then you assume the people who ship the car over leave it alone. Stuff stolen from the car on the ship/dock is common.

Just fix the stuff that is broken. You did save a lot of money over the cost of a similar car from a local dealer.

I never brought a car through a broker, and never will because like you I'm also a really picky b@stard. I perfer the idea that I get to see before I buy, and get to drive it cause the broker's agents can't tell you that either. Sorry to hear but just to encourage your thoughts, it's very rare to get a V-spec! ;)

Why do you think ppl pay $10,000 more to buy from a dealer in Australia. Take the saving you made on the car and fix the problems.

And next time, don't gamble if you're not willing to accept the loss.

ppl like you crack me up too, jumping to conclusions. yes, im having a bitch..... but no one said i wasnt going to accept the consequences. i am just asking for opinions, dont know whether you've figured it out yet or not dunc but it IS an discussion forum. I dont know everything like you do mate, thats why i am asking everyone else. Maybe they have been in the same situation i am in? Maybe the broker paid for it all? Now..... lets say to get everything fixed did amount to $10000.... you paid the bill.... 2 months later find out that everybody else who had similar problems, their broker wore all the costs......... how would YOU feel then? thats why i'm ASKING now.

tlai909 that was just an "Let's say..." scenario. i know now that having the broker pay for anything is highly unlikely. but thats what i was trying to find out. what they will and will not. thanks to all those that "discussed" with me.... :D

unfortunately id have to say ud need to cop it on the chin.

Its the risk involved in importing!! if your worried so much about the quality of the car, would have been best you buy locally.

I imported car 3mths ago, it was ex street drag GTR in japan, was a risk importing, but knew information about it, only fix required was replacing gearbox (which i took on chin)

otherwise, she's FANTASTIC, other day on dyno, produced 361kw@wheels

Importing cars that you've never viewed in real-life is a risk, but is alot cheaper, money u save pays for minor fix's.

My car was imported through UPI, that business is professionally run and their service best ive ever used.

Id recommend them :)

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
