bezender
hi all.just wondering what you all use as a media player on ur PC? i use VLC, love the layout and most things about it. the issue i have is it freezes over the lan, and also on my desktop... i have used the googleizer and tried the things suggested there, increasing the buffer helped a lot, but i still get the freezes in the past i was a big fan of media player classic, but i find the playlist a bit clunky so i have been persisting with VLC. does anyone out there use anything else that is worth a shot? ...::edit::... my os is win 7 ultimate Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/108819-computer-jargon/page/164/#findComment-5196829 Share on other sites
Aberax
I use Klite Codec Pack and VLC, could be some other issue that is causing it to freeze. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/108819-computer-jargon/page/164/#findComment-5196874 Share on other sites

Normsta
Downloading VB 2010 Express at the moment (http://www.microsoft.com/express/Downloads...10-Visual-Basic). I remember using this years ago, I'm willing to have another play around with it to see what it can do. Nightcrawler
Carl give ZPlayer a try ..... I use if for watching DivX movie/tv dls and it works a treat. Seems to handle different file types and codes better when doing fullscreen than all other apps I have tried. I also use the CCCP ffdshow/codec pack - has always been great. jrm
Have you tried Media Player Classic? it's pretty win - nice and simple like vlc, but I've had way less issues. As a user of vlc for a long time I've finally stopped using it after just too many crashes/bugs. SLED
guys I've got an old Benq laptop that does pretty much everything that I need for work. Except for a little more speed, I'd be happy to stick with it for another year or 2. Thing is, it has an IDE HDD (not a SATA) so going to an SSD to improve performance is pretty much out of the equation. Anyone here ever configured an SSD into an IDE connection? bezender
or something like this if space permits i have used sata to ide converters on 3.5" drives for a couple pcs i have built... no problems with them so far Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/108819-computer-jargon/page/164/#findComment-5207884 Share on other sites
Aberax
The transfer rate of IDE wont give you any decent performance with a SSD over the normal drive. But if you are keen on the SSD idea still, you could use an IDE to Compact Flash converter. Depends on if you have 1.8 or 2.5" PATA drive; http://www.solidstatecentral.com.au/store/...8b79bfa4f8f3fc6 http://www.solidstatecentral.com.au/store/...8b79bfa4f8f3fc6 I've bought runcore SSD"s off these blokes before and used them as upgraded drives in EEE's. Work very well. -D Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/108819-computer-jargon/page/164/#findComment-5208061 Share on other sites

This is what's in it now: WD1600BEVE Scorpion Blue 160Gb 8 Mb cache 5400rpm 2.5" PATA Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/108819-computer-jargon/page/164/#findComment-5208137 Share on other sites

SATAII 300... etc diff between sata1 and ide is not much at all - esp since your drive is a 5400rpm its slow as dogs balls... the other benefit is the wd probably runs 5watts when seeking and reading, the ssd will be about 0.1watt peak. You'll save a fair bit of battery with an SSD.. -D Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/108819-computer-jargon/page/164/#findComment-5208276 Share on other sites
SLED
you reckon the extra minimal performance difference is worth the dosh though? Wish I had some figures or comparisons between my drive and an SSD on an EIDE controller Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/108819-computer-jargon/page/164/#findComment-5208314 Share on other sites
Dohmar
you reckon the extra minimal performance difference is worth the dosh though?Wish I had some figures or comparisons between my drive and an SSD on an EIDE controller for the price? frankly no. buy a new laptop with an ssd already in it, if you want the bang for buck however ssds will speed up ur system, including outdated ide buses -D Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/108819-computer-jargon/page/164/#findComment-5208462 Share on other sites
