Hi all just after a bit of help or info....

My mate has had his R33 for a while now and recently has been defected for his air intake setup. He has to take it to the EPA on the 22nd to have it cleared and have no idea what needs to do to make it comply. It has an Apexi pod filter with no airbox.

We need to know, what it needs in terms of an airbox and also whether it can keep this pod filter ??

Are there any aftermarket airboxes or similar I can get to suit an Apexi pod filter ??

We just really need to know what I have to do so it will pass.

Any help or input would be much appreciated because as you can see we only have a week to get it sorted out.

***EDIT*** I AM IN NSW

HAS ANYONE IN NSW BEEN DEFECTED FOR HAVING A POD WITH NO AIRBOX ?? Thanks...

Cheers,

Trev...

what state are you in? in vic i believe pod is illegal if you have a FMIC as only one intake mod is allowed or something like that.

pod should pass if you get a box (someone on these forums sell them, fit any pod on the market) or if you're worried buy a standard airbox or borrow one to get the defect cleared.

also try doing a search on this topic should be some helpful info around. cheers.

Why dont you ring the EPA?

I mean, logic would have it that if they are testing you... you have to meet the requirements they test for...

Wouldnt they know what the requirements are?

:P

You must either have the pod in a fully enclosed box and duct air in, or have the stock airbox on the car. Since the aftermarket one then replicates the design of the stock one, just with better components.

Where abouts in NSW are you?

Me and another guy on here are making up box designs at the moment. PM me for more info if you want it.

I think it just needs to be in a box, unique autosports in sydney sell air box's for skylines with pod filters. Or you can make your own with some tin snips and a street sign!! Just make sure the writing of the signs on the inside of the box...

unifilter make an awesome airbox.

although its a complete set IIRC - as in pod and box.

borrow someones stock airbox for the day - or even buy a stock one from these forums, couldbe a few for sale, search :P

Yeah i bought one of Maxx's CAI boxes i was impressed with the work done.

made from aluminium and has perspecs top and i just use the factory air scoop.

Not exactly sure if it would pass the EPA tests. I agree with calling them to find out what the go is.

Best of luck dude.

The UAS ones look good, but aren't much good in the way of passing EPA regulations.

Mainly due to the fact that they aren't completely sealed.

A mate made a replica of one for me and after a run in with a lovely officer, he informed me of what it needed to be. I also checked alot of regulations as well to make sure I was getting the right info before I went changing anything.

I must add as well that mine was one of the old UAS ones that were made for a stock cooler, so had more holes then FMIC ones.

When I got done for my pod, what i did was got some aluminium, made two sides and a lid and bolted it to the car.

I managed to pass with that. I must admit i was really surprised as it looked really really shonky.

The epa guys/gals might be a tad more strict with the way they pass things. Good luck with that.

When the cop pulled me over and told me to pop my bonnet, he point to the metallic pod filter in my car and said that i would have to get rid of that as it was illegal to have it in there.

I asked him why it was illegal and his reply was, "because in the engine bay, temperatures get really really high and pod filters have a tendancy to catch fire and explode or something".

He said afterwards, " i dont want to be the one that gets called out to the scene because my car caught on fire and exploded because of the pod filter..."

what?

what crap?

The whole reason you can't have an open filter of any sort is because it would be taking in heat and gasses expelled within your engine bay, thus creating more out the back end due to poor induction.

Or at least thats how I read it.

Hence why and stock air filter, in any type of car, will have an intake from outside the car.

when i bought my car, it had a pod fitted and i was defected(nice 2hours after buying the dam thing) and he said it changed emmissions...but im not running a map sensor not afm...

all i did was go and have it engineered and now its fine...not in a box(altho im getting one to reduce heat soak) havnt bn pulled over yet so not sure how that route would go... wasnt cheap but i was having some other mods done anyway

having the induction noise is the whole point of getting the pod filter.. pefromance wise i find it wouldnt be any better than the standard box running a k&n panel filter

I'm still really undecided on if this is true.

The problem I have with the standard box is the inlet funnel just seems too damn small to do any good

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
