Single Turbo Skylines

Recommended Posts

It is easier and cheaper to get big boost happening with a single turbo. The main advantage of the two turbos is for better response low-down. If you're not concerned with this then there isn't much point having 2 turbos.

Of course, the twin turbo setup on the GTR is better than the single turbo on the GTS-t. But the GTR owners doing the single turbo conversion are usually bolting on one bigass $10k+ Trust turbo or the like, not a small turbo off a GTS-t :D

I dont know about the lag difference between using 2 smaller turbos and a larger single. From what people have said and tried, is that the single can be equally laggy if not better than the twins due to all of the exhaust going into the one turbo to hel pspool it up and not being halved to run two of them. Hope that makes sense, Im very tired!!!!

When I decided to do a complete rebuild of my engine, I decided to go a large single setup instead of a medium twin setup like a 2835 or 3037S for a number of reasons.

Primarily, price. With a TT setup, you have almost double the costs in dump pipes, wastegates and the like.

A single setup only requires one dump pipe and one wastegate.

Also the large single turbo is less laggy than the above mentioned twin setups. My turbo will spool at about 4300 and keep climbing past 8800. My rev limiter is currently set to 9000rpm in an effort to make the engine last as long as possible. The turbo itself is good for 35psi which would create as much as 500rwkw at the wheels in a GTR with the correct setup engine.

A twin setup such as the 2835s or 3037s setup won't spool till after 5000rpm unless you do a larger bottom end like Munro.

What about rigging up a sequential turbo setup to a GTR? Is that common, or too much effort? Wouldn't that overcome the problem of lag and give the best response over the whole range?

I'm talking about mainly Japan, because i know there aren't too many GTR's out here comparitively, probably even less modified.

I think sequential turbos are largely a waste of time for a performance car. They only really improve driveability. They also lower your off-boost threshold so you'll probably find that you're always going through more fuel.

To overcome the disadvantage of not having a sequential turbo setup, launch from a higher RPM and keep the revs up.

Are you sure you couldn't have fitted a bigger turbo to that ???

Appreciate the comments all.

Yes I could have gone a bigger turb than that but this one suits my hp requirements at the mo :D The only thing is that if I do go bigger now, I need a new manifold which positions the turb further forward. I do know of a car running the larger turbo and it's making 460rwkw on PULP on a base mapping

The turbo itself isn't actually a T88 but a Garrett equivalant which was custom sized wheel and exhaust housing to suit my requirements of a faster spooling turbo. The exhaust housing is the size of a T78.

where can i get an intake pipe like the one on there?

Call Unifilter and they can sort you out. That's a 5" pipe they usually fit to trucks.

Dude,

Obviously you weren't looking close enough to the 2 cars :P

Ben's turbo is BIGGER for one, his intake piping goes down through the chassis to the bottom where the indicators are on a stock front bar, and most importantly, his car is white!!

His rocker covers are black (used to be red), and his radiator shield is a stainless silver piece.

His intake plenum ain't stock. His catch can looks different. He runs Tomei cam gears.....

Should I go on???

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
