Screeching Sound

Hey guys i recently got this screeching sound whenever i braked and realised that my rotors were all worn down so i went and got it changed along with the pads as well. Thing is after changing em the sound got worse so i went back to my mechanic and he said it was just some new gooey stuff on the rotors coz their new. So he took em apart and he said he did some cleaning to it and the sound would still be there but would be gone after a couple of days of normal driving. He said to give it time to wear the remaining stuff off the rotors and let the pads wear in a bit. Now after more than a week the sound is still there and its really starting to get on my nerves It only happens when i brake at this certain level, not too hard or lightly. Its got my mechanic scratching his head as well but im going to take the car into the workshop after easter to get it out checked out yet again. Do you guys have any idea what could be the cause? Or is what my mechanic said true and it will wear off by itself slowly?

Make sure the face of the surface where the rotor meets the hub is clean and free of debris, i.e. the rotor is perfectly flat against the hub. Give the hub a power over with scotch brite or something alike to make sure the surfaces meet flat.

Similarly for the wheel to rotor surface - clean the back face of the wheel that mates the to rotor.

Have the anti-squeal shims been correctly installed in the caliper between the pistons and brake pad? Have they been installed at all? Has anti-squeal been applied to the shim / brake pad?

What brake pads are you running? are they known to be noisy at moderate braking force?

Mate I have the same problem. I fitted DBA4000s + RB74s + CRC Anti-Squeal paste on the shims. Worked silently for a few weeks and nowdays the damn brakes squeal on moderate braking. I'm out of ideas - it took a while before they started squealing so I assume the hub + rotor are mated correctly (it was a DIYer).

Could the pads be misaligned? Could it be fluid on the pad? Come to think of it, I may have allowed the *tiniest* drip onto the top of the pad when I bled them the second time?

I've heard with some brake pads, particularly performance pads, you will get some of the screeching sound. Forget the reason why, but that is what I have heard.

Sometimes it can also be the pads vibrating on the caliper.. to try to compensate for this, you can buy this red goo that goes on the back of the pads (the part that DOESNT touch the rotors) and it hardens up a little, sort of goes rubbery (i THINK), anyways, it is supposed to decrease the sound or get rid of it. I have bought some for my car, but can never be bothered ripping apart my brakes to do it. I've had it sitting there about 3-4 months now hahaha.

The red goo is most likely anti-squeal paste. Once the wheel is off it'd take about 5 minutes per caliper to pull out the pads, squeeze the goo onto the shims, and refit the calipers. Less than an hour all up, start to finish.

If you have RB74's & they are squeeling - go out & hammer the brakes for a little bit. The pads will then shut up for a few weeks...

Okay... on saturday I pulled apart my brakes and put the stop squeal goo on my brake pads... Ive been on a cruise and also done a bit of driving over the weekend. Both hard and soft. I will say if you have problems with squealing brakes, go buy this stuff. Its red and can be grabbed from your local automotive shop (ie. Repco, Supercheap etc), think it was around 10 bux... there abouts.

I have had little to no squealing.. Every so often i get a quite faint, soft squeal, but other than that... nothing. So I think it seems worth it.

Yes definitely get the stop squeal thing. Used it on my car and the squeals go away after a few kms.

If my 33's handbrake is engauged 2-3 notches,i can hear a screach screach screach sound from the rear,untill it is let all the way down.

I applied this stuff, it worked for a few weeks and now it's louder than before... I'm just gonna see how they are after the track day. hopefully i will punish them enough that they will think twice about squealing again

Hey guys, update on this is i went back to my mechanic to get it out checked out again. He still couldnt figure it out but finally said something about some sort of shiny glaze stuff that had developed on the rotors?? Anyway he ordered me a brand new set of the rotors for me. The new rotors worked great actually for a week.. Hardly any squealling and even if there was it would be very faint. BUT now its back Ive been back to him like 4 times now and im not sure i wanna go back again =.= Anyway im gonna go get the red paste stuff u guys mentioned and give it a go.. this is my last hope by the looks of it heh we'll see what happens

Just for an update guys.. I still have the screeching sound too.. I punished the shite out of my brakes at the track day on Saturday, and they are still squeaking.. lol

I give up!!!
