So my mate went to the BP servo to fill up.

long story short he accidentally pumped about 2 litres of unleaded instead of premium (ultimate).

he freaked out and then started to fill the rest until full with premium.

will the 2 litres of unleaded affect his car at all?

i said it wont but he wont beleive me so i thought i should ask you folks...

what do you think??

Hey guys probly a stupid question but do all skylines have to run on premium? :| damn thats gona kill my wallet!!! What about 180sx's ?? Cheers

Yes if you want to drive them.

They will detonate with lower octane and higher boost.

Its funny that the guy is worried about 2L of low grade in a tank of premium. If the low grade is 91 octane and high is 98 then it works out at about 97.75% octane. Worry? i think not.

not just all turbo skylines, all turbos.

My understanding is you can take this as a general rule: Any petrol engine with forced induction or high compression ratio (say 10:1 or higher) needs high octane fuel to stop preignition of the fuel, which can potentially damage engine interals.

There are a few exceptions - the Honda Jazz runs something like 10.8:1 compression ratio, but still accepts regular unleaded. But as a general rule, it works.

Well there are a few more that are cracking the 10:1 barrier with standard unleaded now. I know the new BF Falcon 6's (not the turbo's though) are running higher than 10:1 not sure about others, but it shows that it's possible with the right engine & tuning.

The manual I was given for my R33 says "Unleaded fuel with Research Octane Number 91 or higher". Does anyone have a manual that says otherwise?

If the manufacturer says 91, then whats the prob? Surely they wouldn't tune them for 98 and then advise running 91...

By the way the only thing that's been done to mine is exhaust. Boost is stock.

from what ive heard, Japan have better fuel? but either way, like Flipmo and GorGasm said, it is better if you run a (newer) turbocharged on a higher octane level. 95 or 98 RON.

Just wondering, how much is it for premium at the moment say...... in Sydney? Or Brisbane?

Yeah I'm just trying to save some money here, if possible... Even running 95 would save a bucks at the pump.

98 is about $1.40-1.50 atm in my area (south Sydney).

Bugger all. I wouldn't bother using anything higher than 95ron in a non turbo skyline. Anyone wanna argue with me?.

In fact I drive an R32 gts-t, and I only use 95ron the majority of the time.

I do live in a cool climate though. During the summer, or when I plan on giving my car a bit of a hard time, I always run 98ron.

You wouldn't believe how many people at my work put permium in their diesels thinking it's diesel.

Now thats no good.

i put 15ltr of diesel in a turbo cefiro on the way home from the docks once...what a farkin mess that was ..can still taste it

    • Some of the filler.   Also if I look under the top flap of metal it starts looking good quite close to the edge. I get the feeling it doesn't go much further.
    • So, I finally started digging at the bit of my roof that was cracking and bulging a bit. Well, it was just thick filler that was covering some pretty bad rust. I didn't find the edges, I was too bummed to keep going.  There are a few holes as you can see. There was just so much filler but looks like no attempt under the filler to prime or use rust converter, just slapped filler on exposed rust.  Anyway, I'm going to take the windshield out and find the edges. I'd love to fix this myself as I'm pretty sure it'll be expensive to get done properly. I was thinking I could just get a cut piece from another E39 and just weld it in place as it would be the right size and shape.  Thoughts?
    • This is the territory of the "Stage 1/2/3 Golf GTI/R" or otherwise off the shelf tune with (relative to before) minor mods. It's easier now. Downpipe and Tune and boom, big increases. Stage 1 OEM+ is where it's at. This is where the niche evolved into and it's really easy to see why. It's rare to even NEED to consider changing turbos or going to aftermarket ECU's or building bottom ends for more power. Stage 1-2-3 will get you a LONG WAY. • There is a way, but it's not with the same cars. You need to find the same vintage of car, that we had. Realistically, that was an affordable car with aftermarket parts around. So what people need to find is a car that had a decent base in its day, and can be modified. They're looking for a car year make of 2010 to 2015 really... Aus could have done it if Holden didn't fold as V8 commodores were cheap, and if Ford didn't get expensive thanks to COVID, then you could cheaply play with FG Barras. Realistically, those are just a bit heavier, four door skylines. I'm sure the US and UK have similar cars they could find.
    • Haha I do that.. thats when it chirps..The bit point for me is almost non-existent. Otherwise I stall it. But yes, in terms of performance, the clutch is solid af.
