Hey everyone..

How beneficial are cold air intakes?

I'm thinking about putting one on my r32..

I've heard that cold air feeds are no good, but putting the actual pod where the side mount used to sit is better. Why is this?

I understand that there isnt a set amount of power increase i.e. "a gain of 20kw"

I'm not 100% sure of this, but:

I know that just a POD by it'self will make little power differnces as it may be sucking in hot air from the engine... If you simply partition it off however, I have heard that you will get very little airflow, to the pod so it may also not be of much help... so with that in mind, im assuming that placing the pod where the sidemount used to be, you would get the best of both worlds, cold air, and good flow...

Although I'd be a little worried about it getting wet :S

At least get a bit of pipe to your filter, fresh cold air will help. I did it to my car and noticed the difference. Apparently you need about 10hp gain to notice it. Cant tell you how much it really was, but for the little outlay, Id spend the money.

Fair enough.

I'm thinking about putting it where the sidemount use to go instead of getting a pipe to it. But if its not all that noticeable then i guess i wouldnt bother..

Ligneringsoul - i didnt actually mean 20kw, i just said that for example to illustrate a point.

i wouldnt like to put it where the side mount was due to driving it and collecting water just like my mates did, drivin along and up sucked a big puddle of water wasnt good for his car, so i have my k&n in a polished box so its sealed from all heat ( except on the side behind the headlight) and with the open hole from the stock intercooler pipe, i just got some flexible tubing from bunnings and made a air duct to the vent in the front bar, still can suck up a little water if it was a big enough puddle i guess, but no where near as bad as the filter basically on the ground... if u put the duct going up with a sealed box u will get ample amounts of air, ive stuck my hand over the hole when its been on the dyno and thats alot of air...

2BNVS, did your friends motor actually fail, from ingesting water?

Have always heard about the external pod will suck water and hydraulic the engine but have never actually seen or had personal evidence of it happening.

At least four of my friends have pods sitting out the bay, two of them with splash guards and two with nothing which have been running for a couple years without drama. Not to say it cant happen, I wouldnt do it, but I've never seen it happen.

When you think about it, it would have to be a good effort for enough water to get all the way to the engine.

Firstly, the filter itself would hold a lot of it, then it has to go through the intake pipe to the fast spinning turbo, which creates heat, then it has to get through all the fins of the cooler, which would grab a lot of it and finally around the rest of the piping and up to the engine.\

For infos sake, I have an import R31 and cant run a cold air feed without cutting things up which I dont want to do at present so I have a pod inside the bay which only gets an ambient feed from the factories airbox snorkel and lid hovering over it. Better than nothong I guess.

thats easy,yes it is benificial.As long as there is none to minimal hot air entering the cold air box.

The car feels lilke it stays in a useable power band longer.

I am currently thinking of insulating the outside of the stocko airbox.Ive allready gutted the lid and smoothed out all the plastic vanes.

One of my other steps could possibly involve a cold air feed from the foward facing vent in the bonnet straight into the top of the air box virtually eliminating all of the air being drawn from the snorkel.

One bad thing about this though is the fact that more dirt will fill the filter.

I came back from driving 30 mins the other night and felt the crossover pipe.it was pretty much stone cold.I was amazed...M2C..

They do make a difference especialy on hot days just make sure you have your pod partitioned off from the rest of the engine bay or else you are probably wasting your time

      And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil

      Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.

      Unsolicited advice? Keep the engine as close to stock as you can. Nothing wrong with adding some boost and making a little more power, but given where you are, you really don't want to try to make it into a monster. I can't imagine the roads are up to it, and the lack of locla support when it grenades will be a ball ache. FWIW, If there is a dyno around that you can access, then brand new injectors are a good idea, which will lead you to (at least) putting a Nistune in it, which will allow you to put an R35 AFM on it, all of which will make it possible to make it much much nicer to drive and live with.
