hey guys,

im thinking about going down the thermo fan path and scraping the engine fan.

im thinking of installing 2 thermos infront of the radiator and was wondering what sizes or brands will be a direct fit.

Taking off the engine fan saves a kw or two doesnt it? ive also heard that the thermos will do a much better job at cooling.

anyone got any ideas?

cheers

have you done a search, been covered alot lately (last month or so)

depends on the fans you use and the shrouding you fabricate..

if your willing to spend the time to get it right (and the money) then go for it..

Yeah mate, i bought some EF Falcon thermos from a wreckers for $100 and placed them in front of my radiator (R32 gtst). Make sure you reverse the direction of rotation so that they push the air thru the radiator, not suck it thru it. Also, make sure you spend heaps of time fabricating (or modifying the OE one) a shroud so that when the thermos are on, no air escapes around the radiator. I found Clark Rubber to be a cold mine of sealing rubbers! Mine work much better than i expected, they push heaps of air. Ill try to find a photo for ya.

Shaun.

Oh yeah, ive got an air diversion plate that goes over the fans, so you cant even see em! I reckon they're great.

At the moment my r33 doesnt have a fan shroud even for the engine fan, dunno why just wasnt on the car when i bought it.

i heard that davies craig are good quality thermo fans?

i was reading up on the 2x14" vs 1 x 16" but didnt really get anything out of it.

how did you make a shroud so now air escaped around the radiator?

cheers

I just modified (extensively) the existing Falcon shroud, and made it fit to the contours of the chassis. I then put car door rubber on the edges of the plastic shroud so that no air could escape between the fans and the radiator. Its not an easy job, but the benefits are great.

Also, Original Equipment (OE) manufacturers will always make better cooling systems than aftermarket. Take note of the rake on the Davies Graig fan blades compared to the Falcon (or any other) fans. The Davies are inferior in my opinion. And its no good just bolting on a thermo with heaps of exposed radiator left around it.

oh ok, i dont mind spedning abit of time and money fitting it myself and modifying it but i think ill need someone to help me with the wiring as to when the fans should switch on and off.

also was it $100 for both the fans?

Shaun,

what temp based switch did you use to activate the thermos?

did you see any difference with the std shroud on v's off ?? as it would cause a restriction now that air is pushed through it rather than being pulled through it?

temp issues at idle in the city?

Suggest you leave engine fan & find yourself a shroud, nothing will cool as good as the factory setup. It is a clutch fan so it only drags with high engine bay temp. will free spin on the highway. If you insist on going to electric fans your mate is steering you in the right direction with the Falcon fans, but take note to the importance of the shroud. Bolting Davies Craig fans directly to the core is a waste of tme.

My own experience is that it's not worth an engine for the couple of kW you will release by removing the weight of the factory fan.

I found it difficult to get airflow through the radiator, so much so that even at fwy speed, a slight uphill would cause the fans to activate.

Hi All, just finish my thermo fan installation. I'm using BMW e34 fan (17") . Install direct to the oe plastic shroud with rivet & aluminium bracket. The signal from relay connect to the temp. switch that locate at the bottom of the radiator. If connect from tem. switch that locate at the intake manifold ( beside the thermal transmitter) the check light will bo ON.

Once the themp raise to the working temp. the fan will be ON aorund 5 sec only.....

Is it my connection right ? Advise please

    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
