Hey all,

I've read that the wastegate actuator off stock R32 turbos are set to allow 10psi from factory. Thus it being a fairly accurate and good way to get 10psi on an R33 turbo.

Just wondering if the same actuator can be fitted to an R34 turbo though? I'm fairly sure it can be as I believe the only difference between the R33 and R34 stock turbos is the compressor wheel being nylon on the R34 as opossed to.. can't remember what it was on the R33.

Also, it'd be hard pressed for an actuator to stuff up right? Perhaps before installation it can be 're-conditioned' or something along the same lines? Perhaps by cleaning the thing or lubricating the rod or something?

All answers will be greatly appreciated. :O

Thanks,

Andy

actuators can stuff up they can either get stuck shut or they become loose over time and dont hold boost. the easy way to check for this is when the actuator is off the turbo pull on the rod, if it is very easy to move them more than likley it wont hold boost.

All of the R33, R34 and VG30 actuators i've felt are very easy to pull open.

The R32 items on the other hand... my actuator has cloced over 200,000km's and its still 'almost' impossible to lift off its seat.

Actuators almost never stuff up, so I wouldn't let that worry you. :P

Do remember you can buy brand new adjustable actuators for around $120-$130. They can be purchased in a variety of base pressures from low 6-7psi right up to 17psi or so.

Unless the comp cover has been rotated the actuator 100% does fit.

I have had an R34 turbo in my grubby hands along side my vg30det and rb20det turbo.

The actuators weren't fiddled with unlike your 'r32 spec' one. I'm asusming they welded it in the incorrect position or when assembling the turbo the comp cover was slightly rotated causing the positioning to be slightly out.

The only actuator that wasn't an easy fit was the vg30det actuator as its arm is almost straight vs the rb's kinked. This is due to the comp cover being positioned differently. Its well known when fitting a vg30det turbo to an rb you must rotate the comp cover. As a result the stock vg30det actuator has fouling issues and you must use either an R32,r33 or r34 actuator.

I'd say something funky was done with your actuator/arm or something Alex, 100% I can confirm the actuators look identical and bolt up exactly the same, The ONLY difference is the spring inside.

I've even ran the R34 actuator on my vg30det turbo as I was fiddling.

EDIT:

I've attached a pic of the R34 turbo with its actuator fitted. Any one who has had their R32 or R33 turbo will quickly see that the actuator is principly the same.

I do remember a slight difference. The nipple on the diaphram housing thingo. The R32 item stems off the side where as the R34 item comes out the top and does a 90degree' bend. As can be seen in the pic, obviously this doesn't affect anything.

I ripped apart the turbo checked it out measured everything and cleaned it up.

I've mentioned prior that the R34 turbo runs the larger OP6 VG30DET turbine housing, same usual RB turbine wheel mated to the 'plastic' compressor wheel.

Essentially the R34 turbo is identical to the R33 Series 2 turbo but with the slightly larger turbine housing.

I assume Nissan dropped the larger turbine housing on the R34 as its more efficient NEO engine spooled up the previous model turbo a little too early + the larger turbine housing = less back pressure that results in improved VE at high rpm, improved VE = more peak power.

As we know the Neo does indeed make a health 206kw vs the R33's 187kw. So a little turbo tweak + the more efficient neo head see's more power.

Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
