Hi All,

just a quick question.. I am planning to purchase a pfc and then get it tuned after i get a FMIC.

would it be ok to get the pfc, plug it in and leave it "untuned" until i get my FMIC (prolly about 2 months down track)?

Mods I have:

turbo back 3' exhaust

hks air pod,

mbc set to 10psi

I guess the question i am asking is will it be safe to the engine to not tune it and leave it standard until i get the cooler?... will i still notice any power differences in leaving it "untuned" in the meantime? (i.e. after i plug it in)

Cheers

Can I drive around without it being tuned for a few days? Months?

You can drive the car around as you would normally but you should take care not to put stress on the engine. Basically don't fang around in it, as you could be running unsafe A/Fs etc and just causing more damaged. Best to get it tuned. Make sure you watch the knock levels if you do this to make sure there isn't excess detonation.

ahh cheers paul!

that pretty much sums up my question!

Has anyone else done this? and found it to be ok?

Cheers,

I hammered my car around for about 2 months before I got it tuned. Standard powerfc maps run as rich as hell so you're not going to hurt anything.

Just keep the boost below 10psi and you'll be right.

8psi standard maps - 140rwkw

13psi standard maps - 165rwkw

13psi modified maps - 209rwkw

:D

the tune is in nvram so flat battery wont erase. there are two ways to loose the tune;

1) ETC, DATA INIT, YES, Reboot car

2) incorrectly wire in ECCS relay so it's unable to save changes when power to car is turned off. this is usually happens from an engine swap install

just keep an eye on the knock meter... i've been driving mine around for 2 weeks on the base map. the powerfc base map appears to run stupidly rich, just going by the rate that it's guzzling fuel even with conservative driving!

As posted elsewhere, the R33GTS has Magic cat, Kakimoto 3" cat back, R32GTR intrcooler, 10 psi boost and a Pod filter.

The default maps in the Power FC most definitely DO NOT run stupidly rich, they are around 11 to 1 after boost build. However the ignition timing is very advanced (compared to standard). We were getting knock over 70 occasionally on Optimax (98 ron) and Ultimate (98 ron) with no difference between them, as you would expect. Filled it up with Optimax Extreme (100 ron) and knock is now zero for 99.9% of the time and we only ever seen 20 once in a month of driving everyday.

So my suggestions are to watch the knock readout and the dash flash warning. If you are getting some flashing, try Optimax Extreme (100 ron) that should fix the knock problem.

:D Cheers :D

What sorta mods?

We haven't experienced that until we change the turbo, with the standard turbo they (about 25 so far) are always around 11's.

Correction, I did encounter one with higher than standard fuel pressure that was 10.5 ish.

:P cheers :)

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.

    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
