Just thought I would share this video around here.

Its an RB20 NICS powered bluebird wagon at the ingham car show. Only reason I posted it up was that my brother used to own an R31 which had that particular engine in it before it go sold and stripped and put into the bluebird in question.

Made about 180rwkw in the r31 on stock ecu running a hitachi HT18 from a series 4 rx7, 2 rx7 cores welded together and 2.5" press bent exhaust. Running 13psi or some such.

Apparently it now runs an after market ecu and about 20psi. So maybe those really old nics arent as bad everyone makes out :dry:

Kills the rear tyres pretty quick too!

I guess the stock turbo had to be the major problem on them?

Stock turbo is SMALL. And the ECU is rather ordinary in its low state of tune. Slightly more restrictive intake than a silvertop. Basic engines are the same as a silvertop other than the 12 port head intake. Piss easy to get that sort of power with the ECU and a decent turbo sorted.

The NICS in my 200zr currently only pumps out 150rwhp, the stock ECU holds it back big time and the AFM is maxing with 10psi from an R33 snail....

I found the EXACT same thing with my NICS in both the Passage and the 200ZR - both with R33 turbos. At revs of around 6k upwards the voltage of the AFM hits pretty high figure of around 4.8v (which is 100% usage according to the SAFC) and as soon as it hits that, the thing is running so ridiculously rich it pisses and farts. Need to calibrate the AFM or use some sort aftermarket management to solve it.

Yep, if I had a scanner I would post my AFR graph from the dyno run, at 5500rpm the fuel curve goes rich down to 11.0 (and power curve dies accordingly) then it leans to about 12.8 by about 7500rpm. At 12psi it basically blows the spark out and gets even worse power curve. 10psi is only about 7-8psi manifold pressure thanks to shitty 7MGTE supra FMIC Im running.

The SAFC2 wasnt really designed with the NICS in mind, the AFM setting (4 if I remember correctly) is for the R31 ECCS AFM which I believe is actually somewhat different (possibly different voltage range). I have an SAFC1 (5 dial model) but its got lots less tuning scope. Mine also reports 100% AFM usage by ~5500rpm.

Basically the options from here are full aftermarket ECU or R32 ECCS engine swap....both come in at about the same mark (~$3K) and I am leaning towards the latter as at least one of my injectors is leaking and she is getting some km's on her now...

I have a rb20 out of a 200zr which used to have the top mount inter cooler. It still has the original turbo! Was wondering if anybody can help me out as to what type it is?

I'm currently on the look out for a bigger turbo.

My car has a 700x600x75 inter cooler, rb26 injectors, autronic sm4 computer. Fully manulised Jacob four speed trans.

My issue is I'm struggling for kw. I only have 145kw at the wheels.

Can anybody suggest anything to help me out?

I have heard of putting spitfire coil packs and removing the inlet butterflies between the plenum and the head? Apparently they are not needed!!!!!!!

Car ran perfectly fine when I parked it at the end of the year. I took the engine out and painted the engine bay, and put a fuel cell with an inline walbro 255 instead of the in tank unit I had last year. After reinstalling everything, the engine floods when the fuel pump primes. if i pull the fuel pump fuse it'll start, and as soon as I put the fuse back in it starts running ridiculously rich. I checked the tps voltage, and its fine. Cleaned the maf as it had some dust from sitting on a shelf all winter, fuel pressure is correct while running, but wont fire until there is less than 5psi in the lines. The fuel lines are run correctly. I have found a few threads with the same problem but no actual explanation of what fixed it, the threads just ended. Any help would be appreciated. I found the problem though. There was a break in one of the ecu coolant temp sensor wires. Once it was repaired it fired right up with no problems. I would have never thought a non working coolant temp sensor would have caused such an issue.
    • Hi sorry late reply I didnt get a chance to take any pics (my mechanics on the other side of the city) but the plugs were fouled from being too rich. I noticed the MAF wasn't genuine, so I replaced it with a genuine green label unit. I also swapped in a different ignitor, but the issue remains. I've narrowed it down a bit now: - If I unplug and reconnect the fuel lines and install fresh spark plugs, the car starts right up and runs perfectly. Took it around the block with no issues - As soon as I shut it off and try to restart, it won't start again - Fuel pressure while cranking is steady around 40 psi, injectors have good spray, return line is clear, and the FPR vacuum is working. It just seems like it's getting flooded after the first start I unplugged coolant sensors to see if its related to ECU flooding but that didnt make a difference. Im thinking its related to this because this issue only started happening after fixing coolant leaks and replacing the bottom part of the stock manifolds coolant pipe. My mechanic took off the inlet to get to get to do these repairs. My mechanics actually just an old mate who's retired now so ill be taking it to a different mechanic who i know has exp with RBs to see if they find anything. If you have any ideas please send em lll give it a try. Ive tried other things like swapping the injectors, fuel rail, different fuel pressure regs, different ignitor, spark plugs, comp test and MAF but the same issue persists.
    • My return flow is custom and puts the return behind the reo, instead of at the bottom. All my core is in the air flow, rather than losing some of it up behind the reo. I realise that the core really acts more as a spiky heatsink than as a constant rate heat exchanger, and that therefore size is important.... but mine fits everything I needed and wanted without having to cut anything, and that's worth something too. And there won't be a hot patch of core up behind the reo after every hit, releasing heat back into the intake air.
