Yes they fit, have fitted a dozen, no problems, only differnce is 6mm bolt on top of pump doesnt fit.

Hey guys,

my 100k service is coming up and i have heard that vl turbo water pumps are a direct bolt on for the r33?

is it worth getting one to save a few $$ or should i just fork out more for the rb25det replacement pump?

cheers

yes use one, will cost you about $90. bolt does not matter.

So a VL turbo water pump will be suitable for me to use when i get the 100k service done?

Is there a particular brand i should use or just nissan oem product?

will the 6mm on top not fitting matter?

cheers

I wouldnt risk it. If it leaks you have to strip it all down again. Original is only about $130-$150 from Nissan I believe.

My pump felt fine so I didn't replace it. Thought there was more chance of a new one going dodgy or getting something wrong on the install.

If there was any play or sign of weeping I would have replaced it. Also, if I was paying for labour I probably would - but with the genuine item

I used the rb25det one on my rb30det and could not fit that one bolt - it ended up leaking where the bolt is supposed to be. Lasted 5000ks

I got a rb30 one on and have not had any problems since. 55 thousand k's later

And is the warranty valid for labour? What will they say if you installed it yourself and it isn't the intended part for the job?

A repco Rb30 one will be fine provided it goes on an Rb30 bottom end!!

Point is why would you try and save $70-$80 getting one that misses out on one bolt and has the posiblity of leaking.

I.e a good 4 hrs down the drain and then you have to buy the correct piece anyway.

The Rb30 unit is not recommended for the Rb25. I went through the same process. I know my series 1 has a one bolt hole that doesn't line up which I think most people have found.

In my experience repco/autobarn one's tend to rip up the front seal after a year, go nissan...

Agreed. I used the RB25 pump on the RB30DET conversion and it leaked for me. I got a cheapo $25 pump from repco and its been running good ever since. Should have done this in the first place!!!

Get a price on the real item. If it is <$100 more than the one with the incorrect bolt hole then why bother talking about it.

There is more of a chance of it leaking with the bolt missing.

Sure, it may be ok. But is it really worth the risk?

wow $25 pump.. shiet.. The aftermarket item I bought was $83, there were slightly cheaper items but didn't come with gaskets and lacked warranty and a quality finish.

There's also a few different aftermarket variants.

I've seen one that has 'one' elongated hole that has the provision for the rb25det.

Yeah, if you can get an aftermarket pump with the elongated hole it will suit both the RB25 and RB30.

Otherwise you will have to leave a bolt out, if you try and interchange them.

Something you don't really want to do.

I think it's been shown by reputable people that the flow rates from the N1 pump aren't optimal for street use.

I think Nissan even sell one for about $130 trade that has the elongated hole..

Sometimes Nissan don't really know what's going on though

my n1 water pump runs perfect and never gets hot on my rb26 when doin low rpm in traffic and thats after 1200km of driving, though no flogging yet but i know they are meant for high rpm which is why i got it, so i cant see any dramas with them, but only time will tell :(

Brother, I am a mechanic by trade and run my own business. I wouldnt fit the aftermarket pump if i thought it might fail or leak as it would cost me money to replace it. as earlier posted, have fitted a dozen RB30 aftermarket pumps on RB25, Rb26 & RB20. Some of these engines making upward of 280rwkw. Pumps have been on cars for over 12 months in some cases and i havent had one leak. Im all for running quality parts, genuine if necessary as i never use aftermarket seals, but when you find a good quality aftermarket part that can save you $60, ill use it. That $60 will pay for drive belts etc. The brand of pump i use is a Truflow and is supplied by Auto1. Good luck with it. it is only a simple water pump replacement at the end of the day. I sure all will be O.K. which ever way you go.

    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
    • I assume clearances were all a-okay?
