Has anyone in Vic done any mods to their GTR gearbox? I busted 3rd synchro on the weekend :( and am trying to find out what is the best thing to do while I have the box out?

Labour won't cost me so I will save there but I do need a clutch also, so buying a dog gearset is most likely out of the question, just too much $$$$ at once to spend.

Has anyone heard of stronger aftermarket synchro's??? Where?

Thanks.

all he did was buy leewangs spare GTR box lol.

whats the budget?

No real budget as yet. Just trying to see what is good value for money. I haven't even decided which clutch to go for. Tossing up between OS twin or Exeddy Twin.

I think I will most likely just replace synchros in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Was thinking of getting short shifter, but have heard bad stories.

clutch - http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...p?showforum=146

Ring him and discuss pricing vs what you want.

Just have the box rebuilt for stock if you ask me.

Unless your over 400rwkw i wouldnt be worrying about gearsets or anything

Thanks for that. I will give him a call. Though I'm a bit reluctant to use another single plate... The Exeddy 3 puck I have was pretty hopless, slipped from day one.

The reason I would like an aftermarket gearset is not the strength but the fact that they are closer ratios.

Jim is the man. Trust me >_<

As for ratio's... just change the diff's to 32 GTR diffs :ermm:

Cool will give Jim a call. As for the diff I have just fully rebuilt the rear so I won't be getting rid of that anytime soon :D

Anyone run a short shifter in a GTR? What do you think of it for the track?

Jim Berry clutches are the shinitz. No doubt about it. JB FTW!!!

As for the gearbox, if you are running <400rwkw, stock box is fine. After that, I highly recommend the OS Giken Cross Mission gearset. Get the sandwhich billet plate and upgraded input shaft for peace of mind.

This combination in my car has held 600+ awkw with no problems whatsoever.

or your a shit driver :D:D

Breaking gears due to excessive power and wearing a syncrho ring out are two differant things. As I have mentioned previously, I am considering an after market gearset not for the strength reason but for the better response the shorter ratios give .eg mines car has R33 diff and aftermarket gearset.

As for Jim Berry, looks like he is the man by an overwhelming number.

Thanks guys much appreciated. :D

I've contemplated it in the long run, but I always figured just whcking in stock boxes was the way to go... but I guess it depends on how big the trail of stock boxes behind you gets...

Thats true, but apart fom the strength aspect of the OS gearset, the added respone you get from the closer ratios is awesome.

I've seen a GTR with the trust gearset and that thing got from 1st to 3rd in no time :D

    • By popular demand.. it was a coil. Got my hands on 1 new OEM coil, replaced with the one that made the less noise difference when I unplugged it while the car was running and started the car up. No stutter and the engine light was gone. I guess I’ll buy the other 5 they have lol
    • No, code 21 is very straightforward. It can only be the things described in that diagnostic flow. In fact it has no way of knowing that the spark plug resistance is out of spec.
    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.
    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go
