Hrm..

Trying to plan a RACV comprehensive inspection on a car im interested in purchasing.

Call up RACV and they like "$285 for inspection" and it will be from "8:30am - 4:30pm".

Does this sound right? an 8 hour inspection?

As it's an hour drive to the dealer and an hour drive to the racv workshop, it means I have to be up by 5:30am and get the dealer to open up the gates just for me at 7:30am....

Anyone had any experience with RACV inspections?

Thanks

When I bought my Subaru a couple of years back, I looked into getting a RACV inspection done.

My thoughts were it was too expenisve and too much hassle.

I have a family friend who is a mechanic, so I took the car for a test drive, drove it straight to his place(worked it out with him before hand of course), got him to look at it - DONE.

I would suggest perhaps you do the same thing with a mechanic you know or trust - if you slip him $50-$100, im sure he'd travel to the dealer and look at the car for you.

PS. Im thinking 8.30 - 4.30 means they will do the inspection at some time between those hours.

Patrick.....personally I wouldn't bother with the racv test esp with imports. Rather find a decent mechanic who will look at it for you as tests like leak-down and compression will tell you more about the cars health than anything the racv will do.

My original plan was to test drive, take to racv and then take car to a friend who is a mechanic. I'll contact him today and see which test he can do.

Also, Can anyone recommend an import workshop which could do an inspection located in/or around Campbellfield?

Inspecting car this wednesday.

Thanks :)

Yeah that is right mate if you take it to them. There are certain cars they cant do on site. Falcodores they can do at dealerships/private addreses but even my Lexus had to go to one of their sites off Lower Dandenong Rd and it cost the same (which the buyer paid for).

Report was good but ordinarilly they dont give it to the seller, only the buyer as they were the one paying. I requested a copy which the buyer OK'd as I wanted to ensure everything was rectified by Lexus under warranty before the new buyer took the car.

My g/f's brother had a couple of commonwhores done at dealerships and they took a couple of hours.

**Edit - Bec is right as $285 wouldnt cover half a day of labour for a mechanice let alone a full day. :)

okay just called racv inspection.

Mon-Wed: booking time is 8:30am-4:30pm

Thurs-Fri: booking time is 1pm - 5pm

Asked him for duration of inspection and seemed to skip around the question. Guess it depends on the car and its condition really.

Just got off the phone with Dr.Drift, Quoted $150 for a pre-inspection which involves:

- putting on hoist

- checking rust

- mods

- dyno run

- etc

He was also free at a perfect time so couldnt resist a booking, and also being half price racv's quote.

Will keep people informed.

Thanks

you might as well just stick to racv, atleast there somewhat qualified.

Maybe qualified for your average aussie sold car but not imports. Be aware of the racv test limitations like the fact that they do not unbolt anything....ie they don't even take the wheels off to check pads and rotors.....forget them finding oil leaks hiding underneath engine covers or heat shields etc.

i wouldnt be putting someones car on the dyno...if something happened, there could be a bit of trouble for you with the seller....

This is true...

No garuntees on a dyno and if it blows, you will be paying for repair.

Is only half the distance away, not sure what he will charge for and inspection though, give Vic a call.

Where is the dealership located?

i got one done 2 weeks ago, cost me $287 at the Seaford one.

Dropped my car in at 1pm and picked it up at 4 30pm.

They pretty much examine the whole car and give u a full report. PS they take ur car for a spin too to see what it drives like

good replies! very helpful :(

Mine was a proper RACV inspection.

I had 2x Supras until last week when i sold the NA. Buyer wanted me to go get a RACV inspection done on the NA and i said i would if u paid me the $287 so he did

IMO the $287 is worth it if ur going to buy a car, they picked up all problems with the NA that i knew of and even more

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
