Hi guys, recently put my apexi air intake air filter on my car

i have noticed when im in 5th gear on 100, if i slowly put my foot down and creep into positive boost

it starts to hesitate, and jurks the car a bit, But if i put my foot down quicker, drives normal

im thinkin, its cold, and by slowly puttin my foot down at 2800rpm ( what it sits at 100)

the computer only wants a certain amount of air to flow in, and being tuned with the k&n panel filter

The pod filter is suckin more air then required, and feels like the car is choking.

But if i stomp it, it goes, no jurkin, goes great, probably because theres sufficient air getting through, and maybe not enough, who knows.

Probably the only solution is to wait till i get into put my other gear on and see what happens then.

And one option i am goin to try is to lower the psi from 12 to 8 and see if it still does it, and maybe even 6psi.

Has anyone had this problem before, or know what im talkin about.

Any help appreciated, But last resort is just goin to wait for tune

do a search on rich and retard, you are encountering excess airflow protection it sounds like.

learn to read. he said that it does it when he puts his foot down slowly, but doesn't do it if he stomps the gas. if it was r&r it would do it when he stomps it, but not when he slowly puts his foot down.

what other mods do you have? how old are your plugs? have you checked/taped up the coil packs?

i have a similar problem, but it only started doing it when i put my remapped ecu in. haven't really tried to fix it, but i know this new ecu dumps a lot more fuel in than the old 1.

I have

Power fc

AVCR

FMIC

Hiflow plain bearing turbo set on 12psi

Ces Racing split front/dump

Walbro fuel pump

Apexi power intake

3" exhaust

hiflow cat

Plugs are probably close to 4 months old

Standard coils, havent checked them at all

well you can definately disreguard what paulr33 said about r&r (thats just his answer to everything).

with your plugs being 4 months old, how many k's have they done, and what type are they (copper or irridium)?

it could be to do with the timing, or the low load fuel map.

as i said, since i put in my remapped ecu, if i just sit in neutral and hold the revs at about 1300rpm mine will pop and miss a little bit, but once i get into it its fine.

Rolling the power on vs stomping on it will have the ecu running through a slightly different area of the map, or passing through a poorly mapped area of the map quickly rather than slowly so not showing up.

If it was a load related miss due to plugs or coils i would expect it when you floor it rather than roll the power on so it's probably just a rich (or lean) bit of the map

I'd say a touch up of your tune is in order

i reckon i might of done bit over 7000kms??

they are irridiums

But yeah, looking at it, from only doing this since i put on my pod filter

might just need a touch up

and will be putting in 555cc injectors z32 afm and fuel reg within the next couple of months

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
