The weight of these things these days really does push them away from being a real 'pocket rocket', and that goes for the MPS and XR5. After all, they weigh nearly as much as your average R33... except of course have the strong AWD advantage to get power to the ground.

AWD? :pirate: All the hot hatches in the $30-45k range are front drive (except the WRX hatch of course).

The quote about wheelspin in 4th gear with 3 people in the car is disturbing. How your average joe will handle it would be questionable..

That quote was in the context of wet weather performance testing. It would not spin fourth in the dry (I would imagine).

oops.. getting mixed up with the AWD reference on the last page. Even if while they are FWD, I'd say they would have a lot of stability tricks your 10 year old FWD wouldn't have though.. I don't think you can claim "oh no torque steer", a lot has been done to overcome this in FWD.

Plus, front wheel drive wheelspin doesnt exactly slew the car sideways, its just boring...

FWD loss of traction can be just as dangerous to somebody who doesn't know what to do in such a situation.

few interesting notes about the 3 MPS

direct INJECTION, yes thats right just like a diesel, runs extremely high fuel pressure, like in the thousand/s

but is still ignited by spark (unlike a diesel)

runs 16psi of boost, awesome.

So what the hell does one do when they wanna upgrade injectors??

I had a hatch the best hatch ever built. a Nissan Pulsar GTiR that thing was amazing. just like a GTR multihtrottle bodies solid lifters and AWD. mini GTR. and it dnt understeer that much. gearboxes and clutches wher the issue thats why i upgraded to a GTR. Mazda 3 MPS sounds ok but for the price why not get a evo or a wrx  more fun to be had.

agreed big up the overpriced EVO's, awsome car.... oh wait.. I live in aus, I'd have to pay damed near double in equiv $$ values to get it seccond hand, then again theres always the way overpriced wrx's running around.....hmmmmmm

ok i wont go to the over priced second hand car market we have but still, definetly go the real AWD, not your stocker rexy, atleast the sti has dual limo diffs... actually... dont remember when the rexy got the limo diff in rear... i think the base wrx has them now to...

The Mazda 3 MPS is made to make money in the competitive hot hatch market sector. And for what it is, I like it. No point comparing it to past cars or other cars in different markets in that price range because it is irrelevant in a money making sense. Mazda have a great product to take to the Golf GTi, HSV VXR and Ford XR5T (etc) and is my pick of those.

On the other hand, if I had $40k to spend on a car, I wouldn't buy a Mazda3 MPS. I honestly don't know what I would buy having just sold a second hand car for that much. Maybe an EVO? Maybe a modified GTR? Maybe (another) Monaro? Maybe a Typhoon? But probably a S8 Spirit R, RZ or S6 SP (1st choice) RX7 though.

    • Working through possible solutions of converting my mechanical speedo.    Anyone know what type of speedo sensor the factory r34 gtr getrag has ? what the output is ? I assume its not a VSS and more a voltage like earlier speedo sensors ? Can an ECU read it ?

    • I can get more photos of it here soon and I plan to make a thread detailing the process. I received the car this way and it sorely needs refinishing. That is probably the most appealing photo of it. Up close it is fading, cracked, and needs to be re-glued. Depending on their condition I'm on the fence between refinishing or making a new set.  Another angle hiding the pimples and razor pumps
    • According to this thread the RS4V with build plate RC40 comes with the R200 diff @ 4.083 ratio as well (mine has said RC40 denotation). We may need to check if the axle stubs are the same pattern as well. The auto subframes have longer axles. However I think yours being a later Series 2 as well, we should have the same bolt pattern for the diff stubs. Unless your upgraded rear also has upgraded axles. Either way, I would not be opposed to pulling the covers to check so I can inspect that  fancy rear core  Also I don't have HICAS. I don't believe that should change things but I hope the people here with heaps more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong   Let me know if you want to attempt to make this work and I can get some pictures of mine from under the car.
    • It's not that straightforward. For example I have had this code because my ignitor/power transistor wires were unplugged. It knows something is wrong but has no idea what it means. If you want to actually diagnose this I recommend following the service manual flowchart for code 21. Ohm out the harness, coilpacks, inspect the ECU, etc. And again, it's entirely possible for there to be no problem at all but if you're running a different coilpack it'll trigger the code because it doesn't like what it sees.
