There potentially can be a lot of difference

HKS/Garrett etc. Have put a great deal of money and development.

Places like GCG also put time and development into thier hi-flow/hybrid turbos etc.

Some places however do not. They simple slap some wheels in either end with a housing and thats about it.

They dont perform nearly aswell as thier more expensive/reasearched/developed brothers and as such you'll never have as good performance.

How much performance? Thats up for debate on a case-by-case basis.

By the sound of the turbo you speak of, its been modified and have the internal wastegate removed, hence the need for an external gate.

Thats probably issue #1, you'll need a spacer plate, modified stock manifold, or a new manifold to be able to accomodate the EXT wategate, which for a street car/mild applications really is going too far, and its pointless added cost.

Problem #2... kinda comes back on yourself. You need to find out the exact wheel trims/housings etc etc of the turbo for the resident experts to be able to give some indiction of how it will perform

At face value, if someone is saying to you "its 500hp, good for 30psi" then its gonna be just some bucket of shit turbo thats gonna be either laggy, unresponsive or surge like crazy.

    • Any pics of that R34 console conversion?  I've been thinking this would be close, but if you have pics, that's easier than going to bother the local guy with an R34. You won't believe this, but I'm building your twin in Florida!
    • Apparently I registered here in 2007, but now I have a 98 Stagea RS Four V (series 1.5).  It came with a LOT of work done to it, and everything looks like it was done a long time ago then stored. Currently figuring out what's in it, fixing age-related issues, and 5-speed swapping I did a lot of SR/KA ROM tuning and S13/S14 building in the early 2000's, so I'm familiar with this vintage of Nissan, but this is definitely a new challenge!
    • I've only ever washed the R34 and used quick detailer, I've never polished/waxed it which is shameful to admit. I got a friend over who's recently started his valeting company to come give the car some paint love. He didn't machine polish it so there's still some minor swirls, plus with the roof and bonnet having some paint defects he wanted to be careful (see a previous post about that) Having not covered not many miles since ownership, the cambelt was due to be changed from age. Wayne at Auto Extreme supplied me with a genuine belt kit and waterpump. I took the car to a local garage AP Tuning to have the work carried out. Gary has an incredible reputation when it comes to Evos in particular but is very knowledgable on all things japanese too. The daily has been off the road for a couple of weeks so the R34 has been on daily duties. I forget just how nice it is to drive and was a great change. I just wasn't a fan of the fuel consumption (to be expected) A couple of random photos one evening after work A bonus pic of the daily Mazda 323F V6 on recently fitted R32 GTR wheels
    • Hawk 5.0 pads - still wearing them in but already biting very hard, and a very progressive pad. Cost literally 4x as much as the Remsa pads, being imported from the US but, so far so good.
    • Yeah back online, big job to get that stuff onto a new Wiki but probably needs to be done.
