Hi peeps,

Need some info on this before I head off to a muffler store. I have a 3inch (i think its cat back) exhaust with a cannon tip muffler which all came with the car direct from japan. Trouble is that under some heavy foot acceleration, the exhaust gives out this loud nasty pop when the gears change. I dont want to loose the 3 inch pipe work but the sound has really got to me. Anyone else with this problem? what exhaust do you guys have on your cars?

My wifes RS4 does the same thing. I think they over fuel a bit on lift off and hence the pop. My 260RS does the same thing with the standard exhaust (she does flames though, which is cool). That is being changed soon. I wouldnt worry too much about it,

Cheers,

Ken

Sounds like the wastegate, but mine is more of a brrrt sound than a pop, mine is 3" turbo back.

Mine pops on overrun, and quite regularly too. Mine has the standard ECU, but it's been converted to manual, so I can kinda induce the popping at will with some heel-and-toe or throttle stabs on downshifts.

Dunno if it shoots flames, but I'd like to find out. Might either get someone trusted to drive it one day as I follow, or get someone to follow me...

Nope, ONLY myself and the wife drive it.

The only other time I have let someone else drive it was one of my best freinds when I was married, and even then I wasnt happy abou tit, but the wife insisted that we rode in the back, <sighs> so yeah.

No I do not like the idea of someone else driving my car, it is hard enough letting the wife bloody drive it.......... :D

Hei SKA so what you are saying id you value the car more than your wife?

:( AHAHAHH!!!!

Well to tell you the truth though i dont like people driving my car as well.

i LOVE getting driven by in my car

nothing like hearing YOUR car SUCK, FLUTTER and ROAR past :(

Then you think....so thats what it sounds like when i boost off in front of someone in a "fast" car, muahhaah

I got told my car sounds like "someone roaring and ripping their throat open at the same time". I was like, oooooo, then yeh, it does :D

Well i run the bog standard factory ECU so can't really say if im running lean or rich....good enuff cause to get a stoich meter installed. anywayz if the car runs rich on the standard ecu ...does that mean we can get away with using 91 ron pulp?

and just side tracking on the issue, how much boost can I run on the factory ecu before the injectors max out, the fuel pump suffers a heart attack or the MAF goes crazy <<whichever comes first

Mine is a stocker with 3" cat back. It always has a nice burble on back off with the odd snap crackle and pop up the top, after hard acceleration.

Exit is very sooty, dont know if it flames. Got to get the DFA finished and fitted.

hey fcruz3r, check your plugs and buy new ones and gap them at 0.8 this shoulf fix your problem reset the computer and put BP ultimate ot shell optimax in and it should be as good as new and wit the pop in between gear changes this is normal as long as its only one missfire

dont you guys let other people drive your cars?

not a chance in hell, ive already had one of my cars written off by a mate and i'll be damned if im gonna let anyone drive my car again. not even my girlfriend.

the other day my dad moved my car from out of his workshop to the parking bay (about 10 metres) and put the front bar into the gutter.....NOT HAPPY JAN!

The Autech front bars are a bitch, they sit very low (aftermarket sus doesnt help) and stick out a mile. Mines been off once for painting and is just about due again!

Thanks for the tip QIKEXT. Yea currently its just a single loud pop between gear shifts...must be just an RB thing. I'll get the new plugs anyway ...do you know the exact code number/make for the oem plugs? what about resetting the ecu..how is that done...is that like disconnecting the battery terminals for a couple of minutes before putting them back on?

I thought to reset the stock ecu, dissconnect battery, pump the brakes to discharge any capacitors still holding charge through the brake lights, reconnect battery.

But I still fail to see what that actually accomplishes, I mean it doesnt store any data, does it?

    • So stock ECU does not like anything above 10 psi?  That Nistune one is just for "try" if it will be any different, I know it need to be tune for that. I know but YOU may know about these problem but i/we dont. They few little Skylines here let alone people who know anything about tham so that is why iam asking here
    • So now we have a radiator with no attachments whatsoever. It lifts up with a particularly tight spot between the drivers side air box mount and the lower radiator outlet, but if you've got this far you will sort that too. This is the lower mounts with the rad out so you can see where the rubber bushes go, it is a straight shot upwards Done! Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, with blood less likely to be shed.
    • Right, onto the second last trick. The Air Con condenser is mounted to the front of the radiator and stays in the car when the radiator is removed. There are 2x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the condenser to the radiator, remove those The bottom of the condenser is attached to the radiator with clips. You need to lift the condenser out of those clips and clear (up, then forward). f**ked if  could work out how to do that last bit with the front bumper on. I hope you can, and you share the trick.  Bumper removal probably deserves its own thread one day once I've recovered the will to live, but basically you need to remove the wheels, front inner guard liners (clips and 10mm headed bolts), the self tapper between the guard and the bumper at the rearmost point of the bumper (same as an R32 that bit), any remaining clips at the top/front of the grill, an absolute bastard design with a plate that holds the top of the bumper above the headlight each side (only 1 bolt which is tricky to get to, but the plate catches 2 places on the bumper and must be removed....carefully!) and push clips between the bumper and guard under the headlight. If you've done all that you will be faced with wiring for the fog lights on both sides and in ADM Q50 RS at least, 4 nasty tight plugs on the driver's side for the ADAS stuff. So, the clips at the bottom look like this on drivers side (looking from the front) And on the passenger side (also from the front), you can see this one is already out Clearance on both of these are super tight; the condenser needs to move up but the upper rad support mount prevents that, and the radiator can't move down far because it is (rubber) mounted. Once you achieve the impossible and drop the condenser off those mounts so it does not stop the rad moving, you are good to go
    • OK, next the shroud needs to come off and there are a couple of tricks. Firstly, there is a loom from near the passenger side headlight to the fans, coolant temp sensor etc and there is no plug to undo.  In my case I was OK to leave the shroud on top of the engine so I just undid the passenger side fan plug and about 10 of the clips which gave enough free wire to put it aside. The fan plugs were super tight, the trick I used was a small falt screwdriver to push down on the release tab, then a larger flat screwdriver to lever the plug out of the fan unit....be careful with how much force you apply! If you need to remove the shroud altogether for some reason you will have to deal with all the plugs (tight) and clips (brittle)....good luck. I removed all of the clips and replaced them with cable ties that I will just cut next time. Also, in the Red Sport / 400R at least, the intake heat exchanger reservoir hose is bolted to the shroud in 2 places with 10mm headed bolts; so remove them (the hose stays in the car; no need to undo it at the t fittings down at the radiator lower mount. Once you've dealt with the HX hose and the wiring loom, there are 3x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the shroud to the radiator; remove those.   The shroud then lifts out of the bottom mounts where it sits on the radiator, up and onto the engine out of the way. Simples
    • Ok, disregard my “rate them” comment, sorry for my unrealistic input
