Hi,

I was curious in to what good speaker setups would be under my budget.

Say under $500 if possible.

I don't really have a clue about the car audio side of things.

I already have 2 fusion 12" sub in a box and a fusion class d amp.

I notice that my stock speakers can't really cope being with the subs. I have to keep the dvd head deck volume down so low just to hear the music without all the bass it gives.

Just really have been trying to decide what speakers should I replace them with.

Also after getting new speakers will I need another amp?

I have no clue to what size speakers I should get because I'm worried that some don't fit.

As you can tell I have no clue to how things work in the audio side of cars.

Any advice would be great. Really after clear quality sound

Thanks

You should be looking for a set of 6" splits. A 2 channel amp to power them would be ideal, but not necessary. Just take your favourite CD down to your local car audio place and demo a few brands that fall in your price category. Pick a set that you like the sound of.

If you really want a particular brand/model recommended, i'd suggest buying a car audio mag that does a roundup test of models in your price range and go by that. At least an test session like that is more scientific than individual recommendations you're likely to get off a forum.

im getting some pioneer kevlar (yellow ones) 6x9's for the rear off ebay for $225 including postage, rrp $415 i might need some mdf spacers (jb hifi $10), il get some splits a bit down the track when i have more cash.

this was my first mod apart from getting a new deck because it would provide my car with a little more bass/mid range from the back rather then getting blasted with treble from the splits at the front or a massive sub spewing huge amounts of bass at me from behind.

...cant wait to waste more hard earnd cash on it

So the stock size speakers at the rear are 6.5"

Is there a DIY in here to install a 6x9 at the rear?

Because I was told that I cant fit 6x9s without taking that child thing whatever it is. And that its illegal to take that thing off.

Sorry have no clue.

Btw are jaycar 6.5" speakers good?

Anyone had any experience?

Btw are jaycar 6.5" speakers good?

Depending on which ones, how you mount them and how you power them.

Their yellow kevlar ones always seemed a bit cheap and nasty to me, as well as any of the other car range.

That said, I did use response 6x9s in my charade and they were quite good.

When I did the stereo in the pulsar I used the carbon fibre 6.5" woofer and found them to be quite agreeable with plenty of midbass. I had them powered off a 4x100W response amp and my ears cried "enough" before they started distorting.

If you are happy with the Fusion Gear you currently have why dont you check out the new Fusion Encounter Range.

Good Bang For Buck and you would be able to score an amp with 4 speakers for under $500 at the moment,

Eg.

Encounter

En- am6004 ( encounter 4 channel amp) $269.00

en-cm65 ( encounter 6" splits) $99.00

en-fr653 9 encounter 6" 3 ways) $69.00

Saw all these products on display the other day at my Local REPCO. Gotta say, they sound awesome.

I had to ask the guy if they had botched the prices.. but no, they are right...

I guess I just have to do some shopping for speakers.

Does anyone prefer brands over another?

Say crappy brands to stay away from?

Yes, take your time. When I first auditioned speakers for my Charade I went to about 4 or 5 car audio places.. listened to everything with the same couple of CDs, and then gradually the right choice pointed itself out to me (Boston Acoustics splits).

The only thing I will say is f**k Sony Xplod in the ear. They are woeful.

I'm an audio snob though, when people say "you won't do better than Pioneer" (or Alpine, or whatever) I do my best not to laugh at them. :(

this might help you decide

front MTX 6" TX6001 its a 2 way comes with splits, the price is 330 from strathfield, i got them for 250

back Pioneer 250 Wats 75rms 6" i stole it of my friends car after his accident

Alpine S 12" sup

Rockfor amp 700watts running the sup and the front speakers

audioline amp 200watts running the back speakers- stole it of my mate as well

i can only listen to it when the volume is on half way, other wise will be just toopo loud

pictures of where i placed my tweeters and the crossovers

i think there is a d.i.y that shows you how to completely pull out the parcel shelf and replace it with mdf, the guy did a good job on it too but there is alot of f**king around involved.

as for speaker brands....MMMMMMmmmm soundstream/mb quart make some good stuff

i made up an mdf shelf lol fitted it and everything ready to go in just never got round to carpeting it might do that tomorrow ...

get yourself an amp that will give 50 ~ 75 ginuine watts rms per chanel ... a good set of splits (ive got pioneer only because they were so cheap i couldnt say no ... but go for boston acoustics man they are great sounding splits ) & just something basic for rear fill nothing flashy ... you want the front stage to sound the best...

remember its better to over power your gear than to under power it also so the bigger the amp you can get the better (this also gives you room for better gear) ... if you cant afford to get all of it get only the amp and the front splits because these are key to a good sounding system ...

things like an mdf shelf and sound deadening in a line are a good idea also ...

and if you are going to be running two amps get yourself a capacitor also jaycar one will do fine ... otherwise you'll over tax your cars power when you play your music loud your lights and shit will dim and its not good for your car ...

ok end rant

Thanks for all the help guys.

I have noticed how many responses I've read that people prefer the boston accoustics splits.

How much are they for a pair?

If they are too dear, are there any pair of splits that are very similar?

i got 4 jaycar kevlar spits front and rear in the standard pods modded them some and it sounds great i got a average 4 x50 watt head unit with the car its not super fantastic but sounds clear with good range now i am looking for some sound supression on the doors and boot for with heavy bass bits of some songs i can get some distortion :D

now i havent totaly rules out the sanyo head unit delivering clean singnal its consitint in where it distorts but not everything i expecting to distort does so i am now looking for some sound deadening

but to the point these jaycar speakers cost just on half the price of the sound storm and sound great to me and everyone else for the last 2 weeks ;)

    • Yeah pretty impressive hey, good to see quality products not over-shooting their prices. That's what drew me to buy the hypergear turbo, just a shame I've never got the chance to see it in action
    • Thank you GTSBoy and MBS206 I have done the compression test with the motor out of the vehicle, reason for the test was to see if I needed to remove the head and do rings etc while its out. I'm in the process of respraying the vehicle and tidying up a few things. Story behind it all is I've just purchased the skyline and it was running when I got it, never drove it on the street though as I wanted to pull it down and do it all up again before registering it. the gentleman I purchased it from told me the motor has a forged bottom end and has a decent tune through it but I was going to pull the sump off anyway to see if it is a forged bottom end. that's why I thought id do a compression test beforehand.
    • Man, I'm kind of amazed that the price of the turbo has not changed in 7 years. Everything else is inflating beyond reason, but not this? Good on Tao / hypergear I guess? Anyways, good luck with the sale!
    • I'm selling my brand new, in the box, never used Hypergear ATR45 - and I had some additions I paid for a few yrs back when I purchased it. Never ended up having the rest of the money to add all the mods at once, so I just ended up slowly selling each part. I originally had it internally gated, with the dump pipe, however I found it was incompatible with what I was going to use it for, so I contacted (I think Ken) from Hypergear, and he and I messaged back and forth & he got me to ship the turbo back, where they modified it & made it externally gated, and gave me the 5 bolt dump pipe attachment for custom welding. (Photos below) This turbo like I said has never touched the inside of an engine bay, it's completely brand new, never used, been sitting in the same box it arrived in, covered in plastic & all. Below are the photos of it: And while the guys at Hypergear were making it in-shop, they sent me some photos of the process: I'm looking at selling this just because I'm in need of the money right now, and don't have plans on modifying the 34 anytime soon - and from reviews & peformance sheets, this turbo had amazing results back when I was researching. The turbo was purchased in 2018 for $1.9k, with the mods I got added on. Looking at the website now, for the same turbo they sell (ATR45SAT), with the current addons it adds up to $1830 for the turbo Current addons included: - Bolted dump adaptor - Ball bearing CHRA - Braided oil feeding line So I'm looking to possibly sell it for around $1800, with shipping included in that 1.8k, It cost me around $120 to ship - so yeah thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone was interested in purchasing. Cheers!
