I took the car into Dickson today for Vehicle Inspection.

I failed on

1. Engine Oil Leak (Slightly leaky Oil Pressure Sender - $260??? meh i'll pay it)

2. Window Tint (16%, limit is 35% - bugger)

3. Non Matching Rims/Tyres

So what do people think.

I have 18x8.5's on the front, and 18x9.5's on the rear. They are nice wheels and the tread on the tyres is still good (~60-70%).

The guy said i need to get stock ones on, or get the car engineered, or prove that it was an option (and provide the necessary documentation).

How much is it likely to cost for engineering? will i need to do anything else? Is it going to cause me more problems?

Also, who can recommend a place for tinting - i need it done in the next week or so, Mac's in Queanbeyan is full till 28th sept.

Thanks in Advance guys.

I personally wouldnt pay for engineers for just that.

Tint is a bitch you'll have to get rid of it, no other way around it, wheels swap with stockies, and get under with a rag around the corner and wipe off the oil before you go in :O

I just got quoted ~350-400 to get a certificate for the wheels.

Considering there is probably ~$3000 in wheels and tyres, and i'm likely to move states again in 6-12 months i'll probably just do that. He said to me that it would be no problem (initially he said those sizes should be an option - thus fine, but the placard didn't agree and well Inspector Kevin wasn't happy).

I'll look into possibly getting other things done to it engineered as well at the same time - depending on cost.

I'd rather have the vehicle 110% legal, you know in case of an accident.

I've decided (after words with my old man and the insurance company) to get a certificate.

Mostly due to the fact that once an engineer has sworn by it, no-one can touch you.

Anything else i should get engineered on the car at the same time?

Current mods are

FMIC

PowerFC (if i can get this engineered i would be so happy)

AVCR2 Boost Controller

Bosch Fuel Pump

Coils

the wheels will be iffy, as hte R33 only came with 15" factory, and seeing as you can only go 1 inch larger and 1 wider, i don't think you can get 18" engineered, only 17". as for the other stuff i'd just not tell them, they won't see things like computer or boost controller if you don't have it stuck on your dash.

i understand where you are coming from, not going to say my weidth on here but you need to have the same rim the same wiedth rims to pass rego. GO the stockies or Call John Willson for a report. Shouldnt cost you more then 400 for the whole car.

bah term you are a stagea n00b :3some: 33 gts-t's came out with 16' stock

maybe the series 2 did, but i'm pretty sure my skyline had 15" on the tyre placard. it had 17" when i bought it so i wouldn't know. leave my stagea out of this debate!

i'm too tired to prove anything, maybe later

Ah,a dollar for every time a girl has said that to me...LOL!

ANYTHING,providing it's done RIGHT,can be engineered.20's on a Gemini are legal, providing the load rating, overall width(and if not, speedo correction),wheel track, offset to body clearance, plus a number of other things, are dealt with. Twin turbo 1UZ 4 lite V8 in a Celica? Done. 9 litre turbo'd Chev' in a LH 'Rana? Road legal. One just has to take the nessesary engineering steps(not the report-actually make it roadworthy before said piece of paper...),and 'voila!' All good! Doesn't stop you from being harrased if you drive a/ like a d**kwad or b/ drive an obviously modified vheicle. but,if you have the paperwork to prove it,AND it's still actually legal, and not changed since the cert' was issued, bring it on! Good luck, nsanity:it'll all work out!

The car is now very very engineered.

Could you give a bit more info on what you went through?

I'm wondering what was checked, what tests you had to have done (if any) etc

And which engineer you went through?

John Wilson, AKZ Engineering.

Non-standard Rims/Tyres, 18x8.5, 18x9.5 rears

Non-standard Fuel Delivery System (Fuel Pump etc)

Non-Standard Exhaust

Electronic Boost controller

FMIC

Non-standard Coilovers

Body Kit

Strut Brace

Non-standard steering wheel

He measured the track of the vehicle, applied stickers, measured suspension height/travel, inspected parts, installation, checked id numbers, discussed future mods and how annoying Dickson pits is.

He basically went for a lot more, for piece of mind - basically if i get pulled over, i hand them the certificate, and everything is covered.

Took about an hour.

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day
    • While I was waiting for the new parts to come in for the charge pipe and radiator I decided to do some turbo modification. The drive pressure (exhaust backpressure) was a lot higher that I thought it should be. For 32lbs of boost drive was 55lbs. The turbine housing is a 1.10AR and my turbo builder has suggested to go to a 1.25AR. To test if a larger AR would do anything to reduce drive pressure AND not spend any money I decided to hog out the divider in my current housing. I removed it from the inlet and the whole way through the housing.  After reassembly and testing it doesn't look like this modification did anything for reducing drive pressure or requiring more fuel (making more power). Oh well, it was worth a shot. We'll get some data at the track if it makes it past the 60ft. I also machined a $7 shift knob off Amazon to fit my Stillway shifter since I didn't like the Stillway shift knob. Next on the list was the radiator replacement and fabrication of a new intercooler tube that had no silicon coupler. No pictures of this - I was short on time each night after work to get this done and didn't stop to take pictures.  Next was to get the clutch disks out and replaced. Previously when installing the dogbox I had ordered a set of the same sintered iron disks I had been running because I switched to the 26-spline input shaft. I thought it was odd that they didn't have any markings or brand name on them like all my old disks had but installed them anyway. At the track I could not get the clutch to lock up using my normal strategies. After two track nights I reached out to the clutch manufacturer and ask their thoughts. They said they had to switch the material out because they were having trouble getting the original material and that this new material would not take to being slipped very well.  So out with the first set of 26-spline disks and in with the correct material 26-spline disks. While I had the trans out I added an inspection/service hole. I've wanted one of these for a while. Now I can have a look at things and change the front cover shimming when needed (clutch wear). I hustled and got the clutch change done in a few hours on a Saturday. Hopped in the car and drove home. On the way home I did a 1-3 pull. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd the core plug in the back of the cylinder head popped out and dumped all the coolant. Thankfully I was only 30 seconds from home and coasted it there. Datalog showed nothing unusual and 2.5psi of coolant pressure. That plug has been in there since 1992 but I guess it worked its way out. Pulled the trans AGAIN and replaced the plug, JB welded it in, and made a brace. Also deleted the head drain I had added in during the bearing issue fiasco.  I am currently changing my boost control plumbing to make it cleaner. After that is done I'll make another attempt at getting past the 60.
    • Are you 100% sure this isn't tune related?
    • 140-150 across the board. At this point hoping the grounding harness fixes it. My grounds are all tied to the chassis and none to the battery. For SR and KA that’s never been a problem for me but had a few other guys here and Reddit who told me RB really like a very solid ground setup tied to the battery so going to try that next, I’m stumped if that doesn’t do it. Never had a car have spark and fuel and not fire off before. Only thing I can think is the spark is intermittent/weak because of grounds nothing else really makes sense at this point
    • I am having close to the same issue. Can you help me with what wire you grounded to get your pump to trigger?
