Hey guys, looking to get an alarm for the latest R32... I'm partial to DEI products as I've had good experiences with them on previous cars, like their expandability, support network and features.

As such, I have access to the 791XV at wholesale price through a mate who works at DEI, but what "alarmed" me was the fact that you could buy the same alarm form the US and have it shipped here for about 2/3rds the price of the one sold here.

Now my mate from DEI has filled me in on the differences in parts, the fact that they are B Grade alarms made for distribution in parts of the world like Mexico etc, and if there are any faults that DEI australia will not touch them even if you pay them to fix it.

What I want to know is if anyone in Australia has actually ordered one of these overseas units, and if they've had any issues with them, reliability etc. More than keen to find out if it is worth saving a couple of hundred bucks on a product of the same specifications as the locally sold model.

The whole thing sounds very similar days back when owning an import was frowned on because "they're cars made for another country, and they don't have warranties in Australia, no support, no one will ever fix em etc."... now working for a car importer and helping run a forum for imports I know how bollocks that statement turned out to be.

I'll leave this alone. 480V is a better item though.

will look at the 480V. shopping around atm. I have a shortlist of what I need in an alarm. And as I said I would prefer a DEI alarm as i've got some mates who are DEI technicians and salespeople.

Just trying to sus out if this import unit is as good as the local one.

also the local item comes with a battery backup siren the import one doesn't. the siren supplied is tiny.

AFAIK almost all DEI products use the same interface and control module, so a battery backup siren from a local "brain" unit will work with the import one right?

You getting one for insurance purposes Shan?

Not particularly, as my insurance company just needs a single point immobiliser and don't even require black wiring... which was odd, but I got them to write it on the contract, just so there was no confusion on the matter when it came time to claim.

In any case, after talking to my mates who work for DEI a bit more, after all the name calling and threats of not coming to anything I invite em to if I bought the import unit, I'll probably end up with a locally sold DEI ;)

ATM I've been recommended a 460XV (blackwired) or 560XV (regular) from Viper, or a Hornet 563T...

Need remote start, plus maybe windows up/down for ventilating the car before getting in, and I don't need 2 way communication... might get GPS/GSM later down the track as an add on module (I've been told these ones are compatible). Need it to work with the turbo timer (or have one inbuilt) and possibly have some aux outputs for further addon modules in the future. Oh and I like simple remotes that don't get pressed while in your jeans.... not ones that you can play tetris on. Simple arm, disarm, windows up/down, remote start is all I need on my alarm.

want some part numbers?

ok in sequence:

460V

551T

530T

GiSMo

and if you need more than 2 o/p

450R (that nets 6!)

remotes on 460v will do nicely.

if you want I can gt htem or you can talk to DEI in mlb (who I think you are taking to anyway.)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey mate,

I brought a 791XV from the US almost a year ago and its been great. Although the boys from autobahn are all negative cause they are losing buisness. i paid $300 on ebay for it, where as the ones autobahn sell are about $999. when i did have it install by autobahn they screwed me around, and f**k*d up the central locking. I looked into it my self and fixed it.

Remote start is awsome, (as long as you dont leave your car in gear!), turbo timer workes great in it, aswll as all the other features. Ive had it for a yr and had no problems, but doesnt mean it might stuff up in 2 weeks time. i couldnt justify spending over a thousand dollars, when i could get the same thing for $300.

well in the end I actually ended up getting the US 791XV off ebay. Ironically one of the tech's for DEI Oz installed it for me... hehe...

we found that the Bitwriter for the Aussie ECU's don't work with the US unit... so basically had to get a different EEPROM for the Bitwriter so it could communicate with the unit, other than that it works identically to the Aussie one.

So far it works real well. Took out the turbo timer and now use the alarm as one... hardly ever need it as I don't drive it in anger shortly before I have to stop the car. Remote start works great... had to get a slave actuator for the driver door on the R32, that was the only issue as far as installation was concerned. It dosen't come with a battery backup siren, so had to get one as well.

My only complaints are that the remote is a chunky mofo, esp cos it houses a AAA battery. Apparently the first version of this alarm drained the batteries real quick, but the current ones are more efficient. Also the alarm comes with only one remote, but my mates are hookin me up with a non LCD (ie 1way) secondary remote... just in case I happen to lock my 2way one in the car :(

If it f**ks up, then I'll just buy another alarm. At AUD$250 delivered its an experiment I'm willing to try out. As for coloured harness wiring etc, the only reason the alarm's there is to act as a deterrant. I also have a kill switch and a secondary immobiliser which we custom wired in, so its not gonna get stolen in a hurry just by messing with the alarm unit.

What my mates were tellin me was that most of the times the alarms fail due to bad installations... if they're done properly then they shouldn't fail in the next couple of years, and I don't really plan to have my car or my alarm any longer than that :(

Hey, was browsing through and noticed this post. What makes the DEI stuff in the US different then DEI Aus? I know here in the US we have installed many DEI units here and cant really say that we run into problems with them. I have worked for stereo shops and have 2 friends who have there own shops as well. We only use DEI. I had them in several of my cars and never had any problems. I think like someone said it all about the installer. Dam, you guys pay alot for them over there. crazy.

I have been trying to find the wiring diagram for a 91 R32 GTR to put an alarm here. Just want to know if you guys know where I can find this. Just makes it easier to install instead of testing the wires. Cant seem to find this.

Thanks, Appreciate it.

funky,

your mates are correct. install is everything. that said I have a local bit writer and it will do all the units O/S and here.

elite. fire me a DIRECT email (in sig) and I'll help you.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
