I know i could have searched this, but i wouldnt get an answer to my question directly, more so i would have to read through pages and pages of unrelated information.

Anyway, I was wondering what pads people are using and what they think of them.

1. In terms of overall performance (stopping ability, fade, etc.)

2. In terms of brake dust

3. In terms of noise

Any help is much appreciated

Do not use Bendix Ultimates if:

U dont want ur brakepad to literally sh$t dust

U dont want to wake eveybody up in the street and the next street over, especially when slowing down from normal driving speed.

Brake fade is good BUT mine starts after a spirited drive, not fade but less bite, but it could be bad rubber.

BTW BNR32 with new RDA slotted rotors and Bendix Ultimates :)

I have an R34 and with Ultimates I have belted around the track lap after lap and never got any fade. They are dusty as hell though, prone to squealing and eat rotors for dinner. They wear out fairly quickly but for a performance oriented pad they are cheap. They do stop well though.

I just put some Ferodo DS2500's in last week and went to a track day on sunday. I'm told they last twice as long as Ultimates but yet to find that out. They give a firmer pedal. They stop well but have to push harder. They didn't fade. No noticeable dust after one track day. Only squealed when really hot.

Apparently my rotors were glowing red yesterday after 220 down to 170km/h stab and then 190 down to 70km/h stop straight after.

What is the difference between DS2500s and DS3000s? Anyone know? Price difference?

3000s are only meant for race use, apparently they will destroy your rotors when they are not hot.

2500s are fine for normal use as well as hard track use, and even come oem on some hi performance new cars.

I was using DS2500s for a while.

I didn't notice any degradation in performance when cold, and it took a fair amount of effort for me to fade them (even on my underbraked car). The only thing is they cover your rims in dust if you even look at your brake pedal. And they squeal when cold.

I'm on OEM pads since I did a brake upgrade and got pads with the calipers, but as soon as these pads die I'll be going back to the Ferodos. Dust or not, they work.

What is the difference between DS2500s and DS3000s?

The DS2500s are a "sprint" pad. They require almost no heat to come into operating temperature so they work from the get-go, and they can handle a reasonable amount of abuse. My mate's Formula Ford ran DS2500s in the NSW State Championship, where each race is around a dozen laps, or about 15 mins. No fade. They're not heavy cars, but the rims are tiny which means the brakes are tiny, and they work their brakes harder than most of us ever do.

The DS3000s are an "endurance" pad. They need more temperature to come on (they are noticably weak when cold), but they'll handle more heat and I believe last longer. If your race isn't won or lost based on your ability to stop in the first 2-3 corners because all the racers know there's plenty of time later, its a better pad.

I currently use Delphi(AP) Lockheed Type ZR(50-850degreesC) brake pads on my GTR32 and i run the sprint,clubman and national circuits on Queensland Raceway, they bite well and get up to temp fast, didn't experience brake fade with them. Initially when bedding in i had quite a bit of squeal with them, after 1 track session they don't squeal at all, i don't see too much brakedust with them too. The endless CC-X (50-700degreesC) pads are pretty good as well...

winmax the best pads ive had driven in or heard of(apart from da brembos in evo 8mr) fair bit of dust good for everyday driving. took car for a rap down the royal wid lots of hard braking didnt fail or fade once no noise and ive had them on car for bout a year wid ten thousand kms and only bout half done 0-500 operating temp good stopping power all the way through the temps but tink you can only get them through bel garage not the cheapest at $ 220 for the fronts and $180 for the backs im very happy wid em

Um, after doing ALOT of research, the way the Bendix Ultimates are made (And the whole Bendix range) they shouldn't be run with slotted rotors at all as the slots will just tear them apart.

That's interesting to hear. What would be the best pad to run with slotted rotors then?

    • That's probably OK. That's a face to face compression joint between two surfaces with the clamping load provided by those bolts. So.... it's unlikely that the bolts will end up feeling that load in shear, unless the clamping surfaces are not large enough, bolts not got enough tension on them, etc etc to prevent the two faces from moving wrt each other. Which... I would hope the designers have considered, seeing as it's probably one of the most important things the upright has to do apart from resist collapsing in its own right. But yes, it would definitely be worth asking them what their safety factor on that part of the design was. I tend to think that the casting, being a casting, is not necessarily the strongest bit of material in the world. It's about an inch square, and when you think about the loads that are being put into it, you have to wonder what safety factor the Nissan boys (and every other OEM engineer who has designed all the millions of other uprights that look essentially the same) used to account for defective casting, aging, severe impacts on the wheel, etc etc. 
    • Those bolts would be orders of magnitude stronger that cast aluminium though.  And its mainly clamping force, not shear they are dealing with?
    • Except all that twisting force that is breaking a cast piece, appears to be going through 4 bolts in the picture Johnny posted of the BryPar one...
    • The smart approach is to use the gearbox loom from the manual car. Makes it a lot easier - just plugs into the switches on the box and plugs into the main loom up near the fusebox. Then you only need to deal with bypassing the inhibit switch. The other approach requires you to use the wiring diagram to identify those wires by colour and location, perhaps even indulging in a little multimeter action to trace them end to end to make sure, and then.... you will have the answers you need. The R34 wiring diagram is available on-line (no, I do not have a link to it myself - I would have to do a search if I wasn't able to go to the copy I have at home).
