I was looking at some oil and purchased Mobil 1 as I was getting problems with a slight tick first thing in the morning and when she was warm she would also tick on and off every now and again.

Anway Oil change did the trick no more tick BTW the turbo is on her way out and does blow a little more smoke when cold for the first two gear changes (second and third) then it goes away and never comes back until cold again, I've been told it is the oil seals seeping when the turbo starts to cool down?!?!

ANYWAY FOR THE OIL FILTER!!!

I went to Autobarn in Adelaide and the bloke there told me to buy the Purolator PureOne Oil Filter, Apparently it is a better oil filter than the Ryco or similiar.

I slapped in the oil and I get consitant oil pressure all the time now ?!?!?!?!? The guage used to fluctuate up and down and some times when on idle it would sit on around 1/8 which looks way to low.

Oil pressure now never sits that low and the tick is gone?!?!?!

I am wondering if the Ryco oil filters are what causes the fluctuation in oil pressure, I have run Mobil 1 before with a Ryco oil filter and had the same pressure fluctuation.

It could be just coincidential but it sure doesn't look like it.

Here's my Oil pressure now.

Idle - on the first line or on the 6 when cold.

Normal driving on the 4.

When driving hard havn't really noticed.

WWW Site.. Click on the PureOne title towards the top left of the screen. The Premium Plus oil filter is their std. oil filter.

Try the Oil filter and let me know.....

I've always used ryco and never have any complaints. Once I tried a genuine holden VL filter and found it was a bit more restrictive. Note that I kept using the same oil (mobil 1).

Sounds like your guage was playing games and could just fortune.

according to the manual oil pressure should be at 4kg cm2 @ 6000rpm

mine sits at about 1/2 or sometimes lower on a cold night at idle and i get pretty scared seeing it so low.... although it rises fairly quickly when you put the hammer down. im going to change oil and filter soon and have been advised toward a ryco or preferably genuine nissan and i use AGIB oil. could the change in the oil/filter combination change actual oil pressure that much? or are we relying too much on the std gauge.... cos i know low oil pressure=bad as can mean internal damage or dead oil pump which mean rebuild

Ok, I had problems with pressure and Mobil 1, i wont touch the stuff now. Always used ryco filters, no problems at all. Im using Conoco synthetic oil atm and it great. Also my factory oil pressure gauge consistently reads lower than what my aftermarket one does too, especially at idle and high rpms.

Hehe,

I always have used Ryco oil filter z145A, and also now use Castrol Synthetic R 5-30W.

Obvioulsy the stock gauge isnt very accurate in terms of fluctuation and instant readings, however at idle, when warm it reads 4. When i accelerate at WOT it usually gets to aprox. 6. Is this the same with everyone else?

mine, no matter what oil is in it, sits on about 2.5 at anything over 1250rpm. never goes higher than that.

have used 5-50, 10-50 & 5-40

at idle is usually about 1.5 but occasionally drops right down

will have to check it with an external gauge in case it is actually the pump!

This is a good rear if you have abit of time, pretty much on the topic about different filters and oil pressure. http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultima...ic;f=6;t=000513

Its from this site: (not aussie related)

Very good info and some nice test. Cheers Rob

i have the same problem as you... but like today i was driving down the road and i watched it go form just under the 2 mark upto about 3 than about 5 mins later frop back down again... when i start it in the morning it does just under the 4 than drops to just under the 2, than after about 15mins of driving it does down again.. than if i pull over and stop somewhere for about 1 min or 2 than start up it will be right for another 15 or 20 mins or so...

its got me stumped.... dodgy gauge i think

There's a thread some where about this issue.

Its two things it may be..

1. Dodgy oil pressure sender/guage

2. The bolts are coming loose in the oil pump causing it to loose pressure.

Strangely enough I had to stop using Mobil 1 5-50 I think it was as after giving it a hard run or driving in peak hour traffic for a long period of time my oil guage would show just above the 0 line.

I tried several different oils with similiar results.

I then came across a cheapish Penrite HPR10 which has a vis of 10w-50. That never plays up for some reason. Even after its had a hard time. It does start to loose a little bit of pressure if I start going over 7000km's without an oil change though.

Mines done 160,000km's.

I also found with the Mobil 1 and any 15w-x oil I get a ticking every single morning from the hydraulic followers I assume.

Not sure why but my car doesn't like Mobil 1.

right... my car has done 169,000km's and i have used about 3 or 4 different oils from 10w-40 to 25w-50... maybe the penrite oil has some sort of cleaning agent in it and unblocked something?? who knows

with the bolts on the oil pump, how hard is it to tighten them up again??

Mine stays at 4 when i first start it up. After it warms up though it drops to that first line under the 4. Also starts ticking at this point.... But then on accelerating it rises again to 4.

Is anything wrong?

I'm going to get the car serviced on saturday, so hopefully all this will be fixed.

When I rebuilt my engine recently I found that the counter-sunk screws ( not bolts ) on the inner surface of the pump were very lose. If these are the ones you're talking about it's a matter of pulling the oil pump off which is NOT an easy job !

In my opinion.......never trust the stock oil pressure gauges / senders in an import skyline ( especially the R32 ones ). I have a freshly rebuilt engine and it reads fine on start and while cold running. When it gets hot it still reads fine until idle at the lights and then it drops off to zero.

For the record I've been using Penzoil 5W-50 which seems OK but I get cold engine ticking most of the time no matter what oil I use. Also, I'm another who will not use Mobil 1.

Up until the last oil change i had always used Mobil 1. Speaking to a guy down here, im now trying an oil called OWS or something.

One thing i noticed when i had the rocker cover off my engine on the weekend, for an engine with 170,000kms on it, the valvegear looks to be in good nic, far better then i expected.

So of the 170,000 kms, 95,000kms by me using Mobil 1 and the engine has negligible blow by, even compression accross all cyliders etc etc... so the oil cant be that bad... i suppose as long as you change it regularly you cant go too far wrong

my r32 has a few k's on it, when i used to use fully synthetic oils my oil pressure would sit lower than 3 on the stock gauge........i've now changed to Penrite HPR 40 (the old pentrite turbo stuff) which is i think 30W-70 and i've never looked back. Oil pressure is now on or above 4 while driving.

Only one thing, it need a good warm up in winter.

We just had a hot day the other day 36 degrees at 4 pm and while drivin home i found that my oil pressure sat just off the 0 :D which is really freakin me out. So i changed the oil in the car. Put mobil 1 in it and and changed to a nissan ginuine filter now at idle it sits on the mark above the 0 so i gather 2. Its still concernin me. Any ideas. Not sure what oil was in it as i haven't changed the oil since i bought it. from a dealer.

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
