Wondering what people have to say about 17" tyres for Skylines ?? (for normal street use)

Which Brand ?

Which type/model ?

What profile ?

How Wide ?

What cost ?

How long they last (typically)

Where is the best (cheapest) place to buy ?

Cheers,

BF

i havnt got the 17's but ive got the 16's version..

the tire ive found to be the best bang for bux is the dunlop fm901, yes thye also come in 17's as ONARUN also has em.. i got my 16's for about 190bux.. so 17's shouldnt be all that more..

and i wont give u an idication on how long they last.. as my driving wont give a good indication in regards to tire ware:D

there awesome things.. and very well priced..

i have ultra radials

17"x9" 235 45's on all corners

$205 a tyre there really hardie as they still look brand new and i've done 60,000km on them only about 3% where to the tread depth.

the only problem they are really hard compound and are extremely slippery in the wet.

FM901's don't last long as they are made of a soft compound. they are very grippy so good for trackwork and excellent for road use. they like to bite the road and then let go all of a sudden. you don't get the screeching indication before they let go like other tyres. if you want something that will last you look for a harder compound than that of the 901's.

To contradict Porgie in the above post I would have to say that the Dunlop FM901's wear quite well.

I've got them in 235/45 17 and 255/40 17. Put them on the car in March for $1240 fitted and ballanced.

They are a bit noisy (road rumble), but never squeal and I was very happy with the communication and grip at Eastern Creek and Wakefield.

Apart from one of the rears de-laminating after about 400 km  (Dunlop replaced it without too much fuss at no charge) I am happy with them.

I'm running Yoko's a-spec. You can' buy them at normal tyre places as they aren't DOT approved. But hell they grip very well. I've got 255/40/17 all round on mine. Paid about 280 a piece at Eagle tyres in Granville. Considering I'm quite aggressive on the track, they seem to be doing the job very well.

Fatz has e-specs, and they look evil. I might try to source them next.

what's de-laminating?

my driving has seen them wear out quickly and the fact that they are a soft compound indicates a shorter life

Deliminating is when the rubber starts to pull away from the carcass.

Falken Ziex's on mine, on standard rims....Very happy with the grip, I can't wait till I get 17's thou......Might try some new rubber, whats Falkens high line tyre called ? GRB ? What are they like ?

Andrew

the carcass is a cavans type material, probably canvass which nthe rubber is attached to. I'm using my knowledge of kart tyres here...they don't have steel belts, i think the steel belt is either in the rubber or wound into the canvass....

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
