It maybe because ive almost held my licence for 3 years? The excess is high though at $1900 LOL

I know where your coming from dude about not driving a shitbox no more lol i know exactly what u mean!! but it al comes down to the $$ and if you rather waist it away, i know i would b kicking my self a few years time knowing i could have saved so much more money lol, but hey ya only live once so enjoy!! just dont risk anyone elses life

Mate, I know your situation - hard but true...anyways, do not buy a Skyline - buy something like a Holden Commodore or a Ford Falcon or something - just something to get around in... pay third-party only insurance, stay on it for a few years... 3 plus years then get your point back then buy a Skyline... you're still young - not the end of the world yet.

"boo hoo I'm on my P's and I want to buy an R34 GTR but I can't get insurance."

the rest of us drove slower cars when we were younger. added bonus, when (not if) you f**k up there's less chance of wrapping yourself around a tree.

Got a bit of a conclusion at the end should you want to skip my stupidness ;)

First, why all the VL bashing? Its the only decent Commodore anyway (RB30E :P). Besides, the term sh tbox should never be used. Sure, a Excel might not be a nice car, but if your on a clay pan in the middle of nowhere... who cares? :P

In my experiences with insurance, a change of car in the eyes of the insurer is much more minor than a change of driver. Your idea of having your mother insured for the Skyline and you for the Mondeo could work, but I don't think you would save a significant amount of money (I'm too lazy to look it up so I might be wrong :laughing-smiley-014: )

Now for my long winded story.

Got my red Ps in 2004 (no V8, turbo or performance restrictions, as far as I read the rules) and I got it in an '88 R31 Skyline GX Wagon. Drove it to and from school and probably nearly killed myself a couple of times while doing it, but I learned how to control a rear wheel drive car. Anyways, year after and its time to pay for insurance. No record good or bad, still 17 and I could only insure it with NRMA for around $1500, third party property. (car was previously written off by my dad, we kept the car and re-registered it, somehow most insurers don't like this...) Needless to say both my parents and I where fairly shocked at this, so we decided to insure it under dad's name with me as the yongest driver. Another year passes, same thing happens again but come this around when we phone NRMA they said I was not on the policy. Then to have it properly insured under my dad's and my name would save me a whopping $200 from the original $1500, big deal  . Thus, will not insure with them again. "Thankfully" the car did not pass rego due to some rust on the A pillar... To this day the car sits on the front lawn... :P

Then I got myself a V6 Magna, drove it for 2 months before my brother needed a car and I decided that it was too much of a luxury car, and I liked the "go-kart" feel of the R31. I bought myself a '91 Subaru Liberty GX, front wheel drive and almost all electric options. Insurance is easy, but it burns just as much fuel as my R31. Now I have enough cash for a tidy R33 GTS-t Series 2, but lack the balls to part with my money. :)

Anyways, before I write an epic novel here I would just like to recommend a car should you not get you Skyline would be a Gen 3 Subaru Liberty (2002 - 2003). (IMO) Looks good, goes well and hole their value reletivly well untill you sell it for your Skyline. Or if you still want an import a Mitsubishi FTO, although, insurance isn't going to be much cheaper than the Skyline...

Whatever you get just keep in mind that they all cars can break the speed limit, some just do it quicker than others ;)

Conclusion: Skyline insurance should be full comp, unless you earn roughly $20k a week or you get a really dodgey one and keep an open mind, look around for other cars that aren't "sh tboxes" (beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that stuff...)

I recommend full compehensive. Better being covered in cause of an accident.

My first car was a subaru wrx turbo when I just got my P's. I crashed the car in less then 2 weeks of owning it due to lack of driving experience. (When you are young, you think you can drive, WRONG)

Paid 3600 per year and 2600 excess in cause of accident... It may be a lot of money but if I wasn't covered for full compehensive I would of lost over 20000 dollars as the car was a totally write off.

You get the idea, best of luck and good on you for buying a non turbo and drive safely.

Buy a VL etc and learn to drive first. Save up the cash and put it into a better import in a few years when you can drive a turbo. You will have at least had a powerful-ish rearwheel drive to start off with.

hey man im 17, red Ps n ive got an r34 non turbo...no insurance as of yet..had it since dec 06

but i have another shitbox car that i always drive to work n shit..its done 400k hahaha 20 yearold car, so reliable.. a holden astra 1980s or someshit, its 1.8L..i prolly mite rack up my insurance record on that car tho...should b like 400 a year lol

i mainly use the skyline on weekends tho..sat n sun n thats it..but i should b getting around to getting full comp. under my name but hopefully i aint paying it

mate, im 23 nearly got my r33 in december last year, i know where your coming from hey. these ppl are idiots you are one of the people who got their red ps after the rule came in that states:

You cant drive V8s, Turbos, or high performance cars etc etc.

If you want a skyline i advise you get a non turbo i.e R33 gts not gts-t or an R34 like you said GT not GTT.

If people on this site ccould read then they would be more understanding of you. I understand what its like to passionately want a skyline! have done since i was 17 but i am one of the lucky ones who got their license b4 the high performance restrictions came in.

So you only live once mate, go and get the car of your dreams, i am very happy with my skyline but

BE PREPARED TO SPEND LOTS OF MONEY ON IT KEEPING IT ON THE ROAD.

Also Just Cars might not be the only place insuring non turbo cars.

If you dont want a non turbo then i advise you get a V6 or something.

Good luck

    • Hi...so a "development" here aswell The swap is "done" and car went "test drive" BUT it seems the clutch(maybe gearbox?) is a little bit sad? I bought this clutch kit https://justjap.com/products/xtreme-heavy-duty-organic-clutch-flywheel-kit-nissan-skyline-r31-r32-r33-push-type "Problem" is that the first gear is hard to put into and it seems that the clutch is not disengaged. It was not the problem with the old clutch...(or like sometime the first gear would not get as easy specialy when the fluid was cold) So? Can it be like...bad "install" or is the clutch wrong ((it should not have been) i done research to get the right one) Or is this "normal" with new clutch and needs to be break in?
    • @Duncan I can try  and thanks i did not thought about VIN and part numbers for 33/34. @GTSBoy yeah it looks like iam gonna do that
    • Forgot to include this but this is the mid section of my steering rack that looks like it has a thread/can be turned with that notch mentioned in the post:
    • Hey everyone, Wanted to pick some brains about this issue I'm having with rebuilding my 33 rack (PN is 49001-19U05). All of the tutorials/videos I've seen online are either R34 or S Chassis racks which seem to be pretty straightforward to disassemble but this process doesnt carry over to my rack. Few of the key differences that I've noted The pinion shaft on the other racks bolt on with 3 torx bolts: Whereas my rack bolts on with 2 allen head bolts: These changes are pretty inconsequential but the main difference is how you pull the actual rack out of the housing. The other skyline/s chassis racks can be taken out by tapping the rack out of the body with a socket and it just slides right out. I'm unable to do that with my rack because there's a hard stop at the end that doesn't let the seal/shaft be tapped out. Can also see a difference in the other end of the rack where mine has a notch that looks like you're able to use a big wrench to unthread 2 halves of the rack whereas the other racks are just kinda set in with a punch. My rack: Other racks: TLDR; Wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt this specific model of steering rack for the R33 and if there were any steps to getting it done easier or if I should just give this to a professional to get done. Sorry if this post is a bit messy, first one I've done.
    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
