Hey guys, for those who have tried and tested. Is there much to be gained over the original R32 GTR sway bars with say whiteline uprated bars? If there is i may choose to replace them in my rebuild.

If i do choose to swap to aftermarket are the GTR bars any good to the GTS-t owners out there? If they are feel free to make an offer.

Rear bar will fit GTS-t but front wont as the front subframes are different (you have a front diff). The aftermarket whiteline swaybars are solid and considerably stiffer because of it (24mm rear is 147% stiffer than stock)

You also get the added bonus of having adjustment in the swaybars to adjust to the handling balance you prefer.

And yes, replace both front and rear otherwise it will not be balanced. Only having front bar will make it understeery and only having rear bar will make it oversteery.

It is true that hollow bars are much more efficient at handling torsional loads and therefore you can save 5-10kg from them. But they are much more expensive as hollow spring steal is not cheap, the range of sizes is limited and it is harder to mandrel bend (more expensive machinery is needed)

id like more info to but why would you need to mandrel bend them anyway?

If not mandrel bent, the cross section across the bar is not uniform and therefore stiffer in some sections than others.

The better upgrade depends on what spring and shock rates you are running. GTR rear swaybar is indeed a good value for money upgrade, but it is no where near as stiff as the aftermarket whiteline ones available.

22mm swaybar is 74% stiffer and 24mm is 147% stiffer. With the Whiteline bars you also get the added bonus (if you choose so) of adjustability.

By my rough calculation a solid 25mm anti roll bar is less than twice as stiff as one with a 2.5mm wall thickness.

Or to put it another way a 30mm od bar with a 2.5mm wall will do the same job as a solid 25mm bar for less than half the weight.

cusco do them for 32 GTR. justinfox has the cusco ones. ARC do them too. I'm sure there are others.

Hollow stabiliser bars are horrendously expensive to make.

A few poeple have claimed to have aftermarket hollow stabilisr bars on their Skylines.

But when I check they are either solid bars or simply painted standard bars.

Not quite.

A 25mm solid bar is 191% stiffer than 25mm hollow with 2.5mm wall thickness, so almost 3 times as stiff

The 25mm solid bar is still 64% stiffer than 30mm hollow but the hollow is 23% of the weight. One way to have the same stiffness as a solid 25mm bar is to have 33mm OD with 3.2mm wall thickness. This bar will be 32% of the weight of the 25mm solid. There are endless combinations of OD and thickness that you can go through to make the same stiffness though.

All this is very interesting. So should i just stick with my hollow genuine items cuz they are lighter etc? Will the dampers/springs be ok as the only mod to inhibit body roll? It impresses me when i find out things like the hollow bars etc on the GTR are standard. It was a damn fine car for its day, not to mention now!

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.

AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree.     • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
