Hi guys

I bought a set of advan sa3r second hand 17"

My old nuts were too fat to fit inside the new wheels so i bought a heap of new ones.

The ones i bought seem to fit perfectly, but i have just taken the wheels off to spray them black and the front right wheel had 2 nuts that were so tight, even after using wd40 and a bit of oil to lube them up we could bearly remove them by jacking it back and forth until it finally came off very reluctantly. It wasn't like they were tight for a small part of the thread but from start until finish.

2 of the studs are partly stripped of their threads and need replacing as well as the 2 nuts.

I'm wondering how this could have happened so i can avoid it in future. im not a newbie to wheels and know not to overtighten or cross threads and what not else.

Btw, what are the stud sizes because i need to buy some more (and hopefully from a wrecker).

the two studs/nuts have been cross threaded.

shit happens.

this might have been caused by you putting them on wrong, or the threads on the studs/nuts not matching, or even being way over tightened.

just be careful next time.

when removing a wheel, i jack it up a tiny bit then crack/loosen the bolts while its on the ground (always doing opposites), then jack it up then undo it all the way.

when putting it back on, (again doing opposites) i tighten the bolts slightly to around 30% torque while the wheel is in the air, then drop the car and do them up all the way.

are you sure you used the correct pitch nuts? You said you used new nuts , were they all the same ? Nissans use 12x1.25 mm pitch, same as Subaru, others use 12x1.5 mm pitch.

You can buy the studs new from Nissan

i hand screw them in 90% of the way and only tighten the last bit by hand and i only tighten them enough to hold and check them the next day so its very unlikely i've overtightened them or crossthreaded them.

I do them in opposites from each other but i crack them on the floor then jack right up to unscrew and losen, that could do this?

The nuts are 12x1.25

cheers

Its very hard to strip them by overtighting them you brake the studs first.

Thats the way you should undo them, do them up. Maybe you had 2 different studs on? someone changed them to 12x1.5 mm before ?

Ye, unless you cross threaded em, possible wrong studs were in there?

Other than that... being a bit over zealous on the tightening wont cause it as above.

Sounds odd if your 100% you put em on correct and they came off good also

Hi,

Had a similar problem on my much modified RX2. I had installed longer studs with a different bolt PCD. The long and the short is that the taper where the nuts seated in the rim was different to the taper on the nuts. Therefore when tightening the nuts the tapered end was forced narrower causing that part of the nut to bind on the stud...check the tapers and compatability of the two tapers.

Regards,

Jeremy

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
