3 points, $169

EDIT: should clear this up...

its only 3 poits for a major defect, which is maily what they give now as to eliminate imports off Victorian roads. If you get a minor one, then they usually dont fine you or lose any points but as stated its really up to the officer as to how severe the fine is.

Not always - sometimes you can get a minor notice with no fine nor points loss... but you still need to fix the issue and present the car to VicRoads.

Not 100% on the law - but I believe this is mostly at the discretion of the officer.

Dave got a fine with his last (major) defect... i tried digging up the paperwork to see if the fine was as a result of the defect, or if it was in relation to a particular illegal modification, but I can't find it anywhere.

I told him to fight it because he was booked by an officer on a motorbike, who removed his helmet while he gave the car a going over.... i was under the impression that once they removed their helmet, they were considered to be "out of uniform", but he decided it was easier to just shut up and pay up. ;)

LOL thats pretty funny. I'm 200% certain that they are still able to give out fines and perform their officer duties without their helmet on. Had that gone to court i'm sure the officer and judge would've been laughing for a long tome.

I've never lost points for a defect but I have got the $169 fine about 3 times while getting defected, the fine was for driving an "Unsafe Vehicle". They can take 3 points for this I think but its up to the officers descretion to take the points or not.

I've also had major defects where i didn't get fined.

The law may have changed though recently.

Well... motorbike Police might be able to, but regular Police are improperly dressed without their hats

I just thought it might transfer across

thx guys

so its pritty much up to the officer and if he wants to be a prick or not

wats considered a minor defect offence? like couple mods? IE cooler and boost controller? or are all mods no matter how many considered a mojor defect?

Major defect is when they get you for 3 or more things.

If you want to find out what's defectable, go check out the legal info links in the sticky thread up the top of this section.

Provided the officer identifies himself then he can quesiton you , book you etc even if he is off duty and wearing his underwear on his head.

if that's the case, why would there be such a term as "off duty"?

Wouldn't that mean that they are "on duty" 24/7?

How would they be able to "book you"?

In order to do that, they would have to have access to the proper paperwork.

I understand that they may be considered a more viable witness in certain situations, but when it comes to an off duty Police officer, don't you and I have exactly the same amount of power that they do?

On TV, off duty policemen can kill hundreds of people - say they are all bad, and get off scott-free (and usually hook up with some strumpet ex-hooker with a heart of gold).

Troy wears his underpants on his head quite regularly, so I'd be inclined to believe him. Note the part about identifying themselves as an officer (and no doubt flashing the 'ol warrant badge around)? - I'm sure he'd be able to stay off duty, dropping pints and betting on the dish lickers if he kept his yam shut.

That said - I received a yellow sticker in the R. No fine, no loss of points. Just told to get my trumped up charge of the placcard not matching the load weighting on my tyres - fixed.

I actually defeated a "failure to obey an officer" or whatever.

because he wasnt in uniform

He didnt have

1) A hat

2) reflective vest while directing traffic

3) Shoulder lapels.

I went on the argument he looked like a hot and bothered bus driver.

And winner to me :(

The judge actually hammered him. He had been in the force for 20 years and should have known better.

Power to the people

It sounds like you've spent more time in court than me Ash ;)

While you're out looking for Decemberween gifts, might I suggest that you consider buying him a hat of some sort?

Underpants as headwear is SO last year. (and it doesn't really impress the ladies)

    • Oof. One of my mates has an R34 GT-R that he initially was a "I want to go twins for response and convenience" on his stock 2.6 with Kelford 272 cams, but his friends are pests and were always in his ear about their place being in the bin.   Eventually one of the 2860-5s decided to add it's own input and force his hand, so he conceded and went for a Pulsar 6262G ("G35 900") with T4 0.85 hotside.    Here's an overlay of the results, same cams, same stock bottom end, same boost, same fuel, just from a pretty tidy 2860-5 install to a Pulsar turbo on a 6boost maniifold on BP98.   Worth mentioning here, it may seem like a dead horse thing but the dyno plot doesn't tell the story of how much better it is to drive - transient response has completely changed the car, he used to have flat foot shifting to stop it having to wind up again on gear changes even at >7000rpm... now it builds boost faster than that even short shifting.   It's 100% transformed the car before you even consider how much better it holds on: Pulsar and Garrett aren't the same, but from our experience if you're just looking for a better drive and the ability to make the same or more power I think the divided G30 770 would probably be the smallest I'd go to.
    • Great work Duncan, any events local you will give it a test once all done?
    • Sweet, yeah hoping stock gears will hold up. May use the transbrake feature on hill climb starts so that will test it.
    • Yeah, the thread is only nearly 20 years old.
    • Been down in Tassie for 2 weeks (a cruise, not a race for once) but spent a little time on her when I got back. I worked out the injector settings in the PowerFC were not correct for nismo 555s, set those to 66% +10ms and added a little air at closed throttle, set the timing (approximately, because it has some weird non 15o cells around idle) and now she starts and idles properly. She purrs like a kitten (ignore the co2 alarm in the background, I did  ) 20250518_171052.mp4 Next step, off for run-in, tuning and alignment!
