Ok i think i have a hard thing to pull off here but im going to try. I'm almost 17 in march and thats when i can get my p's. I want to get a skyline, 180sx, soarer or something nice like that. Problem is insurance, money and my parents. I think i might be able to get money to get a R33 (hopefully) from a loan off my mum. But insurance is going to kill me. I want to at least get third party insurance and i would like to get full comprehensive insurance but its just too exspensive. Do any of you guys know of a good insurer besides justcars that is ideal for a person in my situation. Also i need to figure out what car would be best for me, i really want a turbo but i really havent got much skills in mechanics all i know how to do is change the oil and oil filter on a basic commodore.

Any suggestions on what car i should get and why would be helpful and also good insurers:). Thanks guys.

btw i live in QLD.. so the difference in laws and w/e.

If you cant afford the insurance, you cant afford the car mate. A turbo R33 is a fast car, and it gets sideways without too much effort. Please, buy a non turbo or a regular car until you can afford the insurance!

:) See thats the problem, if the new laws kick in, in july 07 p plates cant get v8's,superchargers or turbos until they are 25 i think, it may be younger but im pretty sure its 25. So i gotta get my dream car before july. Edited by Kodak

Sorry buddy to come across as an old man who tries to act all mighty telling you what to do here but DON'T get the car if you can't afford the insurance, period!

As much as you may think you are ready for a turbo car, at your age, I'm sorry to say, you're not... That's by no means a judgment of your character (ie, hoon) but believe me if you either by accident or deliberately get the ass end of one of these cars out, especially on boost, things can get messy VERY quickly.

This is why, if you must have a turbo performance car at this age, get comprehensive insurance, there would be nothing worse than you literally just pissing away $10k+ for nothing

Anyway, that's my 2c, take it or leave it

I agree with this 100%!!! Mate, there is a huge difference between being able to afford to buy a skyline and being able to afford to own a skyline.

If you cant afford insurance, 98 rom fuel, parts or quality oils and stuff approx every 5000kms for a car like this, DONT GET IT!!!! These cars have a strong following and will be popular for years to come, so you will be able to get one when you can afford/handle one of them. Dont start at the top mate, I'm pretty sure that the F1 race car drivers didnt start their racing careers in F1, they mostly start out on go-karts and stuff. If you get a normal car to start out with, and then step up to a Skyline you really will appreciate what you 've got all the more when you do get it. And, if your unfortunate enough to have some minor misshaps early in your driving career, you WILL be thankful that you only have to fork out for repairs to the cheap car rather than having a Skyline repair bill.

If your only just getting your "P" plates that prob means that your young and dont have the greatest income in the world, and not that much driving experience under your belt to control one of these cars properly. Prob the two worst things that a Skyline owner can have is a lack of driving experience and lack of money. You must have at least half a brain because you had enough sence to ask this question to right people to start with here on SAU. Do yourself a favour mate and get another car first to cut your teeth on, make sure it is rear wheel drive that way at least you are getting the right experience rather than eventually getting out of a front wheel drive car to a rear wheel drive Skyline.

But, if you insist. Try "Torque Car Insurance" or "Vigil Car Insurance" they are without a doubt the best that i have come across. My Skyline is with TORQUE and my wifes Skyline is with VIGIL, both good. I got my licence as soon as I could mate and I'm now 34. I've driven trucks, cars, forklifts and all sorts of stuff. I bought my skyline 2 years ago and I still have all the respect in the world for it, as do alot of my friends who own Skylines aswell. In wet or dry conditions these cars demand respect because the minute that you dont respect them, you'll quickly find yourself either be out of pocket for repairs or a leading story on the six o'clock news.

PS. Sorry for the long winded post that tells you what you prob didnt want to hear but all the best mate with whatever you decide. :)

Actually DJ Brave that post was helpful. The reason i posted in the firstplace here was to find what negative feed back id get and so far its good because its not stupid stuff like because your a male or anything. I do have a decent income and it gets better each year ( apprenticeship). I also have a rwd car that my dad got me to learn in when i first got my learners a Holden Commodore lol. And ever since i was a lil pecker i drove go karts:). But yeah im going to try and get something half decent for when i get my p's. Any suggestions on a different car that is nice but would be good for me.

yeah dude, just keep saving up for another few years and it will pay off

dont worry about skylines at ur age. insurance is rediculous even for someone older than u. i dont believe in paying so much insurance that by 2-3 yrs time you could have bought the same car lol

hey im only 23 and i just bought my first skyline... drove a 1.8l pulsar for 6 years before that

.....ever since i was a lil pecker i drove go karts:).

Driving a go-kart in a controlled environment is a tad different to driving a "sports car" on the road.

If you think for an instant that any go-karting experience is going to help you out on the road, you're kidding yourself.

Stick with the Paseo, get the insurance under your name, get some driving experience under your belt, and get your insurance rating up.

Save some money, test drive a bunch of cars to find what suits you best, and THEN go buy your "dream car".

.......or you cold just run out and get a personal loan, buy a Skyline, write it off, then be stuck having to pay off a car that you no longer have.

I agree with everyone else that has posted and said dont get a r33 gts25t, if you really really have to have a skyline start with the most basic and cheapest model, try and find a r32 gts in resonable condition.

When i was 15 i bought my 1st skyline ,a r32 gts auto (rb20de) it was a great car to learn to drive in (even tho it was auto) it was very reliable, looked good, wasnt fast at all but it got the job done, the only parts i ever replaced on that was the middle air vent, it was a good looking and reliable 1st car.

When i was about 16 i sold the gts and bought a 1989 gtst auto (rb20det) for the same price that i got the gts for but it was in much better condition, for its age it was pretty mint and had only done 125xxxkms which is stuff all for a 89 model, that was a great 2nd car. It wasnt very quick when it was standard but once you get the exhaust done they go pretty well, they can be very dangerous in the wet if you dont how to control the car once it loses traction, so i wouldnt recomend that as a 1st car either.

I sold the gtst about a half a year ago and bought a manual 1998 r33 gts25t (I am now 18), it is a awsome car and once again will it will bite you in the ass very badly in the wet if you dont know what your doing. It is resonable cheap to run, gets anywhere from 450-500kms to a full tank depending on how you drive it, and so far has been very reliable.

So what im trying to say is start at the bottom and work your way up,dont buy the fastest car you can buy if you have little to no driving experience in a powerfull RWD, and if you really need a skyline for your 1st car get a r32 gts :)

I again would have to agree with what basically EVERYONE here has said mate, there is no conflicting arguments, which really is telling you something.

Firstly $3k insurance is a massive amount of money and if you have the money to buy a s2 R33 with that type of insurance money in 2-3 years time you'll have enough to buy yourself a R33 GTR or R34 GTT and most likely find the insurance will be cheaper.

These cars really are powerful machines and in the wet they are flate out dangerous even if you are being careful.

At 16 years old i just really dont think you should be purchasing a GTS-t without the proper experience. a GTS is definatly a better idea, they still look the same, they just dont have the added power that really is the main point most people are trying to make here.

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
    • Oh and some up-and-comings; New rear drivers wheel bearing. I'll do that this weekend while the diff is out. The car is already up and the d/c axles and missing exhaust will help with space. This is the last bearing for me to do and I've been dragging my feet on it. I also have some new EBC blue stuff pads for the car and some new brake fluid. I haven't ever flushed the fluid in this car and looking forward to it. I have 600 degree fluid to put in. Not exactly "race fluid" but better than the typical stuff I have been using.
    • A proper clutch/plate type mechanical diff with quite a lot of pre-load and high locking % is better for drifting. Much more consistent in its behaviour. A helical can be annoyingly vague and inconsistent in how it responds under the sorts of abuse found in drifting.
    • Some updates here. I pulled the entire interior out, minus some trim to respray the seats with Colourlock dye. It turned out really nice though I accidentally let the dog in the car after and she scratched up the front seat.  This is what it looked like before, the colour was just washing out everywhere but thankfully the leather was in good nic. Then after the respray   And after the bloody dog jumped in The headliner is out waiting to be retrimmed, but it will stay out now until Nov - see why below. I replaced the stereo/headunit with a period-styled Android headunit. I have no after pics, but I'll get some. This is because of the missing pixels. I tried to fix this twice with replacement ribbon cables but couldn't. Also the bluetooth interface I'd bought for this was crap. Then there's the rusty roof. Pics and info in this other thread. I have decided to get this repaired professionally, but I'll update that thread. This is why the headliner will stay out for now. I'll be getting the roof and bonnet resprayed at the same time the rust is fixed. I also had an interesting issue with my drivers door lock.  For a small period I was having issues getting any 12v power to the car - I mean *any*. It would have no dash lights, nothing. It happened while I was at the shops and I couldn't get in the car. So, we had 2 problems. The most pressing here is that I was locked out. I have only a single physical key hole on the car, the drivers door and no amount of turning would unlock the car. Surely it doesn't need power for this? The second issue is why am I losing all power periodically, The battery isn't dead, its almost like the battery isn't even there. Two issues that were surprisingly easy to fix. You fellow BMW over-engineering lovers will appreciate this. The lock in the door has 5 states; mechanical lock, electric lock, neutral, electric unlock, mechanical unlock achieved at -90 degrees, -45 degrees, 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. Although, the unlock is towards the front of the car, so opposite for LHD countries. Sticking the key in and turning 45 left or right is what is used 99% of the time. It activates the central locking etc. 90 degrees is for dead battery access and, obvs, only un/locks the one door. But because the mechanical lock is never used and is 27 years old, it seizes up. I was totally unable to turn the key far enough to get to the mechanical unlock (At the time of locking myself out, I didn't even know this was a thing). I eventually did it with some vicegrips and teflon spray.  I made a quick vid for other E39 peeps.   The battery issue is totally new to me also - It wasn't making sufficient contact between the post and the terminal. The terminal was bolted on tight, but the car wouldn't have power. After checking the battery with my multimeter I accidentally contacted the terminal and the battery post and the car got power. The battery was only a few years old and in good condition. I cleaned the post and the terminal with a wire brush, bolted it back on tight and never had the issue again. I'm still surprised that despite having solid contact it didn't work. Also, the car was getting Warragamba sized pools of water in the back when it rained. My initial concern was another rust problem. But when I went out on Weds while it was raining and while I had no headliner in I could see a steady stream of water coming through the roof mounted aerial. As this aerial is for the (now removed) car phone I pulled it out and whacked a blanking grommet in the hole. It seems fine now. I'm thinking I might get the hole permanently filled when the rust is fixed. Moving forward and things in progress; The tailgate needs some attention. I have taken all the trim off to clean it all and address some small rust spots. I have partially done all of this but I'll finish it up hopefully this weekend. As all the trim are now entirely devoid of trim clips I have bought a heap of strong velcro and I'm hoping it does a good enough job as any of this trim in good condition is super expensive and usually in Europe as we dont have many of the wagons here. Suspension and brakes!!! This is exciting. In the front; New control arms New sway bar links New lower Eibach springs (the only modification I'm planning on this car) M Sport shocks (these came with the car and will replace the longer shocks in the car) New top mounts Used 540i calipers (stock brakes suck!) New 540i disks and pads (22x296 mm for 528 and 30x334 mm for 540i) New front wheel bearings (thank all that is holy for bolt on bearings!) Annnnd in the back; New control arms New sway bar links Adjustable air suspension arms (fool the car into what the current height is so the self levelling suspension can match the new front ride height) New ball joints I'll also be doing a brake fluid flush while I'm in there. I'm planning on switching the car over to the 16's that came with it so I can clean up and respray the M Sport 17's. They've lost a lot of colour over the years and have some gutter rash. None of this will start until the E90 is back.
    • You mean you will regret it for drifting duties? I don't quite follow.
