3. VG30DET T3 BB Turbo

This turbo was taken from a low km VG30DET front cut I purchased. The cut had 40,000 km's (digital dash) and the turbo is really clean.

Not questioning the seller in any way I just want to confirm if this is the early or late type?

If it's ball bearing I'm led to believe it's early leopard or cima.. what car is it out of?

I don't know how to tell from the picture - is it water cooled?

Could anyone that knows please have a look and let me know?

Thanks Slide.

I understand the VG30et or VG30det is the turbo I want. And even then some of them need rotation to fit a rb30 with standardish turbo manifold.

I'd like to ask lastly to confirm it's not one of those from the VG30DETT ?

Cheers

vg30et type is more-or-less the same as RB30ET turbo and is non-BB + water-cooled. What is shown is a VG30DET turbo BB, water cooled as already stated, most likely from a CIMA. It's definately not a VG30DETT turbo, which is a much smaller T25 type. I believe the housing has to be rotated.

just for the record, you will have to rotate it.

I recently put one on an rb25 auto my girlfriends car and all I done was undo a few bolts and put it next to the stock turbo and lined them both up then tightened the bolts again.

It is very very easy to rotate a turbo it is not difficult, especially if you have a stock turbo off your car. Its a straight swap on procedure and this turbo is an awesum upgrade.

Cheers Daniel...

someonestolecc,

DONT DO IT!!

Spend the $400 or so on an Rb25 turbo. MUCH MUCH better.

The VG30DET turbo in the picture is nothing more than an R32 RB20DET turbo with the slightly larger compressor cover and R34 OP6 turbine housing.

The turbo is designed to create a nice wide power band on a 3ltr. On a smaller motor it spools slowly *feels lazy* and when it does hit she really doesn't come on hard, it feels like a big linear boaring power curve with bugger all mid range. In other words its not really a fun turbo. On the 3ltr its 'ok' but nothing spectacular. The VLT stock turbo is 'feels' better and makes more power easier in my opinion.

I've currently got a VG30DET turbo on my rb30det, its ok but made stuff all power over the stock rb20det turbo, all its boost is in by ~2200rpm and it makes its peak power around 5000rpm and continues to pull well until 5800rpm.

Grab an R33 turbo or cheap slide highflow for a few hundred more, suits an rb30sohc's lac of revs better.

That one is from a four cam single turbo 300ZX

There's no such thing as 300ZX with a 'quad cam single turbo' engine. The only quad cam engine used in the 300ZX series was the VG30 from the Z32 and that only came as a non-turbo (VG30DE) or twin-turbo (VG30DETT) from the Nissan factory.

The single turbo quad-cam VG30DET was only used in Nissan's luxo-barges (ie Leopard and Cima).

Thanks for identification and other informations everyone.

Joel - thanks for that I appreciate it. Actually I thought it'd be BETTER suited to the rb30e+t because I wasn't intending to run much boost. I must admit while I'm not going to be running huge boost I like it to come on early (response owns) and see if it'll take out some of the lethargy of the rb30... I also do enjoy the "OMGTURBZ" feeling - without being too hectic by coming onto boost with no warning at 4k (that would suck) :)

So you say go the rb25 one? Will I get more lower/mid from that? Street and drift will be the application. Will I need this elbow I keep hearing about?

I'll just post up incase someone searches and they can benefit-

Hey buddy,

The downfall of the VG30DET turbo is its compressor. Its the same small crappy compressor wheel the RB20DET turbo uses. Yes its turbine a/r is nicely sized for the 3ltr but its compressor simply cannot supply the air required without having to really push some boost in to it.

The R34 runs the larger compressor that can idle away at 11-12psi yet still push the same amount of air the rb20/vg30 compressor can at 15psi.

I really wouldn't bother with the vg30det turbo. I run one on my rb30det and its crap. I've seen the RB25det turbo run on a mates rb30det and its far better suited.

With these 2 small turbo's power still peaks exactly where you SOHC would want it. 5200-5500rpmish.

Being on an RB30 I don't know if you would need the elbow.

However.. the RB25 elbow fits the VG30. The rb25 elbow is a 90degree bend. The VG30 is nothing more than just a straight piece that allows you to attach 2" rubber/silicon to. In your application the vg30 straight piece 'may' be more suitable.

I'm not sure. You would have to have a loook at how the turbo would sit.

Thank you sir

Does that mean you will be putting a rb25 compressor wheel into yours? :(

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
    • So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
