hi all i am having troubble trying to decide what turbo to put on my rb20.

im aiming for a little over 200rwkw so i know that rules out a stock rb25 item but the problem i am finding as i dont realy know what size turbo and which turbo to get.

first off would be a slide hiflow rb25 item. around $1000 new without exchange and will handle 230rwkw easy. but are they very responsive? where do they make full boost?

seccond: KKR turbos. im not realy sure what size one i would be after but the price is around $800 to $1000 depending on size. i havent heard any reports on these yet so id be keen to know if they are a very responsive turbo or not.

third: a HKS seccond hand 2025 2530 or somthing like that. i think they seem to go from $1300 upwards but they are getting old and being seccond hand maybe a bit dodgy so they may not have any advantage over the slide item.

forth: a gcg hiflow or a new garett but now getting a bit out of my price range?

or should i just get a standard rb25 item and deal with the 190 odd rwkw that i should get?

any help would be good. i know turbos a covered quite often but i havent seen any side by side comparisons for a rb20 yet.

thanks damo

New Garrett $1670 + Fittings $200

Injectors $680

Z32 AFM $250

Manifold $600 - $1K

Full 3" Exhaust $800+

Intercooler + Piping $600+

Fuel Pump $250

Remap + Tune $400+

roughly $5,500 - $6,000

Thats a rough guide to whats required from stock, and thats on the cheap

Here is a tried and tested method for 220 to 240rwkw.

Sliding performance RB25 hiflow for RB20 $900

Oil line fabricated $80

GTR injectors and resistor pack $320

GTR pump $100

Intercooler kit $345

Exhaust batmbl split dump $380 xforce catback $475

Metal cat 3" stainless cat $300

ECU remap $330

Z32 AFM $250

Possibly splitfires $600

hiflow panel filter $80

so you are looking at $4000 for the basics

you will have full boost of around 18psi by 4100rpm.

OR Damo you could do what i did.

Take one stock Rb20 strap a TD-06 to the side of it, FMIC, oil cooler and some boost and you have 200+rwkw :woot:

I dont have AM injectors (but i am running extra injectors but thats about to be gone) running a stock AFM, GTR fuel pump and at 14psi it was 205.3rwks :pirate:

The 25 turbs from Slide are good for what you want same with a 2530, as your aware becuase of the small capacity of the 20 and a pretty average head your not going to get something that capable of running 200+ without a little lag EG: Full boost about 4000-45000rpm but thats the down side really!!!

Do the manual conversion first old kid then look at more power from there ;)

My setup should be pulling 260+ rwkw from the specs of the mods I roughly listed.....I looked at a TD06, but it will run out of huff for my eventual desired power figures.....

with cams, cam gears, head porting and some more boost I hope to get close to 300rwkw on PULP.....

thanks for the input people. i am very aware now about what suporting mods to use but i have been very undecided about the turbo.

basicly i have a 2.5" split cat back. split dump and front (not fitted) areo speed cam gears(not fitted) hopefluy to bring lag down. GTR fmic (mounted but not plumbed still deciding on pipeing rute) pod (waiting for front mount so i can move side mount so i can biuld a nice air box and cold air induction) and a HKS ebc.

the plan is to put the manual in. have 50% of the stuff needed. putting a haltec on (because i have a cheap one and i can do it and tune it myself) gtr injectors. spitfires one day. and some blody turbo!!! (still undecided)

if i go a haltec. i have no airflow metre= no restriction= saves me at least $250 for a z32. i dont need a resistor pack for injectors= saves more money. and i can tune it time and time agan= saves me like $500 for my first remap then more every time i want it changed.

i realy just need to know turbo and turbo spec recomendations.

thanks damo

How much power do you have now?

What do you plan on doing with the car?

You have ruled out the 25 item but if its only a quick streeter you want then I reckon its hard to beat. If you must have that magical 200rwkw figure then a 2530 or equivalent is good also.

With the turbo I have (standard GTSR) if I run it with the solenoid off and straight off the spring it makes around 180rwkw. For a street car it is damn fast with that power.

The point is that 180rwkw to over 200rwkw is not a great step in power but a great step in what ancillaries are required and hence money.

Have you driven an RB20 with around 180kw?

Have you looked into a Garrett T3 super 60? I think those are good for around 300 hp, and cost about $650 USD (750-800 AUD?).

Plain old journal bearring, so it wouldnt spool as fast as a 2530... but you could buy like 2-3 of them for the price of the HKS unit.

Hi Mate

My car was dyno tuned 2 nights ago and made 199.5rwkw

Here is my list of mods:

FMIC - $400

R32 GTR Fuel Pump - $300

Pod filter relocated to inner guard - (bit of DIY and $50 for various crap)

3 inch high flow exhaust with split front/dump pipe $1100

STOCK s1 rb25 turbo - $300

Remapped standard ECU - $200

El Cheapo boost controller - $50

$2400 = 199.5rwkw

Personally i think for a street driven car a 200rwkw is more than enough, i cant get traction in 1st sec and third gear i love it! But the quest for more power never ends.

just drop a 25 in  more fun!

i have driven a r32 with an rb25 in it but at the end of the day it is still far far cheaper to stick with the rb20.

i think i have decided to just get a standard r33 turbo for the time being do everything elce around it then get a nice turbo later on. i think somthing with ball baring would be good and help spool time. if i decid there is enough cash left near the end of my spending than i think the slide item will be the goods.

thanks for you input

I'm gonna say just got the RB25 turbo too. It's all I've got on mine too except I only got 183rwkw (tuned a bit safer), but I've got 1bar by 3300rpm. That's pretty impressive for an RB20! You're gonna find it hard to get that sorta response out of the aftermarket turbos available

nice work... however i dare say the dyno might be reading a tad on the highside... as those RB25 turbos dont make quite near 200 rwkw..

also, the fact you break traction in 1st 2nd and 3rd doesnt mean you have shitloads of power.. just shit tyres, and majore camber issues.

my drift R32 has 210 rwkw, with a Slide Highflow, and has plenty of traction in 2nd and 3rd  1st is a waste of time in any turbo car haha

well ive got a rb25 turbo on my car with a few extras n i made 186.6 at the rears on BD4'S dyno its not bad power for a cheap upgrade. im sellin mine soon pm me if ur interested. its a s2 rb25 turbo so its in good nik

    • Car has been running great, I've put about 300km's of break in time on it. First thing that stands out with properly sealing rings is no more noticeable crankcase smell coming out of my catch can. This may seem insignificant, but the constant smell while driving around was infuriating. It's also nice to see my oil level remain stable. Two new issues have developed that I only noticed this weekend though. There's a very noticeable driveline vibration past 100kmh. I only noticed it now as I've been babying it under 100kmh in the backroads. This comes as no surprise as I'm running a one-piece shaft, and I paid zero attention to my driveshaft angle when I put everything back in. I also have a fair bit of voltage drop on hot starts. The starter audibly is forcing. No issues on cold start though. I must not have removed all the paint under my main block ground during assembly. I'll try and take care of both those issues this week once the kids are asleep.  I also received all the parts I was missing for my direct port setup. I will hopefully have pictures of that up soon. I'm hoping to get back on the dyno the week of June 30th as I'll be on vacation. I'm confident I should be able to make north of 500rwkw on pump gas and WMI. I'll go back again later this summer with E98, but I want to confirm my ethanol content sensor is working properly first. I've never seen it read anything but 11%. This makes sense for our 10% ethanol content pump gas here, but I would expect the occasional movement between fill ups.
    • 75% complete. Will now need to get a new axle with 5x114.3 hubs and then figure out how to customize some mudguards for it once the wheels are on.
    • Trailer prep is underway... Lined up the wheel to get a rough indication of how it would sit Then removed all the bits (as far as possible) and gave the frame a light sand and quick lick of paint   Then added some carpet
    • okay, so I figured this out, removed needles and reinstalled after swapping the gauge face on my triple gauge for my ER34, all work and look good. I tried to do the same for the main cluster, but the main cluster gauge faces are dished, the replacement gauge face are flat, so due to the dish in the org face ,mounting backing plate (clear) and depth of the needle, the flat gauge face will not work. I notice that R34 gtr gauges are flat, appears to be different clear backing plate that aren't dished. are these available, or what have others done to install flat gauge faces?
    • Cheers mate. Seems some people get lucky others don't. It looks like the motor was detonating (to be expected if it was overboosting I suppose) as the pistons had a lot of detonation damage, and the bearings were stuffed. The bores were very scoured too, not sure if that's from the pistons or bits of ceramic turbo. By the by now. Have been trying to avoid the rabbit hole too much on the rebuild, and there's been a few hurdles along the way, but with any luck I'll have the car back soon™. Might even pop up a thread then.
