Hey i thought ill share my story with you guys. I went 2 autobarn on wednesday to purchase my IBC Gizzmo ebc and i thought just to save myself the trouble ill get it done. As i work night shift i thought ill drop it off when they open up. I have had some work done to the car at this autobarn before so i thought well they did a good job with the alarm and sub so they know what they are doing. The guy comes out with me and the usual ask me where i want it mounted i showed him and he said "no prob mate". I told him to take care of my baby and in his words he said "always do".

I went home to get some sleep before work. They phone me up to come pick up my car so all excited i go down to pick it up. Pick it up pay and off i go. I made sure the controller was adjusted all the way down. I take it for a drive and notice that the boost is hitting like 16psi before i crapped myself and lifted my foot because its a stock R33 s2 turbo and are rated 2 13psi from what i know. I get home and open the bonnet to c if a vacuum pipe might have come off. I grab the install/operating guide to check something. When i did this i realised that the have connected the solenoid up wrong. It was connected up as a external wastegate.

I phone them up and tell the umm you guys connected it up wrong. He says no worries bring it back and we'll fix it up. We will only b 10 minutes. One and a half hour later he comes back into the shop and says well they connected it up right now and its still boosting to 20.6psi. When he said that i almost had a heart attack. Then he goes and by the way i have a feul cut at 20.6psi. I almost slapped the s.o.b. He then tells me that the put the compresser on the wastegate through the solenoidand it only moves at 20psi.

I said to him well its a 6pound actuator, so either its connected up wrong again or you farked it up. The y bring the car round to the front and the manager comes out and has a look coz he was on the phone with the guy from Gizzmoi have another look at the manual and see that they connected it up wrong again.

The manager connects it up right this time and i drive home. And will you believe it the turbo was only boosting to 6psi like i said. So i thought it was fixed now and tried adjusting it. This didnt work. I turned the boost all the way up and still nothing. I get home steaming. Phone them up and said to them Listen mate its only boosting 6psi like i said, but now it doesnt want to adjust then i said to him you guys can sort this shit out tommorrow coz i have to got get some sleep coz ive been up all day trying to sort this shit out.

The next day i wake at 4 in the afternoon. A bit calmer now and decide to take another look at the boost control. I phone them up again and ask the manager whether they might have farked up the solenoid when they connected it up wrong. Its possible he says, come down and ill give you another one to try. I go down and grab one, come home and swap them around. And bam. It boosts and adjusts. I take the stuffed one bak and tell them it was the solenoid.

CONCLUSION DRAWN FROM THIS FEATURE OF EVENTS IS FROM NOW ON ILL DO IT MYSELF OR GET A SPECIALIST TO DO IT AND NOT ASSUME THAT A INSTALLER KNOWS WAT HES DOING!!!!!!!

Arhhh gess Franky...

Thats unlucky, not often you get a busted solinoid...

As for the guys at autobarn, I guess they are good at some stuff and not so good at others...

Boost controllers are a pretty easy install, but a busted solinoid would certainlly make one scratch their head...

Yeah keep that turbo on 13psi and she will last for years...

  • 1 month later...

WELL!!!! I was Bayside Performance Services yesterday to fit my new fuel pump. Pump works great fuel problem a thing of the past. But while on the dyno the bloody ebc wouldnt adjust. Could not get higher than 10psi. Manages 145rwkw at 10psi but i want more boost. So off i went to autobarn to tell them about my problem with the ebc, since i got it i have just have problems with it.

I asked for a refund for the ebc and got it, YAY!! Im taking that refund money plus a bit more and buying a GREDDY ebc. So im ripping the GIZZMO ebc out on saterday and taking it back and getting my GREDDY ebc and putting it in. Hopefully it will work. So i will update again on saterday and go for a power run next week on 13psi, 14.5psi and 16psi and see wat i make.

you do have an aftermarket dump pipe yes? if not, boost will almost certainly taper off at higher levels.

also, do yourself a favour and f**k the solenoid off altogether.. all it does is get in the way (unless of course this is one of those controllers that stepper the stock solenoid).

Connect your EBC direct between your intercooler piping and wastegate actuator.. the stock solenoid is only useful for a stock setup.

Far out... these guys hit 20psi with your standard turbo? Man they're car audio fitters, they should stick to that, i can't belive they're fitting coolers and all these little gizmo's n shit when they don't know.. for all we know they probably shorted out the solenoid causing it to shit itself.. cos they had a 16yr old working on it... not to mention they went for a bust in your car and hit 20psi... bastards!

So im ripping the GIZZMO ebc out on saterday and taking it back and getting my BLITZ ebc and putting it in. Hopefully it will work. So i will update again on saterday and go for a power run next week on 13psi, 14.5psi and 16psi and see wat i make.

Are sure the Gizzmo was setup right?

Most people don't like them because they simply dont read the manual, its setup is different to most EBC's.

Who tuned it at BPS? Clint?

LOL! +100000000 for that one

Its like this. I didnt know bout chris rogers at the time I purchased the bionic wheelchair and the insuro mob insisted i have an alarm. I dutifully rocked up to the barn and shelled out for an alarm and a timer and i am due to have it installed monday.

I met chris at the glen on tuesday night and he offered to try and steal the car. If he could he will then set it up so he cant. So even if it costs me a little more to make it right it will be worth it. Specially after reading bout so many purloined lines. :nyaanyaa:

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
