hmmm. i bet it was making a nice wir wir wir wir noise yes?

the corect tension is no slack. oh eay way to check is by flapping it like you do a rubberband. if it makes a audible twang. its to tight.

if it makes a thud its just right

ahh subjective.

I setup mine with the correct tension as per the engine manual. It had slight slack but was not loose. It had tension if that makes sense.

My initial feeling was... It should be slightly tighter. But its not supposed to be 'tight'.

Like me,try to move forward. If finances are ok then rip the head off and check damage. If pistons are ok then perhaps a port clean and even cams.Otherwise locate a standard head and bolt her back together.Do you feel you could rebuild it yourself if pistons are gone?

considering im unemployed im not ripping it apart unless i gotta, comp test it is as B|4cK32 said

gates high performance ones HRthirtyone?

Edited by Rednisr31

yea dude, the blue ones, that are meant to be 3x stronger etc.

if you dont have cash to fix it straight away, park it up , and take the head off..... Dont even bother with a compression test, you should have bent valves. it wont hurt to take it apart and suss the damage.

should, ya never know tho i might just be lucky

my mate was smashing limiter with his rb30e and snapped a timing belt and it didn't damage it internally

I think rb30e are considered not interference engines, meaning the valves can neve rhit the pistons.

In a rb25 howver i believe ther are a interference engine so yes the valves will smash the tops of pistons.

Hope fully im wrong.

Sorry to see that happen.

the following was taken from the service manual for r33 gts25t.

"6. Adjust timing belt tension.

(1) Turn the crankshaft clockwise twice with the tensioner pulley

installation bolt in loose position.

(2) Insert wrench to tensioner pulley hexagonal hole to fix the tensioner

pulley to tighten the installation bolts.

Tightening torque (N-m{kg-m}) 43-58 {4.4-5.9}

*The timing belt tension should be at correct tension"

Ouch thats nasty and making me freak out a little bit.

I had a Gates belt fitted a couple thousand kms ago and it whirrs very loudly. The belt cover is off and I dont think I could get 10mm play in it.

The mech that fitted it said it will loosen up after a thousand or so kays and that the whirring noise is perfectly normal. Will I have to do the whole belt replacement procedure i.e timing etc to loosen it or can I safely just loosen it off a little bit with it all in place?

I have never done it myself before hence I dont know how the tensioner operates.

to adjust the tensioner u need the bottom timing cover off which means u need the fan off and radiator out and harmonic balancer off as well, so pretty much the whole lot (and top timing cover but u say its already off). its not hard to do a timing belt and i cant see how people make it out to be a difficult job. i can get the car from running to belt off and new one on and runnning again in about an hour and a half or less. ive done mine about 20 times though when we been doin the valve shim clearances for the big cams i got.

oh and no the belt doesnt actually need to be removed only the tensioner loosened abit with belt in place.

just make sure the 3 dots line up and u will have no problems for anyone attempting the belt change themselves

rb30s are interference engines

    • Hi...so a "development" here aswell The swap is "done" and car went "test drive" BUT it seems the clutch(maybe gearbox?) is a little bit sad? I bought this clutch kit https://justjap.com/products/xtreme-heavy-duty-organic-clutch-flywheel-kit-nissan-skyline-r31-r32-r33-push-type "Problem" is that the first gear is hard to put into and it seems that the clutch is not disengaged. It was not the problem with the old clutch...(or like sometime the first gear would not get as easy specialy when the fluid was cold) So? Can it be like...bad "install" or is the clutch wrong ((it should not have been) i done research to get the right one) Or is this "normal" with new clutch and needs to be break in?
    • @Duncan I can try  and thanks i did not thought about VIN and part numbers for 33/34. @GTSBoy yeah it looks like iam gonna do that
    • Forgot to include this but this is the mid section of my steering rack that looks like it has a thread/can be turned with that notch mentioned in the post:
    • Hey everyone, Wanted to pick some brains about this issue I'm having with rebuilding my 33 rack (PN is 49001-19U05). All of the tutorials/videos I've seen online are either R34 or S Chassis racks which seem to be pretty straightforward to disassemble but this process doesnt carry over to my rack. Few of the key differences that I've noted The pinion shaft on the other racks bolt on with 3 torx bolts: Whereas my rack bolts on with 2 allen head bolts: These changes are pretty inconsequential but the main difference is how you pull the actual rack out of the housing. The other skyline/s chassis racks can be taken out by tapping the rack out of the body with a socket and it just slides right out. I'm unable to do that with my rack because there's a hard stop at the end that doesn't let the seal/shaft be tapped out. Can also see a difference in the other end of the rack where mine has a notch that looks like you're able to use a big wrench to unthread 2 halves of the rack whereas the other racks are just kinda set in with a punch. My rack: Other racks: TLDR; Wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt this specific model of steering rack for the R33 and if there were any steps to getting it done easier or if I should just give this to a professional to get done. Sorry if this post is a bit messy, first one I've done.
    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
