Who Has ASDL

I have netspace... and it works well for me with no reliability problems.

512kbps/128kbps - 7gig peak+7 gig offpeak (downloads only). That plan is $100/month.

If you want the 6gig flat (still just counts downloads) $70/month, plus $99 connection charge

i had my own modem from when ADSL first became available in the country... its a speedtouch home. I've been on Telstra and netspace, and i'd never ever go back to Telstra.

Yes, the $70 plan is still 512kbps... $239 for 12month contract covers the connection+USB modem....or $50 if you buy a modem separately.

Anyway mate, full details here: http://home.netspace.net.au/adsl/plans.php

Fastest i guess is 55k/sec.. Depends where or what i am downloading from...but gues i get above 40k/sec most times.

denham: you're an engineer.. do the maths! you're not going to get above 55k/sec .. 512kbps = 64,000k/sec + all associated packet overheads = about 56-58k/sec MAX in an ideal world. If you want faster, pay more for a 1.5mbps plan. Email you'll get faster than that because its text and it compresses it (except for movie and zip files, etc).

andy: its not heaps faster, just more reliable and you get more value for money to what Telstra offers. I'd definitely change to another provider if you have the chance. Telstra doesn't deserve any business due to their business practices IMHO. They've outsourced a lot of their IT, call centres and things overseas these days.. and prolly accounting soon :D

I've been both on TElstra ADSL, and Telstra Cable... and the best so far has been my current Netspace connection (which i've had for 12 months)

So ADSL then ???

I'm going to finally get net at home in the next 2 months... so i need to know.

$239 connection fee? i Spose it's worth it ??

I'm thinking of the base 512 plan looking at that.

As if i'm gonna D/L 6 gb!!!

I don't do movies, just need good speed.

Gord... When it has 512/128 is that peak/off peak ? (even if you choose the flat 512 plan)

sorry for all the questions. I've got no ideas but i must have a fast connection.

I reckon ADSL is the go. Cable they've stopped rolling out to areas, and doesn't offer anything that ADSL does.

There are cheaper plans and speeds than that if you want them. Netspace has the entry level 256kbps plan with 1gig for $50/month. You might be suprised how quickly you do once you get used to it though. Recently i've been downloading the animatrix clips - they have been 150meg each.

Sounds like i'm working for netspace now (maybe i should :D) - but peak is 7am to 12am monday to friday.. weekends and other times is offpeak.

There are plenty of other providers that people also use ...even i-PumpAss or something (hehe). Like Leon.T was saying www.whirlpool.com.au has lots of information.

p.s. you can write parts of it off if you use it for business use too.

I've been using Internode 512/128k (54k/s download, 13k/s upload) for 1 year now and its fantastic, wouldnt switch to anyone for anything.

No point with cable anymore unless your cable provider has unmetered goodies.

A typical page will fully load before my 512k connection even gets a chance to max out the connection (unless its got lots of images). Most pages only get up to around 30k/s by the time they are completely loaded so having a ~8mbit cable connection is kinda wasting things alittle (for general use).

Originally I was on the 4.5gb plan, a month later that was upgraded to the 8gb plan and about 4mths ago they released the new FlatRate plans (miles better then any "unlimited" plan).

1 thing no 1 has mentioned are the contention ratios.

General Dialup = 10:1 (10 user accounts per 1 user account of bandwidth).

Comindico Resellers = 30:1

Datafast = 30:1

Internode FlatRate = 8:1

So obviously the lower the contention ratio the higher chance you have of getting full speed 24/7.

Another thing you may want to look at are the additional services offered. Things like unmetered games servers, unmetered download mirrors, etc etc.

Still though my professional decision would be the 512/128k FlatRate plan for $99.95/mth.

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
