Hello all,

This is my 3rd r33, and this one I want decent.

Im willing to put down cash into my project and went to hyperdrive in malaga, spoke to ken to get a quote on modifying my car.

This is the quote I recieved, I was just after opinions on the quote. Like is it a reasonable price? are the power figures correct? etc..

Lance

Basic quote is as follows

Turbo GT35 Garrett $2100

Water pump and belt and idler pulleys $750

Supply, fit and tune Autronics and boost controller $4000

Supply and fit pon cams $1600

Supply and fit injectors $1400

Supply manifold and ceramic coat $1650

GReddy TD06 turbine kit which is manifold, gate,

turbo and piping, lines etc approx$5100

Think that should get you to about 420-450rwhp at around 16-18psi

Well What do you all think!

what internals do you have?

that will see a non-built motor go bye-bye very soon!

20 grand seems a bit expensive for 450rwhp though...

got any other quotes?

try xspeed, top racing, ovaboost, etc.. might find it cheaper elsewhere, especially for cash :P

you can save heaps if... you do most of the things your self and order your self from japan

but stuff like autronics, installing and fabrication of turbo and mani and maybe injecters let them do it but every other thing you can do your self

i would order everything my self apart from the autronics

have you thought about a clutch and a diff ?

pfft.. just buy a 2nd hand motor for $1750 that has been recently rebuilt like i did andrew :D

but yeah.. what supporting mods do you have?

brakes, suspension, diff, gearbox, clutch, tyres.. etc etc..

all good and well going fast, but how long will it last, and can you stop? :P

The car is stocker than a rock!

No internals

No HD clutch

Tyres are random

Will need bigger brakes

Just completely random that they overlooked internals dont u think?

Wholesale price on a GT35R is $1826.

IMO if you are paying them $$$$$ in labour to do it all, then you should negotiate cost-price parts.

For those prices, you will be getting top notch gear. You can do it a lot cheaper (for example you can get a China manifold for $350 compared to $1650).

Hey Lance,

That quote is pretty much spot on. you must remember that when i workshop quotes you pricers on parts that they are paying gst and other taxs etc, so it will always be more pricey compare to if you bought the parts direct from japan.

You could possible drop down the price buy looking around for the more common parts from companies in australia or online shops in japan (for example www.nengun.com or www.greenline.jp)

as an example one of the forums traders can get garrett turbos are very good pricers (i belived its slide performace)

Also the comments about you blowing ur engine is neither here nor there. Basicly with that sort of power you are pushing the upper limites of the stock rb25 engine and also putting alot of stress on the gbox and drivetrain (lsd, tail shafts etc). I would say if you arnt looking to rebuild possible aim for 350 to 400rwhp and throw in an aftermarket headgasket (to lower the compression) for extra safety.

Just to give you an example my car is an r33 rb25det and im running close to 350rwhp @ 16psi, my engine has 100,000km+ and i have been running this power for abit of time now and i've yet to have a problem, althou a had a slighty issue with my tune it has now be all sorted :P

Also if i could give you some advice, shop around on some of those parts and if you need help sourcing anything i am more than willing to help you out, and point you in the right direction where to get the parts cheaper.

Also when picking a tuner, you will find that can be the hardest part of it all, please remember that every tuner has there bad and good stories And don't always belived what you hear or read. I found that when picking a tuner for my car, it basicly came down to picking a tuner and seeing how it went, if i wasnt happy with the tune, i would go else where.

Good luck and have fun.

Cheers Michael

edit: also just remember that some more pricers for you; a forum trader sell nismo 740cc injectors for around $900 to $1000 brand new (but i do belived you looking at between 300 to 400 to get them installed)

edit2x: Also if i've learnt anything from my build up of my r33 is do it right the 1st time althou china parts are cheap, i would presonal stay away from them. and get quality brands or quality made custom work

350hp is different to 450hp mikey.

and you dont know the condition of his motor. :P

but yes, id be a bit concerned if they overlooked the engine internals..

its all good and well them telling you what will make the power, but whats the point in having it all, but an engine that wont last?

hell, save your money! spend some of the 20 grand on a T107 Thumper.. you'll make a shitload of horsepower, assuming you dont throw a rod or 6 by full boost.

350hp is different to 450hp mikey.

yes i know that but seeing as people in the eastern state have no problems running 300rwkw on stock rb25det, i dont see why we cant do it.

Also steve (who now owns a red sil80) had an r33 with if i remember right 300rwkw on a stock rb25det just had a head gasket to lower the compression.

thou like i said i would aim for 350 to 400hp

think next time you need to read my whole post mitchy hehehe :P

yeah i did, but im going off what he was quoted, i dont see them telling tim to drop the comp. with a gasket.

:P

most likly because the labour cost is very high for such a job (thou i think it would be pretty easy in his case see how they have to take of the turbo and plenum anyways)

at 335rwkw you are pushing well past the limits of a stock rb25

you could stick to under and up to 300rwkw and get an internally gated turbo and save heaps of shit like manifolds , wastegates , custom dumps etc

and forget an autronic , find a 2nd hand powerfc theres even a few new ones floating around for under half the price of the autronic

something like this:

HKS - Turbo Kit - GT-RS AU $ 2,481.56

Nismo - Fuel Pump - Skyline Nissan Skyline - ECR33 AU $ 326.89

Nismo - High Performance Injectors - 740cc AU $ 890.47

Tomei - Pon Camshafts ECR33 Series 2 (RB25DET) - Duration: IN, EX 256 Lift: IN,EX 8.5mm AU $ 684.15

Cooling-Pro Type 1 Intercooler Kit - Skyline R33 GTS-T Price: $449

X-Force Stainless Exhaust System - Skyline R33 GTS-T Price: $950

2nd hand power fc $1200

plus some more bits a pieces but you get the general idea . this sort of setup would pull about 300rwkw or very close too

regardless of the cost, they should atleast advise him..

f**k if i was paying $20k in parts, id want to be told what colour underwear i should wear to maintain the car..

I agree but i also understand workshops get alot of emails from people who end up not buying anything at all or even using the workshop for something.

I guess if you go in ur more likly to get a better picutre of what is need etc.. getting a quote over an email is always just a ruff est.

well thats what i think anyways but i can see your point too :P

Aaron, who runs sliding performance, can supply high flowed rb turbos (ie totally rebuilt to specs, highflowed, teh works) that can support 260rwkw with max 19psi boost, and vg30 turbos that can support 270rwkw max 19psi

maybe you want to look at that?

mate i can talk from experience on this shit iv done a big end in a gtr r34, then the same in my supra twin turbo and then threw a rod in my current car gtr r32, i would shop online ebay and even talk cash locally top racing did me some killer deals for cash, i got my tomei 2.8 kit there crank rods pistons rings i bought every thing first then shopped around for a builder ,i would be doing bottom end rods pistons ect first build a strong base first then bomb something worth doing it to .i ended up putting tomei 2.8l kit new block new balancer, big sump, cams ,valve giudes, springs, berry rings, lifters, all bearings ,1000cc injectors fuel rail ,oil cooler, two new turbos ,oil catch can ,new dumps, tomei oil pump n1, water pump ect ect ect and all the rest that go's with a full engine build for a little bit less than that quote so shop around workshops hate it but its your money need any advice im sure there's plenty of people on here that have done the same .

My Two Cents (word to the wise)

Alls I can say is to quote Mr Ken "You get what you pay for". I mean shit, one thing I can say positive about Ken "Hyperdrive" is that he stands behind his work. Sure he charges a shit load, but he too has to keep himself in supply of cavier :) like any highly specialised perth wonder performance shop.

I have got some work done by Hyperdrive in the past and if theres only one thing I can say thats positive is that Ken does stand behind his work. He talks alot of hot air and comes accross as a rude son of a bitch but thats just the way he is.

If he makes a stuff up he will fix it, as for him blowing a motor because of mods and not fixing it, im not sure of that.

As for tuning a D-Jettro Power FC thats another story that neither Hyperdrive nor Xspeed could make good on, "just my exp".

And Ken is always happy for you too bring ya own parts, but if the install f*^ks up its on your head not his, to quote directly.

Rob

My 2 cents is that you dont need teh Greddy plenum. My mates RB30DETT is pushing 490rwhp through a standard RB25 intake manifold (that's about the max it will handle though, we're pretty sure it's a restriction now). That's $1500 saved there :)

I can stand by Ken and the guys too. Your list is very similar to mine (minus the plenum and power fc instead of autronic). 410.7rwhp on 15psi with Glen doing a fantastic tune keeping timing on a conservative level, and a rich mix to keep it running cool. Knock rarely into double figures!!

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
