Hey all,

Ive got a r33 gts-t with fairly simple mods including: 3" exhaust system, FMIC, dual stage boost controller and aftermarket boost gauge. A couple of weeks ago i found that while i was flooring my car the stock turbo was boosting normally hovering around the 10psi mark but then once i started to accelerate again the turbo wasnt spooling up. I tried flooring it again but the boost gauge wasnt going past 2psi???? After about 5min of normal driving the turbo started to spool up again as per usual but then after flooring it, same story.

Any ideas? im thinking maybe the wastegate is sticking open but is there anything i can do to check the problem? I had a look around the engine bay and it all looks ok no leaks or anything.

An even stranger thing happen last week, my mate is a detailer at ford so i took the car in there to give it a nice professional wash. I sprayed the engine bay with a cleaner they had and hosed it off with a high pressure hose. On the way home i gunned it to get through a yellow light and noticed my turbo was still spooling so i gave it a few test runs and it worked everytime but now the problem is coming back...

thanks for any help.

I "had" the same prob with my R33, it was my BOV. Took it off about 20 mins ago

pulled it apart and gave it a good clean, the cylinder inside was scored and had a few deep scratches.

I got my dremel with a little sanding disc and smoothed out the inside of the cylinder and

the outside of the piston... just took it for a spin, prop fixed..

Hope this helps.. Kev

Money on the dual stage boost controller, I'm assuming turbosmart. Set it on high and i bet it works properly. If it does I'll explain the fix.

I second that! i got a dual stage turboxs and on low bosot exact same problem , on my second stage high boost wich is 10psi its fine. I dont exactly know why it doest it but i believe its the dual stage boost controller, very simmilar to turbo smart i think

All hoses are ok. Yeah i have the turbo smart dual stage boost controller. Ill give it a go on high setting 2moz cos its raining like mad right now. The only problem is that my high setting is on like 12psi but i cant use it cos i have stock ecu and fuel cut kicks in. I guess ill set it to the same amount as low and try it.

I let you know how i went and if your right BHDave you can let me know the fix.

Cheers

Hey guys

Well it looks like you were dead on the money. I tried it on high boost and it worked everytime. So how do i go about fixing it?

Cheers

Change your boost controller to one that is a single stage....

turbosmart does it again!

Ok, the problem is in the tee of the boost controller. It has a small ball bearing and spring in there which acts as a one way valve when you have it set on the low boost setting. So what happens is it works once and brings boost on, and then it prevents the pressure escaping from the actuator and holds the wastegate flap open, so no boost. It does leak slowly back to normal which is why it works again after 5 minutes or so.

So, the fix. Remove the spring and ball from the tee. One of the nipples on the tee is threaded and can be unscrewed and the ball and spring removed.

And problem solved!

Just one thing though. If i take out the ball and spring wont that mean that ill be running on high boost all the time regardless whether the switch is on or not?

No. It's in the tee, not in the bleed section. You may need to adjust the controller to get boost back where you want it but the dual stage still works fine.

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
