so while im driving along this fine afternoon im pulled over by the red and blues. standard engine check, licence, address confirmation ect ect, then he goes back to his car. im sittn there thinkn all is good until he comes back to my car and issues me a defect saying i need to get my cars intercooler checked for Air Bag safety protocals. im like wtf do u mean protocals theres nothing wrong with it. the policemen explains that unless he sees a engineers cert saying the cooler is legal my car is defectable.

is this true? outta no where slaps a defect on me and asks for a engineeers cert to clear the defect for a cooler about some Air Bag protocals.

bumped into the guy around hallam so if u got a FMIC stay away lol.

oh and one other thing id like to add, if a cop wants to defect u he will! they will always find something, i keep my car really low so when i get pulled over i always get defected for height and sometimes they dont bother to check anything else as they just tick "Major Defect" and off I go - Easy fix

Perhaps he may have used the same law in regards to bullbars on uts/4wds?

I think when bullbars are installed on car it is somehow mounted to activate airbags in case of an accident?

Although i could be wrong...

Hope you get it cleared without any probs

i know im not F*ckn getting a Engineerers cert, but what are my options? and whats this OPI?????

the guy explains that if i get into a crash the intercooler may interfere with air bag protocals, i guess he means my air bags may not be functional.

any ideas wat i can dO? cuz the po po is telln me to get a cert, and vic roads is following what he says like howard follows bush...

man this is 2 defects in like 2 weeks

dont they ask u to get a RWC?

U cant reason with the cops, your only option is to get an Engi cert or take them to court and u will most likely loose

Welcome to SE suburbs

dont they ask u to get a RWC?

yep, major defects tends to = full RWC

i got pulled over last year and the cop checked my exhaust, he gave me a defect for my exhaust not being "EPA compliant", he says my exhaust tip was too big and i said its not really loud and i have the CAT on so whats the problem? he didnt say shit and still gave me the defect - All i did for that was went and got an exhaust dB test to clear it (and passed) and i had to get a full RWC too, like i said they will pin any BS on ya to give u a defect

man screw dis im getting a corolla lol

ill keep ya guys posted, gonna have to think of something cuz im not wasting 500 bux on some bs

Bad luck man, sorry to hear, i guess we all need to be extra careful these days :D

Was your front bar/reo chopped to fit the cooler?

If so - you need and engineers. No question there

no it was a direct fit.....no cutting wat so ever......but the cop says i need a engineers cert.

honestly i think its bs

The only reason i can think of is that in a front end accident it might affect the way the sensors go off for the air bag. It is a meatal object (Albeit aluminum) and most engineers will say that this will have an effect on the way that the front end behaves in a crash.

Hmm RE: Engineers cert.. I got told i need an engineers cert to pass the hole that had been cut under the battery tray for fmic pipes (TMU), but when i took it into a mechanic they said it was ok and he gave me rwc (was selling the car).. i took that to vicroads and it was all cleared fine. So perhaps the system doesn't actually note whether you need engineers cert?

just called upVic roads to have a chat, turns out the policemen didnt tick the box that said the RWC/engineers cert was required.

they lady said if it dosnt say i need one, then i dont.

gonna bring my car in tm to try my luck

Ye the intercooler and airbags thing isnt new. I was speaking to a guy who does our RWCs ages ago and he told me that he isnt supposed to RWC a car with a FMIC that also has factory airbags.

But as previosuly stated theyll always find something!

    • That was the first session so not a lot to take from the day. It was low 20s ambient and the coolant had got to 110 (and obviously had some pressure!) so that still needs to be addressed. I haven't downloaded the data yet but will. I had refilled the auto trans with Redline DT6 because it claimed the best viscosity I could find at 100o. It wasn't really long enough to get a good feel for that; while the trans got to 100o in the session it still wasn't shifting crisply as I hoped. I think I'll try a few more sessions before judging. No steering motor overheat but I'd hope not in only 1 session! But finally the suspension; it was night and day over the standard stuff and the car was a couple of seconds quicker on the same crappy tyres, which is a huge difference. I'll stick with that and get some sway bars and a mechanical diff sorted too and see how that all goes together
    • I guess it’s partially a compromise of how my car is used, wanting to be able to switch from drift to grip with track side on-car adjustment. Also partially with the way the knuckles are set there is more static camber but less dynamic camber gain.
    • OK, so update from the track day on Friday It was a classic "an unfortunate series of events'. There were a few cars around and when i checked my mirror coming out of the fish hook I notice some smoke from the rear of mine. Looked again and it was getting much worse, I figured I'd blown a turbo or something to got off it and pulled off the racing line. However.... since it is a left hairpin into a right kink, I was on the inside of the next corner. There was a car passing me on the left and a big drop off over the ripple strip on the right......and someone had knocked the witch's hat that was on the apex about 1m onto the track. So, between those 3, I decided to mow down the cone and not damage my car/the other car. Right choice, but surprising result.  The car decided the cone was a small pedestrian so it blew the rear bonnet hinges up to protect their head in the upcoming person to car impact....I didn't see that coming and like an airbag deployment it happened super fast. Straight into the pits from there, everything was driving fine but it became clear it was a coolant leak not smoke, it was billowing up onto the windscreen. Onto the trailer and home. I'll do a separate thread about the repair (once I work out what it is ), but the immediate problem was the bonnet wouldn't open because the front was pinched onto the front bar and would not release. Ultimately we unbolted the hinge from the bonnet, pulled it back a little and it released from the front OK. "There's your problem", the top radiator hose had popped off at the radiator.
    • Yeah that looks like great caster, but I'd suggest trying less front camber some time and seeing if it helps with braking without reducing mid corner speed too much
    • I ended up setting the rear 5mm higher than normal to give some clearance.  My plan is to run the least camber I can in the rear which I think with the extra width is going to need to be -1.75 to -2.00° just to get clearance.  Guards have been rolled and pulled as much as they can/I would be wanting to.  front has the Acostal knuckle with the KPI change and the drop etc. So should be okay with the existing settings I have run with AR1s etc Front: Toe total -2mm(1mm out each side) Caster +7.5° Camber -3.8° Ackerman +15°
