Hey Guys,

Can anyone point me towards someone who does shipping insurance?

My V35 is at the docks in Japan, but still hasn't been booked on a ship yet.

I've read that Kiwi includes insurance, but in case it goes with a different carrier, is it worth getting Insurance?

I've had one quote which is based on the 2% of FOB price, and works out to be around $500, as the FOB price is aorund $23k.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers

Bobby

thanks Sambo,

any companies you know of?

I'm almost certain the car will come in with Kiwi, but want to be preparred in case it doesn't.

Cheers

Bobby

Kiwi should have an affiliated Insurer. No point trying to bargain, they'll just give you off to another shipping company :(

Is yours coming over in a container or Roll on / Roll off ?

RORO.

That's part of the reason I really want to have insurance, even though I know it's gonna be a drama if I want to claim anything.

I have a file with 160 pics of the car, which i will send the insurance company, but again trying to prove any claim will be pretty hard from what i hear.

Yeh Razor brings up a good point.

I can't even remember who i used now

But i had heard what goes on at the docks, so i chose to import a very standard looking 33 without all the gadgets :stupid:

Let us know what happens man, i'd be interested to know.

There's a nice little thread about some issues with KIWI. I prefer to use Mitsui OSK.

Yeah I read that. to be honest I'll probably take the ship that gets my car here the quickest.

I found a broker today who wants 1% of FOB which is around $200, so I'll more than likely take that up.

Sambo, my car is completely stock with no bits on it, so I'm hoping all goes well.

Man I hate waiting.

i was told be my japanese dealer that shipping insurance will only cover salvage fees if the ship sinks, however if you car falls of the ship or is damaged in any way shape or form on the ship, its not covered and you have to just suck it up and no one will insure you for that kind of damage/theft

you may want to check what your actually going to be paying for with the insurance before you get it (and feel free to correct me if im wrong). It seems like kiwi actually cover veichle damage, but from what i've read getting them to pay for it seems to be pain

best of luck with it all

KIWI includes insurace, but getting claims is like pulling teeth. We underwrite through Chubb and it's usually a minimum charge of $150, most should be about the same unless the car's worth a shitload. We had a TV/Satnav DVD player swiped out of a GTO late last year, and they coughed for five grand. Pls be aware that if the ship does sink (and it does happen) the line will usually declare a "general average", and all consignees of cargo will be hit up for a bill for the total loss.

And make sure you have a full set of pre-shipment photos, so if the wharfies prang it you can claim, otherwise the line and the insurers will say it was shipped like that.

Thanks Mate,

Already have 160 pics of the car at the doc, and as for sinking, the people I have spoken to say that the insurance they offer covers you for salvage costs.

Stock cars at stock height without guages attract much less attention. Wharfies have a job to do in a short amount of time, so whil its in their hands, it won't be treated as if your driving it. Thus not having little guages and electronic boxes hanging off the interior is a good thing as to the wharfies, they see it as a nice little weely wage booster after putting them on Ebay :nyaanyaa:

Just be patient as possible NISMO :domokun:

But ur in a good position with a stock car.

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch. I want to ask if this noise is from the throw out bearing or could it be the clutch assembly or disk att.xFliq87Gzw6kImKBVqDebXkj0fBqymk0JaYeP3_3SlM.mp4
    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
