Hey everyone,

Have been reading through the forums for a while but just signed up not too long ago and have finally taken the plunge and purchased an R33 today in Sydney through a dealer. I am over the moon and can't wait to see what fun I will have with it.

Its a silver (manual) gts-t Series 2 with white slimline NSW registration and gold 18's so if you see me driving around or parked make sure you say g'day.

I've got a few questions im eager to ask about what and who you recommend for parts and labour and trying to pass the dreaded roadworthy. I'm keen to get on a cruise in the coming weeks and really get into it if anyone has anything lined up. Right now I think I might take on a few more shifts to cover the obscene insurance bill and unexpected costs. Can certainly say it's a step above the old commodore and a totally new experience.

Look forward to meeting you all.

Cheers everyone,

Shell, I went through Justcar insurance for a somewhat reasonable figure which almost halved NRMA's quote of 4700 a year. Suppose thats one of the downsides of being 18, although the clean driving record certainly helped. Would love to come to the cruise on Sunday but I have to work on the weekends to pay off the bills and hidden costs that are piling up on me, not to forget that it needs a service straight away for the warranty to not get voided :). I noticed a thread on the top about where to service it so i will give it a read and go from there.

That was a pretty classy joke Veilside_R33 I actually laughed a bit. Will post a few pictures in the members rides when I figure it all out.

I didnt think the NRMA insured imports??? maybe it's changed now they're more common.. i dont think they used to?

don't say that!! you'll just encourage him!!

welcome Towlie, the hidden costs are fun hey?

you got quoted 2350 for insurance at 18?!

i got quoted 3700 from justcar for my s13... boo urns

try shannons? they were cheaper than most, with good service too, also Vigil were cheap.

Without a Roadworthy....

Why didnt the dealer give you 1

I called around and Canberra Connect said an ACT roadworthy certificate was required in any case. RTA confirmed this along with some other queries I had. The only problem I think I may have is with the wheels they put on the car. They passed roadworthy and added more registration with the standard alloy's but we agreed the car would be sold with RAYS forged 18's which happen to be 255's so a guard roll may be required or a change to different wheels but I will have to look into that. I'm not sure but I suspect the pod will have to make way for an air box as well depending on where you go?!?

SKYLVIA - I actually ended up paying around the 2800 mark for full comprehensive but that may also be because the car is fitted with a top of the line alarm and immobiliser and I've had insurance on my name with the VN. That being said the excess is a little high for both theft and accident but that is something that comes with age and the insurance rating 4 they were happy to give me. I did have a hard time convincing NRMA about the car in person and that's only because the operator's boyfriend drove a skyline (and managed to write it off) but decided it wasn't worth it in any case as they'd make it even more difficult in the case of a claim.

I read through some threads and gave John at Trojan a call about a service yesterday and found him to be rather helpful. He told me they were booked out this week but if I called him on Monday he might find me a spot or to swing on by.

Well now I'm stuck at work while you guys are probably out on that cruise so I'm gonna make myself look busy and earn some money to cover the car. Cheers for the welcomes. Will post pics shortly.

    • Forgot to include this but this is the mid section of my steering rack that looks like it has a thread/can be turned with that notch mentioned in the post:
    • Hey everyone, Wanted to pick some brains about this issue I'm having with rebuilding my 33 rack (PN is 49001-19U05). All of the tutorials/videos I've seen online are either R34 or S Chassis racks which seem to be pretty straightforward to disassemble but this process doesnt carry over to my rack. Few of the key differences that I've noted The pinion shaft on the other racks bolt on with 3 torx bolts: Whereas my rack bolts on with 2 allen head bolts: These changes are pretty inconsequential but the main difference is how you pull the actual rack out of the housing. The other skyline/s chassis racks can be taken out by tapping the rack out of the body with a socket and it just slides right out. I'm unable to do that with my rack because there's a hard stop at the end that doesn't let the seal/shaft be tapped out. Can also see a difference in the other end of the rack where mine has a notch that looks like you're able to use a big wrench to unthread 2 halves of the rack whereas the other racks are just kinda set in with a punch. My rack: Other racks: TLDR; Wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt this specific model of steering rack for the R33 and if there were any steps to getting it done easier or if I should just give this to a professional to get done. Sorry if this post is a bit messy, first one I've done.
    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
    • Can I suggest you try EBC directly again and link them to as many competitor catalogues as you can to show their listing is incorrect, eg https://dba.com.au/product/front-4000-series-hd-brake-rotor-dba42304/ If you have access to an R33 GTST VIN and your VIN, you could also use a Nissan Parts lookup like Amayama to show them the part number is different between 33 GTST and 34 GTT which may get their attention
    • So i got reply from EBC and they just this site where you can clearly see those 296mm fronts on R34 GTT. I send them photos and "quotes" that 296mm are not for 34 GTT and they are too small. But it will be very hard to return them cuz nobody here knows 100% and they just copy those EBC catalogue :-D https://ebcbrakesdirect.com/automotive/nissan/skyline-r34
