Hey all, for some queer reason, my 32 is missing a rear parcel shelf :S

So I have decided to make my own!

Can i just get a few pointers as to which materials to use (ply wood, or something thicker?)..

Also just some general tips or a link to a DIY

Thanks

:D

get a mate with a 32 parcel shelf, copy that and make it out of whatever you want... if your gunna have speakers in it, thicker MDF will sound better then plywood... get carpet from Jaycar unless you want some other shit, and get... f**k... mental blank... theres a special type of glue you should use to gllue the carpet on... you can get it at hardware stores...

OR just buy one off a scrapped 32...

i made one a few years ago for my 33 to fit 6x9s in the back just get some mdf and black greay carpet borrow a mates shelf as stated and start drawing nd cutting not too hard, luckily mdf or ply is cheap so if you stuff it up dont panic

Here are two links which may help, its amazing what you find when you search!

The first link is very helpful with some good pics. I'd suggest finding a mate with a 32 so you can trace his parcel shelf, will make things easier - otherwise start one from scratch with some cardboard - when you have the cardboard fitting well, trace onto MDF.

In hindsight... stuff those stupid vent thingies! It wasn't worth the time to hack little notches and finely balance a jigsaw to make the holes for them.

Bear in mind, thicker wood means you'll have to get a router-bit to angle the side that sits flush with the rear windscreen, or your whole piece will be too long.

The window is like... <

and your wood is |

Together: <|

So you want: <<

Just follow those pics, use a real one as a template if you can. I don't think it'll be easy without it.

From what ive read, the vents allow air to escape when you close the door. Without the vents it will make your door harder to shut due to the air pressure inside. Not sure how true it is, but i still cut the vents in.

I have my old parcel shelf which i used as a template onto the new wood i cut. (refer to the link above for my parcel shelf thingo)

If you want to borrow my stripped down parcel shelf template, shoot us a PM.

Cheers

Patrick

Yep, I did know this, but I should clarify...

Stuff putting the stock vents back in, vent the shelf some other way. I'd be tempted to put two 2" bass ports in the shelf instead, and covering it with speaker mesh. 2" hole-saw bit would have been much quicker.

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
