Ok I've just about been reading everything thread on "whirring" "thrust" or "input shaft" that came up when I searched for an hour, and I'm still very confused as there are lot of people saying opposite things. The symptoms of my car is this:

Car in neutral with clutch OUT: whirring noise occurs

Car in neutral with clutch DEPRESSED: noise dissappears and no other noise present

Car in gear: no noticable noise except at strictly 2000-2500rpm where a rattling noise occurs. Although not sure if this is the Diff or Gearbox.

I would like to know if this is a thrust bearing or input shaft bearing problem? As far as I know, to replace the input shaft bearing its a matter of opening the gearbox yes? And to replace the thurst bearing, it doesn't require the gearbox to be opened but can be done when changing the clutch?

I will be replacing my clutch in the near future as I believe it is still the stock clutch and I am upgrading the turbo, and as these parts are ~$20-40 (correct?) I would like to fix this problem.

Sounds like it could be the input shaft bearing, this is shown by the clutch being out and the noise occuring.. (e.g. engine is engaged and rotating the input shaft) - does it change noise with revving the engine? I doubt it's the throwout bearing as this would usually do it when you push the clutch in..

Input shaft bearing is opening the gearbox, a new thrust bearing comes with most clutch kits.. Doubt its your diff.. Either way gearbox has to be pulled down..

Mines been doing that for three years.Makes it feel like a racing car.vroom vroom.....just kidding,it should be ok as mine has been to Wakefield a couple of times and not any noisier.

if it's a loud whirring then the bearing is on the way out. my car was basically a minter when i bought it and still made a little noise in neutral, clutch out. it's not noticeable unless I listen for it though, and I have a stock exhaust.

when you get the clutch done, tell them about the noise symptom and make sure they grease/replace any bearings that need it. opening the gearbox is a bigger deal so I'd try and avoid it unless you've done the clutch and the noise is still just as bad.

Most likely the input shaft bearing then. :D

How much does this part cost? And is it an easy job to replace? Say I'm paying a Workshop to fit my clutch in and since the box is out, how much might it cost to get them to open it up and replace the bearing?

What causes failure to these parts by the way? I don't want to have to replace the part only to have it end up failing again.

I had my input shaft bearing done 12 months ago when i got my new clutch done and it was noisey again within 6 months, its just one of those things if you replace it the noise will come back eventually anyways.

Its the input shaft bearing for sure. You can have it changed without stripping the box if your mechanic has sutiable pullers the get the bearing out by pulling in the circlip groove.

If you are going to get the input shaft bearing replaced you might as well look at getting the 1st/2nd gear synchro's done at the same time.. Mine's been bad for a year, but haven't got it changed, if you get an oil change and find bearings in or pieces of the bearing cage in the oil than that's not the best!!..

I would suggest taking it somewhere, and get a quote..

has anyone ever DIY'ed the input shaft bearing?

Would love to have a crack but I think it's a fair bit out of hands.

I have the same symptons in neutral, except in first and second my car continues to whine.

you have to remove the selector fork for 3/4 to get to it. but im going to get all the bearings done in mine. cheaper than a new box lol.

unless anyone knows where to get a route6 gearset????

Dave ive got a cross mission that will be up for sale very shortly with new bearings and syncros. Its basicly just a hollinger, I keep breaking 3rd so im finially biting the bullet and fitting a Trust dog box.

Ive been getting around without 3rd for a while now you get used to it after a while.

Same old story mechanic that couldnt be bothered!

My rb20 gearbox started making some horrible noises with the clutch out, in neutral or in gear and driving.. got so bad I thought it was going to let go with any harsh clutch/throttle movements, the new rb20 box makes a tiny bit of noise if you listen hard but nothing like the old one! But as everyone has said, clutch in - thrust bearing, clutch out - gearbox.

hrmm sounds like my issue. except for part of a bearing cage i pulled off the magnet :D

there's a pretty good chance that its not the input shaft bearing then, they are a sealed bearing. what you have is most likely the bearing cage of one of the bearings in the sandwhich plate which holds the cluster of gears these 2 bearings are not sealed and use the gearbox oil to lubricate them. i've had this exact problem with 2 of my gearboxes.

mine makes this noise aswel! when i bought my car the noise wasnt there as much but then for i wile i was dumping it in2 second gear and then the noise just got louder..i changed the gearbox oil and the noise quietened down a little but is still there..

Just researching this problem, as my car seems to have a similar issue. Same as in first post. Have had the car for 12 months, noise has not gotten any worse, have taken the car to skidpan days and took it to texikhana, noise is still not worse. Is this something I can leave until I get the clutch replaced? Or should I have a look into it? As car has been fine to drive, apart from 5th crunching if I change too quickly into it from 4th.

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree.     • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
